...so again this is the problem with the true Mike Leach Air Raid Offense. In order for Leach to run this offense like he did elsewhere, you HAVE TO HAVE a SMART QB and one that is fearless to make decisions and one with a quick release. What I watched on Sat vs Memphis during the 1st-3rd Quarters was a slow, scared and timid QB holding the ball WAAAAYYYY TOO LONG, a scared QB afraid to throw the ball in the middle of the field, and an indecisive QB who continued to dump 3-5 yard high school passes to his check-down RBs who can only get very few YAC yards (Yards After Contact)...all against a MEMPHIS Defense who gave up 50 points last week to Arkansas State...50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now during the 4th Quarter, we saw the reverse. For one damn quarter, we saw a QB say in his mind "HOLY SH** we are about to lose this, let's go!" - Then and only then, we see a SMART QB, quick decision maker and one not afraid to throw long bombs down the field, but only when we are BEHIND in the game.
This Mike Leach Air-Raid experiment ONLY has 3 options going forward:
1. Will Rogers need to get his finger out of his A** and STOP playing conservation, scared and timid when we are ahead. He is playing not to lose, instead of playing to win by continuing to keep scoring, can't let a home team like Memphis hang around & get momentum with a home crowd going crazy...yes even a team like Memphis. He needs to play like he did in the 4th Quarter and forget about interceptions, being scared or whatever he had previously been taught to do in his background. He is too slow, scared and timid in the early part of games and he has almost cost us points in our two previous games by getting behind. Does anyone know why he is being taught like this? Is it his background being in his Dad's offense and playing conservative until you get behind in a game? He has almost cost us victories in two previous games and now he DID cost us a victory yesterday. He can't play this bad for 3 quarters, it is horrible to watch. He holds the damn ball way too long.
2. Mike Leach needs to replace WILL ROGERS now and play Sawyer Robertson and take our lumps now instead of next year. Look folks, there are only 2 more wins on our schedule: Vandy and TSU. We won't be able to beat any other SEC WEST team this year running the Will Rogers running this version of the Air-Raid. I would rather go 4-8 with Sawyer learning on the job training instead of more Will "Timid" Rogers 5 yard dump passes in the flat for no gain. Also, I'm not sure Will is SMART ENOUGH to run the real Air-Raid Leach Offense. From what I remember during recruiting, Sawyer is a SMART QB who has intangibles to run this offense like the Texas Tech years.
3. *IF* Will Rogers continues to play this bad for 3 quarters in every game for the whole year, with no accountability from this coaching staff and *IF* Mike Leach refuses to give another QB a shot, we will go 4-8 this year and probably 4-8 next year as well. In Year 4, Mike Leach needs to be fired for playing favoritism. Look, I love Will and he is a great kid from a great family, but performance speaks louder than words. He is not getting it done and if he can't, Leach needs to give him the backup QB job going forward. Will just maybe a good SEC backup for MSU and that is fine and nothing wrong with that and he can get his degree and get a real job in the future. Again, you have to have a SMART, FEARLESS, QB to run the true Air Raid.
