Basketball stats to be concerned about looking towards Nova

The team has a negative assist to turnover ratio and by a good bit. 15.8 assists to 17.3 turnovers - and that's against less than incredible teams so far.

Free throw % is an embarrassing 63.2% so let's hope the players arent fouled often.

3pt % is currently at 28.1% which is even worse than Ray's first year in 11-12. It's also the worst 3pt % this century.

Only 5 games in, so plenty of time to improve on all this. But the competition will only improve overall, so that will make it more difficult to improve.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted on this. It’s simply stating concrete facts. And all three of those terrible stats have been a hallmark of Howland teams since he’s been here. Bad assist to turnover ratio, terrible free throw shooting percentage, and bad to hot/cold 3 point shooting (with a splash of terrible 3 pt shot decision-making thrown in).

We’ve had quite a lot of Gene’s pagers migrate here lately, and they aren’t fond of negative posting. They’re used to the golden sunshine only.

3pt shooting % will be down with every team this year as the 3pt line has been moved back again this year. It essentially an NBA 3pt line now

I am not taking anything from stats 5 games in. Good or bad. It’s kind of a free for all until you get to conference

That seems like areas Tyson Carter needs to carry us. He’s cooled off since this first couple games.

It feels like we have been a piss poor FT shooting team for years. Even going back to Stansbury. No, I haven't bothered to look the numbers up so maybe I am wrong.

Turnovers and free throw shooting are the most concerning to me. We showed yesterday that when we square up and take good shoots, the threes can fall.

Our offense this year isn’t as reliant on the three as it is getting out in transition and getting the ball to the rim- which is why we need to take care of the ball and make our free throws. Reggie Perry is under 50% at the line right now, and that has to be better because he is going to get to the line a lot this season.

Today is a good test and kind of a free shot against Villanova. I’m excited, even though we are without Nick. Just look like we belong, and do not ever give up an uncontested three point shot. We may need to change our strategy defensively and not help as much on drives to the basket.

Either the SEC and school website hasn't been updated or your stats haven't. I'm seeing 16.4 to 18.8 assists to turnovers, still terrible. But 66.4% on free throws, not good, but much closer to acceptable. And 34.5% on 3-point shots, which is 4th in the SEC right now.

Only one game but we shot 55% from three yesterday and 81% from the line so percentages went up to 34.5% and 66.4% respectively. Positive step but time will tell. Turnovers are a concern, but I firmly believe Nick will help that.

Today’s game vs Nova will be our first real challenge to win. Reggie will need to br really strong today. Tyson will do well today but may have to score more within the 3pt arc. Nova will try to take away the 3. Our new faces will be fun to watch vs a strong opponent. It is such a small sample size right now relative to the entire season so it is just too early to start projecting how “bad” we will be in different areas. Let it play out.

I think all of that gets fixed with Nick coming back. He will run the point and cut down turnovers, shooters will be more in their "spot" so to speak. You have to think Nick is running the point at the 1 spot in practice so I am thinking that is what is making the offense look a little out of sync....

Good info, thanks for adding this.
The stats I referenced were from ESPN, so they must not have included yesterday's game even though it wrapped up 7 hours earlier. Odd because the stats showed 5 games played.

The assist to turnover ratio is actually worse now than when I posted. Rough.
But FT shooting is higher(though still bad) and 3pt shooting is closer to respectable.

I’m going into today with no expectations. If we win, that’s fantastic. Just playing Villanova will be beneficial to us, they might be better than anyone we see in the SEC.

What's infuriating is the majority of the turnovers are just sloppy/lazy ball-handling. They are correctable and necessary if we want to beat a team like Nova. I do believe adding Nick will help in this area. I love Tyson, but damn he has such a tough time handling the ball up the floor.

Hopefully the FT% will improve as the year goes along.

Smarter basketball IQ team. More coachable team. Higher effort team with better conditioning. Missing our former 5* starting point guard and basically filling his role with a true freshman playing his first college ball. I'm going to hold off on being concerned about much of anything at this point. The thing about this type of team is that it's coachable, which tends to show major improvements along the way.
