Baseball question for the more knowledgeable

I was sitting on the first base side and saw something that the OM first base coach did that I didn’t understand. OM had runners on first and second, the FB coach would stand in the coaches box as close to home plate as he could with his back to home plate. He would kinda squat with both hands on his knees and stare out toward center field as the pitcher pitched. He never even glanced at the pitcher or batter. Between pitches he would walk up to the runner and say something and return to the same position. Standing half way between home and first with your back to the batter seems kinda dangerous. Just wondered if anyone knew what he was doing.

I can't imagine why a first base coach would look in that direction when the ball is pitched.

Typically, the first base coach is looking at the pitcher, to warn the runner on first to get back if the pitcher makes a pick-off move. Then, if the pitcher throws a pitch to the batter, the first base coach watches the pitch to see whether the batter hits it.

What you're describing is dangerous for the first base coach. He could get nailed in the back with a line-drive foul ball.

Was he looking directly towards CF?

typically, a runner on 2b will rely on the first base coach to tell him the position of the SS so he knows how big of a lead to get. The first base coach will typically move his body with the SS. So if the SS starts walking towards 2b, then the first base coach will walk towards RF with him to let the runner know he’s creeping behind him.

From my angle it looked like he was staring a hole in TA in right field more than center. I mean he was hunkered down looking at or for something intently. He never glanced at the pitcher or hitter. He didn’t do it with only one on base. He definitely wasn’t watching second base.

With a runner on 1st and 2nd, the first baseman isn’t holding the runner on 1st. My guess is the coach was watching for the 1st baseman sneaking behind the runner for a pick off at 1st. No need to watch the pitcher until 1st baseman is there to take a throw. He’s watching for a timed pick off of the trail runner.
