Basketball public scrimmage

I only caught the final couple of minutes on huskers.com. After the Mississippi State game, I started to think we may have something to get excited about this year. The team goes 10 deep, far deeper than any team in recent memory. The scrimmage, though, left me with concerns. No passing, soft defense, and a lot of dribbling. I know it is just a scrimmage, so please, if anyone saw more than I did, share your thoughts on what you saw!

Beating MSU in the exhibition and ISU in the secret scrimmage have me more optimistic than I probably should be.

A public scrimmage for the fans. I don’t think you should put much stock in this one. Probably not much in the other scrimmages either, but certainly more than the fan scrimmage.

Both Mississippi St and Iowa St are predicted to finish near the bottom of their conferences. I'm not sure these scrimmages have taught us much in terms of where this team will finish in the Big Ten. But I feel like we finally have a complete team - we have a good point guard, some shooters, and a couple of legit big men.

Don't worry, the Nebrasketball team will be great this year... just ask the players:

Palmer:
"I think this team could be real good. I think we could make a run in the (NCAA) tournament. We have to focus on getting there first, but I think this could be one of the best teams to ever come through Nebraska."

Okeke:
"This is probably the most talented team I've ever played with, I'm not going to lie to you. You've got guys with different stuff and different backgrounds, but it's just like, I see us doing so much more.

"Like, we have no ceiling. I know a lot of teams say that, but if you look at our roster and you see what we do day-in and day-out, this is probably one of the most talented teams I've been a part of."

They think pretty highly of themselves. Guess they plan on finishing better than last year's 12-19 record...

Hopefully they are right. They definitely act confident! GBR!

Watson, Palmer, Copeland, Jordy, Allen, McV, Okeke, Roby, Gill, Taylor. 10 guys who may start, and from what I have seen, Palmer may be the biggest addition. With my projected starting line up of Watson, Palmer (6'6"), Roby (6'8"), Copeland (6'9"), and Jordy (6'11"), we will finally be bigger than most.

I dare say I am more excited about basketball and volleyball this school year than football.

I didn't see the scrimmage, but no passing and LOTS of dribbling is Miles' offense. That's all we're going to see. I predict there will be a grand total of three entry passes to the low post from the wing all season. And maybe one sequence per game where the ball is swung from one side of the court to the other without someone stopping to bounce the ball to himself.

As for defense, again you are spot on. Soft, half court defense to "stop" dribble penetration is the name of the game. No ball pressure, passing lane denial or full court pressure. Good type of defensive system to use if you run a big lineup, but since Miles absolutely loves three or four guard small lineups, his defensive strategy makes no sense.

Iowa state has a kenpom rating in the mid 30s

In english, they're probably a better NIT team or borderline ncaa team that plays in a brutally deep conference this year.

Msu returns four starters from a team that was .500 in a power five conference

https://www.rockmnation.com/2017/10...ll-preview-ben-howland-quindarry-weatherspoon

They may be predicted bottom end but they are going to get close to twenty wins. A little hot streak and they're probably only a slight stretch as a possible ncaa team.

Neither team was kansas, kentucky, or even Creighton. But at least a little optimism seems warranted espectially given our shall we say... Dreadful history.

I watched the first 10 minutes or so...and like what others have said it’s only a scrimmage but I liked the pace we were playing at. We were really pushing the ball up court. I was probably most impressed with Duby. Imo he looks better than Jordy right now. Figured we would probably get no offensive production out of him but he showed some nice moves and was effective in the pick n roll game. This team should be much more enjoyable to watch than some others in the past. Not sure how many games they will win but we have some interesting pieces.

Mississippi State is a very good team... Just to give you an idea of the talent on that team

And Iowa State is never a bad team! Both are solid wins, do not down play the W's

Oh, I'm definitely glad that we won those scrimmages. But Iowa State lost their entire starting lineup from last year and was voted 9th (out of 10 teams) in the preseason Big 12 poll, while MSU was voted 12th in the SEC preseason poll. We are going to have to beat a lot better teams to do any damage in the Big 10.

Early in the scrimmage they seemed to really work to get mismatches down low. Duby on Taylor, Roby on Green, etc. Later on it became an NBA all star game style of play. But I was also impressed with the hustle. A number of guys hitting the floor for loose balls even though it was a scrimmage. Oh, and I understand why NuNu isn't seeing playing time. Stiff as a board on defense, playing with his feet close together and an inability to turn his hips. Obviously athletic so its just a matter of instilling good habits after breaking some terrible ones.

The real question is whether Scott Frost was a shirt or a skin.
Just saying Our Savior’s name adds one win to the B.B. team’s record. Scott Frost Scott Frost Scott Frost. Bingo. Three more wins, just like that.

Didn't realize the SEC had 12 teams in the top 60... No way the SEC is that good!

What is the point? You are criticizing the Huskers for WINNING? Certainly better than losing. This cliche seems to be perfectly applicable here: haters gonna hate.

What’s your point? Someone wrote these teams were good, someone else wrote they were picked near the bottom of their leagues, I provided the preseason rankings. Why don’t you pick a fight with one of the posters who actually criticized them for winning not me for posting some preseason predictions.

Miss St lost by 27 in their scrimmage against T Tech. I don’t put much stock into these pre season scrimmage scores but you are probably right in that they are a bottom barrel SEC team. But, I’m cautiously optimistic for the Husker team this year. Not saying we are an NCAA type team but it wouldn’t shock me if we found ourselves in the discussion come March.
