Wind turbines kill a lot of birds and bats. Ban em

Kfc kills birds. Ban em

Manufactured outrage is easy
Wind turbines and KFC serve a purpose. What purpose is letting balloons fly serving?

People seriously are mad because people are OK stopping a tradition of letting balloons fly?

How is this a thing?

Ive got no dog in the fight. Dont care either way.

However...

Balloons serve a purpose of entertaining. People like them. They make people happy. Is there a more noble purpose than that? One of my fondest memories as a kid and a parent was the first time I saw it live and my kids saw it live. They were awestruck.

I can't believe grown men are clutching their little red balloons, screaming about having them taken away like a little brat at the zoo.

They're balloons.

The billboard is overkill, but I think it is a fair point to discuss. You can be cited for littering for pretty pedestrian acts with material that “biodegrades” faster than these balloons. It’s fun to try to hit a road sign with a bottle from a moving car, too.

I’m not sure I even care about this. I guess I just thought it was a reasonable point to bring up.

Similar to why people get mad to change the tunnel walk song, change the uniforms ect. It is change/tradition, most people do not like change however small. I have no problem with the balloons, there are bigger issues in this world to concern ourselves over. However, if they decide to get rid of them, not a big deal either. The only tradition I really care about at this point is the sellout streak. All others can be changed for all I care.

As was shown when that idiot tried to sue over this a few years ago and got laughed out of federal court..

The balloons Nebraska releases are specifically designed to expand and shatter into tiny pieces (too small to be a choking hazard to wildlife) once they reach an altitude of 25,000 feet.

They even did a season long tracking study at one point. Less than 2% of balloons released ALL YEAR failed to reach 25,000 feet and the number of those that traveled more than 30 miles was able to be counted on one hand.

The local zoo and wildlife agencies have zero issue with it.

The FAA has zero issue with it.

The EPA has zero issue with it.

So get over it.

Dumbass tradition because it celebrates something everyone does...everyone scores in a game...and it is super lame if it is a defensive struggle and we score a field goal 90 minutes into a game and half the balloons have already been released. Plus all of the environmental negatives. How about Runzas are free on Sunday if we score 40 in a game...and a vals large is $5.00 if we score 50 in a game. Or the boosters actually invest in blackshirts for the crowd to wear on defense...so the entire stadium goes black when we are on d. Balloons define Nebraska as stupid.

If the balloons are biodegradable keep them it does create a part time job for some people, rather see them sell balloons that be on welfare or doing drugs, there is a economic side to this probably not much but hey every little bit helps

Wow. Exaggerate much? I don't see anyone on here screaming like brats at the zoo (although I admit that is annoying, lol). Just see a minor sidebar discussion about one of our traditions.

That is a bit excessive. Every school has their "thing" they do. https://www.thrillist.com/travel/na...erica-s-top-25-college-sports-fan-traditions# If there is factual data proving the balloons released by Nebraska are harming and killing tons of wild life animals then a discussion can be had. As of now I don't believe there is any direct data showing so. Im sure we "stupid" Nebraskans can find other things to obsess over.

I saw that a FL based company has put up a billboard here in at attempt to have the tradition stopped. I guess Clemson was the only other school to release balloons and they will stop doing in this year. Totally ridiculous, I love the things some people get obsessed about.
Anyways I don't see it ending here any time soon. If it ever does, what could replace it?..... Give everyone a bag of confetti, instead of balloons everyone throws confetti in the air. The cleaning crew would love that. :)

Suggestions:
* For night games we should do the flaming balloon thingy...you know...those Asian rising candles at night thing. A few neighborhoods might burn down, but it would distract people from the danger of day game balloons.
* Just fire shotguns in the air as a replacement. You wouldn't have to change the approach for night games, but you'd still get that great flame visibly coming off the barrel. It would be really cool.
* If you're at the game with a small child, just hum them high in the air after the first score.
* Instead of kissing...like A&M does after every score (what if you are at the game with a dude!?...not that there's anything wrong with that!)...everyone just humps! We'd "see and raise" A&M, that's for sure.

Any other ideas on how we can replace the balloon tradition?

GBR!

Hate to break it to ya, but if someone has to sell balloons to make ends meet then they're probably already on welfare and taking drugs.

Do you encourage every husker fan to drop a plastic bag on their way to the game? It may not kill birds but it is a ****** thing to do and even young kids see the stupidity in releasing 50k non-biodegradable objects for no reason. It is the definition of stupid...polluting your city to celebrate something that even the worst teams can do regularly. That is not debatable. If people want to be stupid because it is historical, then fine, but it is still stupid. And when a southern program decides to stop a tradition because it is stupid and harmful it is wise to follow suit.

Was it not established that they are in fact biodegradable? Should a bigger issue not be the thousands of plastic soda and water bottles sold at each game then?

Are you mad that it does not in fact harm the environment?

They were specifically designed to break down at an accelerated rate.

Generalized the whole south as being ignorant? ....The whole north is diddling children dude!!! How's that for generalizing, does that sound cool flipped around???

If this is true, all I can say is what a time to be alive if we can engineer balloons in this manner.

You are getting worked up over something very small in the grand scheme of things. Like everything in this world, it is ok to not agree with something. Trying to force your beliefs on everyone else or calling people stupid, is not. You do realize the plastic you use in your everyday life probably does more harm to the environment than a few biodegradable balloons right?

Again, stupid. Our plastics have a location they are taken, either to be recycled as PVC or taken to a landfill...the reason being it is trashy to litter your plastics. And you use the word "few"...giving a balloon to every human at the largest gathering of humans that occurs in a 10 state radius is not a "few". It is going to be nearly a million balloons littered in a home season. I don't care if people want to release balloons, but admit that it is a ****** thing to do, is careless, damaging to the environment, and only done because our team did something even the worst teams regularly do. And now we have to live with the reality that people in the south are now more morally responsible.

Well holy cow, that's about 21,000 balloons for the season, far under the millions supposedly released. :D
where did you get this info? I went to 50 straight home games...a whole lot more than 3000 were released each game. Haven't been to a game since 2011 so maybe they have limited them...still dropping 3000 plastic bags isn't a good thing, especially when it celebrates something as common as scoring. And they still get "released" if we get shutout. Regardless of my hyperbole it is an obviously stupid tradition. Admit it, accept it, and release your balloons.

Well, my two grand nephews (ages 10 and 7) both seemed to enjoy it last year when I bought them balloons for the Wisconsin game. So there are at least two!

I think that’s kind of a big drawl IMO. Kids love them. That was one of my favorite things as a little guy when I’d go to the game. My wife a Mizzou grad, use to make fun of it until she saw it in person.

Just had my first kid, a son, 2 months ago. Hope to buy him his first ballon at the stadium soon just like my dad did for me and I believe his dad did for him. It’s tradition and kind of corny (no pun intended) but it’s still very cool and wholesome

Actually, I've never released one balloon in all the games I've been to. You seem to be one of those holier than thou kind of people, you ever eat at a fast food or nice sit down restaurant? Ever drive or still drive a car? Ever question places such as Hollywood, where they waste a helluva lot more in making their movies than balloons being released.

If they stopped selling balloons at the stadium, it wouldn't hurt me one bit, but you better be one heck of an environmentalist and show you've never done anything harmful to it in your lifetime before you go calling people stupid. I'm sure we all get your point, you just don't have to be so harsh in directing your opinion towards a hostile level.
