Chol now in the portal apparently. MSU's current roster is 2 returning players (Hubbard, Grace), 2 returning redshirts (Bartlett, Paul), 3 Freshmen (Reed, Burnett, Callingwood), 1 Transfer (RJ Johnson) and now 7 spots to fill.

Also, can anyone explain how these guys are in the transfer portal?

- Achor Achor (who has already played 6 college seasons - 2 years at JuCo, 2 years at Samford, 7 games at Kansas State, one year at MSU)
- Jayden Epps (1 year at Illinois, 2 at Georgetown, 1 at MSU)
- Brandon Walker (1 year at UT-Arlington, 2 years at Montana St, 1 year at MSU)

Is this a "you can't tell me what to do NCAA" situation? Or are they just anticipating the 4 years of eligibility thing being over?

The entire feel of this offseason is that we’re going to try the exact same thing that worked so swimmingly well this past season all over again

1. Keep Hubbard
2. Throw in some brand new, random guys around him
3. Hope for the best

I used to be able to explain it away with 'well there is that extra year due to the Covid waiver', but I got nothing at this point.

- For Achor, it could be that he will argue the juco years dont count and 7 games at KState is under the redshirt threshold, so thats a redshirt year.
If that is what he is arguing, he would have 1 season of eligibility left(2 at Samford and 1 at MSU).

- For Brandon Walker...no idea. The dude played 4 full seasons starting in 2022, which was after the Covid waiver season.

- For Jayden Epps...same as Brandon Walker. No idea. He has played in 117 games already and started in 2022. Itll be interesting to see the justification.

I guess we're looking at:

PG - Grace (can he play PG?)
SG - Hubb (needs to move here and take some pressure off)
SF - Johnson (can he move here?)
PF - no idea
C - Bartlett

I know we’re not in position to just pick and choose transfers, but I would love to have Hubbard one year with a tall point guard to pair him up with.

Until Jans changes up his style, it's going to be hard to get the players we need.
This. I think Jans has played out. I didn't get all the love for him anyway. Never has had a winning record in the SEC and overall he is 29-43 in conference. He is obviously an a number 1 ahole who kids don't really enjoy playing for.

Mizzou is currently 3rd and South Carolina is currently 7th in the conference for MBB transfer recruits.
What style do the coaches at those two schools have that is so much better/more appealing? I would bet that well over half this board couldnt even name one of the two head coaches at those schools. Heck, that same bet could be applied to a a random sampling of 100 fans across SEC programs.

I am not claiming Jans doesnt need to change up his 'style'(not totally sure if that refers to court play style, recruiting style, or overall coaching style).
I am just not sure how Paris' style at South Carolina is more appealing...they have had 1 winning season in 4 years of him being there.

Yeah, I think we're looking at something more like this:

PG - Mid major out of the portal
SG - Hubbard
SF - Mid major out of the portal
PF - Mid major out of the portal
C - Mid major out of the portal

I've heard from some guys who have seen him play and say Johnson is the real deal. So I'm penciling him in as a starter. Other than that, I think yours is accurate.

4. Head coach lies awake at night thinking about what could have been had he secured that Arkansas job.

Jans has really disappointed me. For what looked like a great hire after the first 3 seasons, this train is heading down fast.
To the point where I'm genuinely wondering whether he's even trying anymore. We have to be towards the top of the SEC in terms of the # of spots that we need to fill, and yet we're at the very bottom of the league with just one transfer committed.

He seems very defeated with no real plan aside from retaining Hubbard

Yep. He acts like he doesn't even want to be here.

Jans straight up doesn’t want to be here, and hasn’t since after season two when the Arkansas job popped up. He doesn’t get talent to Starkville, and he doesn’t get the guys to bye into his defensive philosophy. What is even left at this point? Why is he still the head coach? It’s criminal he can’t get talent around Hubbard

Sure it’s cool to make the NCAAT the first 3 years, but all the results were the exact same. He got us to a decent level, but built absolutely nothing from it.

And just like that....Jans added another one. Good news: He shot 40% from three. Bad news: He was 38% from the line. Get excited - he's only about 10 spots behind Macura on the power forward rankings per 247.

6'8 230#. Good.

31-77 = 40.3% from 3pt
12-21 = 38.7% from FT

How?!?! I honestly just dont understand how.
That is baffling.

Averaged 5ppg. With the Dentist yelling at him every game he will probably average 3 in this wonderful offense.

Even Rosebowl saying this is a downgrade.

When you’ve lost Rosey….

But I’m still of the belief that JDF won’t amount to much so the downgrade can’t be that dramatic

At the end of the day, Selmon and the basketball donors need to start the process of finding a young go getter coach. Jans is a dead man walking, and add to that his no offense philosophy, his horrible portal game, and the worst nickname in sports The Dentist is just the tip. We haven’t got to the shaft yet!

I've never understood the early love for Jans. There were things to like, but he got way too big a pass for some obvious deficiencies because he squeaked us into the tourney 3 years in a row and promptly lost without even proving to be a Top 32 team.

And that was, and will be, his zenith at Mississippi State.

We are in dire need of at least 3 quality starters and he just signed a backup off a bad team that we (also a bad team) beat on the road last year. That is truly pathetic.

I clicked on the link with zero expectations, and yet I somehow still walked away disappointed

Welcome to the Jans era of portal recruiting
