As far as I'm concerned Mitch is the NIL guy. Yes I know the program can't be directly involved but I haven't seen anything about indirect involvement. We need to offer incentives to companies with club seats, tickets and discounts in promotions. They in turn can pay it forward if you will. The lack of creativity I am seeing would be surprising, if it wasn't so obvious he and the athletic department are living in 1995
How do you know there’s no such “indirect” involvement already?

As noted, the schools themselves cannot be involved with the NIL stuff under the rules. So, even if Mitch were secretly taking action to encourage NIL deals, he sure as hell couldn’t tell us about it.

You’re presuming to know things you can’t possibly know.

The only reason things did not change back then is because the courts repeatedly sided with the university presidents. University presidents are adamantly opposed to this today just as they were then. The difference is simply that the courts have stopped shielding them. Has nothing to do with political climate.

I’m reminded of something mentioned in an article in Sports Illustrated about college athletics.
Coaches believe, but are afraid to say, that the scholarship athlete is an employee of the university. With a contract. Paid to produce, to represent the school as an entertainer and emissary, paid in the currency of the "free ride," an all-expenses education—tuition, books, board, laundry, walking around money, etc.

That was written in 1969. People have been pressing on this for decades, but the courts and attitudes of university presidents blocked any meaningful movement.

If you think this is simply the result of today’s political climate, then you’re either too young to have been aware of this or you simply weren’t paying attention at the time.

There might have been some people pushing it behind the scenes in some way, but it wasn’t a popular position and it never came to a national light. That happened due to the current political climate.

The scholarship and instruction was always seen as a positive to most people including the players and families. It wasn’t until the political shift and lawyers convinced families they’re victims that this became widespread.

Good points. Couldn't Makers Mark do bottles of players or would that not be allowed if not over 21?

Other than that it is slim pickens. YUM Brands is all over Louisville, Papa John's is toast.

All the big businesses HQ'd here are in the spirits industry.

And of course, Kentucky’s NIL has a ban on alcohol…

Toyota needs to step up I guess

I don’t think Toyota has any vested interest here. Vehicles built in their Kentucky plant sell just as well regardless, and all their big decisions are made elsewhere. They have no real need to earn our goodwill.

It’s more the Kentucky headquartered ones that need to step up. Yeah, I’m looking at you Lexmark, KFC, coal, bourbon and horse people.

I don't know about that. He couldn't get to the Peach Jam final game with Wiseman and co.
Wiseman only played 3 games, Jeffries and LQ were hurt. It was a team of young players led by a really good freshman Prescious Achiuwa playing out of position. No matter the circumstances coaches have to win but facts should be part of the story.

The only line of defense we have for continuously getting schooled by Duke and Memphis is that we're "morally above reproach."

Maybe we should start hanging some ethics banner
Memphis and a few other schools are learning to change with how kids are thinking. They want NBA people teaching them how to be ready for the NBA. Penny, Larry Brown, and Sheed Wallace are all NBA blue bloods and Cody Toppert is an NBA development guy. We play in and NBA arena. We have NBA players living and playing here. Playing pickup games with them. Motivational speaking time with them. With the Gleague and whatever they call the other start up plus overseas opportunities getting the top one and done players is a new game.

The other shoe has been the NIL. It takes the under the table money and lays it open for everyone to see. And please don’t throw out any my coach don’t cheat crap. That’s only fan board drivel.

Penny has to win or all this hype is just short term entertainment. I think he is a better coach than he gets credit. He certainly has proven his command of building defense success. I think he has surrounded himself with the people who can make up any other shortcomings. We know he can recruit.
now he has to prove.

Penny can’t coach. He hired Larry brown to coach. He is the face. Larry will be the brains

Do you see it next to Rivals? Didn't think so. If you could read you'd see I explained this multiple times.

We offered him very early before he committed to MSU. I don’t think we did anything after that so yes his commitment to Memphis isn’t Penny owning Cal. He knew he wouldn’t come here so why waste the time.

Cal needs to stop with the complacency and resting on his laurels from 2012 and do something about 2022! I'm so sick of him! We need to right this ship! Love my Cats, not our "Coach"!
This is on you dude. Cough up that money baby. Cal can make the contact but you gotta feed’em baby. SHOW ME DA MONEY!!!

NIL sucks.

This right here^. Larry Brown is the elephant in the room. With him Memphis will definitely be a contender. To think otherwise is foolish.
