BASEBALL and NIL for MSU

We have a chance to REALLY dominate baseball like Alabama does football if we want to. With the NIL wild Wild West now, we can "funnel" a lot of money toward MSU players legitimately now to offset the advantage a Vandy has with scholarships. We can almost create pseudo-scholarships now and our track record, crowds, fans, facilities, opportunities may attract kids that we've missed out on in the past.

A few players like a Trevor Lawrence with national recognition will get a deal out of it. Otherwise it will be a mostly "see your local farm bureau agent" and "click it or ticket, Mississippi" type commercials.

However, if a coach can sit in a kid's living room and offer a scholarship plus endorsement package worth X dollars on day 1, that will change the landscape for sure.

In reality 95% will make nothing at all, 4% will have 3-4k in some crap local sponsorship (and owe their publicist 10%) and 1% will actually make some money. Jacob Hester was on ESPNU this morning talking about an LSU gymnast who has over 1 million tik Tok followers and how she could benefit more than a football or basketball player. So, good point.

It’s just going to bring the bag men to light. Kids will be promised an endorsement deal for their signature and that will erase (or go on top of) what the boosters are paying them. It will change very little about where kids go to school. The same 10 schools or so will continue to recruit better than everyone else. The only chance we have is for the ncaa to drastically cut scholarships in football but that’s not going to happen because they don’t want to get called racist (even though Vandy has 8 black baseball players on their team which proves there is a market for minorities in the sport if the ncaa would just allow schools to fund it). As it stands Vandy is just cherry picking the best low income baseball players in high school with zero competition outside the MLB.

I think most of it will be just converting under the table payments during recruiting into over the table NIL payments. Not sure they're going to view that as much of a benefit. I am guessing the NCAA will at least nominally try to prohibit NIL deals as part of the recruiting process, which will of course be unenforceable but may at least tamp down some bidding wars.

This is a good example of why I don't think it works or makes a difference. They are advertising Boost Mobile which has/had Sprint and T-Mobile as their network providers. Why would anybody change to Boost which is ****** phone service because these 2 blondes are dribbling basketballs? If that's the way anyone lives their life and makes decisions, that's a pretty shallow well your drinking from.

I'm uncertain what effect it will have on recruiting, but how much do you think Bednar could make right now for a TV spot in Mississippi? If he has any personality and plays his cards right, he could gross 6 figures over the next 6 months.

And speaking of income tax, I wonder if that gives a recruiting edge to schools in FL and TX?

The athletes will get creative and find ways to monetize their NIL. A lot of them will become influencers.

And the rest of us get to play NCAA Football and Basketball again! Time to get a new console!

But the downside is the detrimental effect this could have on athletic budgets. The total expenditures for advertising are not going to suddenly increase. The businesses will just pay the athletes instead of sponsoring school stuff. Even the recruiting bag men might reduce their donations to the school in order to give legit money to the athletes.
