I agree. UK fans would be laughing at him if he was not the coach here.
I think Pope has gotten better recently, but it’s hard to argue that when he sets his sights on one person he won’t give up no matter the slim chances of getting them or not. I also think if he were not a former player, or coached let’s say Duke that the same people who always defend everything he does would be asking for them to sign him for life.

I’m so tired of not competing at the top.
If we can't crack the elite 8 by year three, I pray we get a new coach. I've thought he was the wrong hire from the start (I don't think UK is a place to learn on the job), but I've still been trying to give him an objective chance.

This was so silly anyways, but even more silly that we couldnt get it done.

Jamal Crawford has no coaching experience of importance. Despite being an amazing player for 20 years, there's nothing that says he translates to the coaching ranks. On top of that, his kid is in the 2029 class. Yes, hes the top recruit, but theres several years to go, and who knows if Pope can last that long. This was just a desperation move if you ask me.

Ultimately daddy Crawford doesn’t want to take an assistant job until his son decides where he’s going and if he’s a good dad he wants to let him have his own spotlight.

Honestly the throw-the-bank-at-Momi and this Crawford hire really feels like Pope doing everything he can to hang on. This move especially. Trying to potentially lock in a recruit 3 years from now by hiring his dad? I wouldn't have liked this for Cal or any other coach. And im not sure either move is worth it (assuming the $6mil price tag for Momi).

I understand we have to give Pope resources, I completely get that. But at the same time you have to be able to fly on your own accord. If you have to overspend for all our guys and try and hire family members 3 years out (and throw in the JQ desperation move), thats not a good sign of things to come.

Honest question. While we can all agree Pope held out too long on Stokes and let other players sign elsewhere chasing him. Do you hold the same vitriol for the boosters who forced Pope to stay on Stokes since he was a KY kid and would only provide the NIL money for Stokes and no one else? Or is it easier just to blame Pope since it's unlikely, outside of a group of a few small people, know who those donors were? Not everything is "Pope whiffed", though he does his fair share of it too.
It’s 100% on Pope. He has a blank check.

As for Crawford, it’s not a whiff. He was never coming here.

Mark may not be here in ‘29 so why would these connections matter … unless he is here. Lol

Odd.

More odd that a coach takes a stab at a long shot because he thinks it may produce and then posters slam him for not getting it done.

Insufferable. Never ending. Redundant.

One thing this thread (and a lot of others on RR) proves is that a small, but very loud subset of UK fans are absolutely miserable and seem to only want to be miserable. Must be a sh*tty way to live.
So true. I truly hope they are all bots programmed by a Duke fan for giggles, because it’s otherwise depressing to think people are actually like this.

I sat through nearly 10 years of some posters griping about Cal constantly, especially during seasons that should be literally considered a success by definition. I think the negative sentiment around here lately is perfectly warranted. This will fix itself with the majority of the posters if Pope can deliver this year. You get a 3 or 4-seed, win a lot of our big games, and grab an Elite 8, my tune will change. So will a lot of people's.

What a bunch of word salad. Like usual, no substance, no insight, no thoughts of Crawford on your own. No theory. No thoughts on whether Crawford is worth the hire or not.

Ive given Pope credit in recent weeks for several things, also defended him. You choose what you want see, and thats fine.

Like I said months ago, you can put me on ignore anytime.

There was a word salad filled with inconsistency and contradict. It was your crybaby post.

You don’t know whether Crawford is worth the hire. You really don’t. And, that is why your post was stupid.

Bully for you. How gracious. Or, so what? You want a message board prize?

Dude, you put a lot of weight on an offer for an assistant job. Seriously pathological.

I don't find it to be a worthwhile hire. Mo Williams, that made more sense to me because of his actual coaching history of late. Crawford has no experience, and for Pope.. let's be honest, he could use some help. So was this just to hope that we can land JJ Crawford in 2029? I'm not saying I know the answer to that, but it sure seems that way. And if that's kind of the driving force, in hopes of landing his son, a top recruit who is 15 years old? I don't see that as a hire we should be going for.

And yes, in turn, it looks even a little worse that we couldn't land him (despite myself not wanting him). It's not mutually exclusive like you think it is. It's like.. you ask the band geek to prom, and she still turns you down. What does that say about you? Not the best analogy, but my point is that if Pope can't even land a first time assistant coach after what appears to be several months of courting him, and likely a pretty good pay day, TO a program like Kentucky.. thats not great. What does that say about Pope's ability to recruit talent, coaching player or otherwise?

My thought is that Crawford has the number one player as a son, which is great to have when he comes on. He is plugged into grass roots basketball and younger players still remember him as a fun NBA player. No telling how he would actually turn out as an assistant but he seems knowledgeable enough on broadcasts. It’s worth a gamble just to get some credibility on the grass roots scene imho. Too bad we may not be able to snag him at all.

Yeah, the beach picture was weird. He was flexing after paying a guy 20% more than his market value, the finishing piece to a team that isn't projected top 3 in their own conference.
You act like not being projected top 3 in the conference is utterly pathetic but we would have to be top eight nationally to be there.

Yeah, im not inherently opposed to that thinking. Crawford might be the next big HC for all we know. But I still think we could use more experience for Pope-led teams which have often looked disengaged and not good defensively.

I agree. I’d love at least one coach who is proven to be a great game planner and scout. We need recruiting help for sure, but game planning is a massive weakness for me as well. A John Robic.

Ky. Asst Coach or NBA Analyst? I take NBA Job
Lexington or Seattle? I take Seattle.
West Coast or MidWest? I take West Coast
Son‘s high school exposure in Washington State vs Ky? I take Washington State

Read the article before you are too harsh on him. He had A LOT of praise for UK and discussed how seriously he took the offer but chose his current commitments and contracts over the UK position. Didn't rule out a future with UK.
This! He still has two years remaining on his contract, per Pope. Also, he and Pope have been friends a long time. A future endeavor for Crawford at UK isn’t out of the question. Seems some “fans” on here are quite giddy over this information. Wild. 🙄

Most people understand the attraction of Crawford as an assistant. It’s no different than posters here for years saying Rondo would be great on the bench. The guy is a long time pro who understands the game and has a high profile with recruits and the media. You can’t get excited about Tyler Ullis being on the bench and pretend not to understand how Crawford could be a great get. And, Pope knows him and knows his knowledge of the game. It’s not an unknown. People beyond Pope have said he will be a coach if he wants to be. It is completely understandable to the unbiased basketball fan. The fact his son is a stud is really only icing.

I’m sure he has plenty of money.
True, but how many people will willingly go from a couple million a year to a couple hundred grand a year. Especially when you still have minor children used to that type of lifestyle at that income level. But more so it is about burning that bridge. If he bolts on his TV deal, and coaching isn't right for him, it could be hard to get back in. And some guys just honor their word. I signed a contract, I'm finishing out my contract (though if that were the case, he probably would have said no pretty early).

TBH, I didn't really want Rondo, either. If for nothing else than I don't think Kentucky is the place that you give ex-players their first real crack at coaching. Now, a lesser role with the team, sure. But if we're trying to win games, I want the assistants to be somewhat proven.

Ulis is a little bit different, because he came on as a Graduate assistant I believe. I'm not sure if him being there took up any assistant spot and it couldn't have cost much.

The money for assistants is not the issue. Pat Riley was an announcer after his career. Paul Westhead became HC for the Lakers and immediately grabbed him as an assistant. After 2 years, he was leading Showtime. The idea that long time successful players are not primed for coaching is wrong. An assistant at UK for might be the perfect match for Crawford. With 20 years of playmaking in the NBA, he knows the game and has been taught by a lot of different HCs. The guys who stick that long often really understand and make themselves valuable to teams even late in their careers. The issue is motivation. They don’t need to work as hard as assistant coaches need to work because they have earned generational bank, if they were smart. So, you need to know that the dude is driven by passion for the game and winning and not cash. The money is not the factor for him or for UK. If he is a good get, he is a good get.
