Am guessing only a modest salary increase for the nation's top paid assistant.

The Baylor Bears are expected to hire LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as their next head coach, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

Aranda, 43, emerged as the leading candidate for Baylor's vacancy on Thursday morning. Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente and Louisiana coach Billy Napier, who each spoke with Baylor about the job, announced Thursday that they are remaining with their schools.

Joey McGuire, who is serving as Baylor's interim head coach, also drew consideration for the permanent position. McGuire is the associate head coach and defensive ends coach.

Aranda will replace Matt Rhule, who last week left to become head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Rhule spent three seasons at Baylor; in 2019, he guided the Bears to 11 wins, a spot in the Big 12 championship game and a Sugar Bowl appearance.

Aranda has spent the past four years at LSU and helped the Tigers win the national championship on Monday against Clemson. He is the highest-paid assistant in college football, earning $2.5 million annually.

He is the second high-profile LSU assistant to leave the Tigers. Passing game coordinator Joe Brady joined Rhule as offensive coordinator for the Panthers.

Baylor will mark Aranda's first head-coaching job. He also served as defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, Utah State, Hawaii, Southern Utah, Delta State and Cal Lutheran, where he played football with current Texas coach Tom Herman.

Aranda has coached in the state of Texas twice before, first as a graduate assistant for Mike Leach at Texas Tech and then as linebackers coach at Houston for two seasons.

That would be an interesting hire for the Big 12. Will be curious to see how strong of a defense they can build in that conference.

As a DC, that isn't the worst idea I've ever heard actually. I don't think thy want that at all, but would that be such a horrible hire?
with their talent, he would probably be able to be successful there. I think Aranda was a pretty good recruiter though and we all know how much Bo loves to recruit. He looks miserable at YSU so I think he would jump at the chance to go back to LSU. I would be happy for him I guess if that did happen.

Funny story about that movie...many moons ago when there were still video rental stores I went into a Hollywood Rental location and asked if I could buy that movie (turns out the studio never released it for that apparently so the answer was no, or something like that, details are fuzzy)...anyway, the girl I was talking to about this knew exactly what movie I was looking for and they had tried to buy this for another customer, and they got a porno in with the same name of Hollywood Nights instead.

I wish we could say that.
One of the nationally syndicated sports radio guys today kept saying that "LSUs DC, Matt Canada was going to Baylor." I can't remember the guy's name right now but he was on an ESPN station. He's kind of a holier than thou know it all so I can hardly wait to hear about all of the crap he got from listeners.
