B1G Refs

Need to stop playing favorites in the season. My hypothesis for BIG failures in tournament - Their homer calls lead to soft teams. The refs aren't there to bail you out when it's March.

Should help teams like RU, MD who deal with adversity all year

Some truth to this, but it’s a fraction of why a team like Illinois loses to Loyola.

Loyola is WAY better than an 8 seed. They punched the Illini in the mouth from the get today and maintained the upper hand all game.

But yes — B1G officials need to just be impartial officials all season long. Too much coddling of folks like Cockburn, Garza, etc. How much that translates into how NCAA tournament games are played/officiated, it’s probably a small fraction.

I think there is some truth to this. Guys like Garza and Cockburn and others seem to get preferential treatment in many BIG 10 games. The refs might not do it on purpose but I think many of them might be from the midwest and might just favor the original BIG 10 members. We have to work so hard very often to get calls in BIG games.

Cockburn was frustrated all day, didn't get soft calls either further compounding the issue

All I know is that that tall bald ref has, by my count, worked 100% of college games this year.

BIG refs in both ILL and Wisc games and they are reffing differently. Instead of calling a foul every few plays and disrupting the flow of games they are letting them play.

BIG teams are finding out they’re not in Kansas anymore. Metaphorically speaking.

Big Ten refs don't do these players any favors by penalizing aggressive Defense. The B1G teams are getting bullied by teams with an aggressive D and an offense with a pulse.
There are different styles of play and different styles of officiating. After this tournament, the B1G refs may want to revise how they call games. Would bode well for Rutgers style of play if they change things up.

Crazy theory...but...the early results supports this with MD and RU upsetting higher ranked teams. Our big dogs are falling like flies and geting embarrassed in the process. DEFENSE has a place in the tournament and it is being rewarded.

Illinois loss today has more to do with their game plan than with anything else Underwood got flat out out-coached and by comparison his team was poorly prepared. Loyola is a team that is going to force you to play defense the whole 30 seconds every possession. Think Pete Carrill. Once Illinois got done they lost patients and got frustrated.

While I agree that refs shouldn't give some players "star treatment", that certainly isn't unique to the Big Ten. Simms got a lot of star treatment during our game versus Clemson.
