Planning a BWCA trip in a few weeks and young boy (12) really wants to get a baitcaster but I have zero clue about them. I've always been a spinning reel guy.

Any recommendations for a beginner reel?

The prices are outrageous and I don't know what I should be looking for.

TIA

I don't have an opinon on a good real as baitcasters aren't my thing, BUT. If you are taking a trip and the boy isn't experienced with a baitcaster, then i would pack an extra spinning reel so that WHEN you or the kid gets tired of fixing backlashes or you run out of fishing line on the spool from cutting them out you can just get the kid to agree that he needs more practice, adn then whip out the spinning reel and enjoy the rest of your vacation. Oh, don't forget to cut up the balls of mono from the backlash and pack it out with you! ;)

90% marketing. If you know what you are doing, then they can be great. However, I've found that the benefit of "accurate casting" isn't significant enough to warrant the pain in the *** these can be then the line gets backed up or nested.

if you're good with a baitcaster you can really drop a cast in to tight spots that's for darn sure. and i know modern reels are less prone to backlash than back int the day, but i sure as heck wouldn't want to OJT with a baitcaster when on a big trip. It sucks to be untangling line when there are all those fish just waiting in the water for you to catch!

Every fishing trip I've been on where someone said "I'm going to try out my new baitcaster" ends up with the baitcaster sitting in the cabin with a giant mess of line.

I think it's one of those things that takes a decent amount of practice and feel to use effectively.

Take some dynamite. You can catch tons of fish ;) Just joking. Good luck on your trip. I've used spinning reels or fly gear in both fresh and salt water environments and even open ocean trolling via boat.

I despise them. Just as soon as you get a little cocky and think you have it dialed in and figured out, you sight a fish and get a big ball of fuggery. Spinning reel 4lyfe.

Probably 10-15 years ago my buddy and I went fishing and he had a brand new baitcaster. He had never used one before, and didn't bring any other rods with him.

Long story short, within about 15 mins he was using one of my spares that I brought with me. We still joke about that day. Took like 2 mins before he was cursing the damn thing out with a giant birds nest hanging out.

Yep, that definitely tracks with my experiences.
