It turns out that WVU’s only loss came to the team with the longest winning streak in the Big 12, Iowa State, with 4. Once Montgomery and Purdy both started, the Cyclones became a different team, going from 1-3 start to 4-0 streak.
WVU and Oklahoma, if both can win the next 2 weeks, will meet November 23 and probably again Dec. 1 in the Big 12 title game.
What will WVU’s 42-41 victory over Texas do for the #13 Mountaineers in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff committee rankings?
I see 3 teams that WVU may leapfrog, which might mean #10 in the new committee rankings:
#9 Kentucky took a 34-17 whacking from #7 Georgia. That should help WVU move up.
#8 Washington State was tied at 13 after 3 quarters against 5-4 Cal and only won, 19-13, so that might help WVU move up.
#11 Florida’s 38-18 demolition by 5-4 Missouri should help WVU move up.
OTHERWISE
How far will #3 LSU fall after a 29-0 skunking since it was #1 Alabama, which steamrollers everything in its path?
#4 Notre Dame remains unbeaten but unimpressive against, except for Michigan, an unimpressive schedule. But the Irish always get extra credit for their long history of being a blue blood.
#7 Oklahoma struggled against Texas Tech, 51-46, but I doubt the committee will allow WVU to leap-frog the Sooners.
#10 Ohio State won again, but only 36-31 against 2-7 Nebraska. Can WVU move ahead of the Buckeyes? Nah. Ohio State and Notre Dame get extra leeway because of their histories.
WVU has to win against TCU, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma and let the College Football Playoff committee’s chips fall where they may.
But I haven’t enjoyed and been this excited about a WVU victory in decades.
