Ohio State gave up 21 and have a new coach
Michigan State handled a weak Tulsa team easily
Michigan gave up 21 to Middle Tennessee
Penn State put up 70 plus but have been hit by a huge recommit bug
Maryland put up 70 plus
Rutgers righted its ship and won handily against a weak opponent
Left out Indiana previously Had what looks like a handful in their game 34 24 final

Have to wonder if this is the year a new team wins the East or even more importantly if the West is better than the East

Would not judge by first games. Penn State is a hard one to judge--thought they would take a step back, but Idaho is not a good yardstick. Still think Michigan will win the East,

Green Bay 10, Chicago 3 - Aaron Rodgers said, Packers have a defense

Defense wins East, if Michigan State can find a serviceable offense? They didn't in 2018. They could in 2019?

Third game with Arizona State will be first real test.

I think Michigan State year also Which will be considered a Down year for B1G East which will give them excuse to not include B1G in the playoff picture

How long will the honeymoon last for Harbaugh, if they don't beat OSU and win the East?

Why’d you leave out the Hoosiers?

I think in the East Ohio State is still the favorite by media guys but I want to see how Michigan’s offense does under Gattis as the competition gets better. If it can perform I like Michigan as well.

I think Ohio State with a new coach is a legitimate question mark. First time head coaches are always question marks.

Michigan was leading 40-14 before MTSU added a garbage TD in the closing minute. Middle Tennessee State has had a productive offense under Stockstill (starting his 14th season in Murfreesboro). They are a middle of the road G5 team, going 8-6 in C-USA last season and losing the C-USA championship game to UAB and haven't had a losing season since 2011.

"Defense wins East" - heard that last year too.
Michigan had the best defense in the country and was even a 4.5pt road favorite at Ohio State.

Worked out great for them.

I can’t even remember a team from the west won the league. I believe Iowa was close a few years ago when Michigan state won

The top of the West would be a bunch of middling East schools.
I think OSU, Michigan, or PSU could all win the conference, outside of those 3 I don’t think other teams have a chance. OSU and PSU can out-talent any of their opponents but I’m sure they’ll skip up like we’ve seen in the past, and UM has an experienced good QB and a strong OL, which is all you need in CFB to be successful

MSUs offense looks putrid again and I can’t believe nobody on that staff has been fired. From the west, Iowa is good but don’t think they have the depth to be more than a top 15-25 ranked team

Instead of Legend and Leaders, or whatever they were originally Called:

Legends:
Ohio State
Michigan
Penn State
Michigan State
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin

Laggards/Wannabes:
Rutgers
Indiana
Maryland
Purdue
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern

Each year, rotate the top team from Laggards to Legends and bottom team from Legends to Laggards.

IMO and now just my opinion. You could just see from the start this was going to be lopsided like the B1G Championship is showing. Purdue at the start should have been swapped out for either Michigan St. or OSU(preference here as a true blue blood). You could still have a protected cross divisional game with Michigan St-Michigan or an OSU-Michigan. Hell we have them to some extent now and this gives Indiana their rival back.

I know the committee had a fear of a repeat from final week to Championship Game but is that really any better than we have now? Plus is this really a reason to put your two best programs in one division? You should want to achieve balance, not worry about just one game.

It is stupidity.
Plus now with Penn State as an elite level (pains me to say that), there are essentially 4 teams that will be extremely difficult for Indiana, Rutgers and Maryland to leap frog and win the championship.

Will submit my Legends and Laggards concept to the new B1G commissioner. By rotating out the weakest leader and rotating in the strongest laggard, it is dynamic and gives laggards some time to build up.

Omaha World-Herald purposely left out Illinois in B1G West race discussion this year.

Rutgers vs. IU .... both teams have new or QBs that were not necessarily picked by media leading the 2019 team(s) right now.

Need at least this week to get a reasonable picture. Maryland - Howard told us nothing. Wisconsin was impressive but how good is UCF this year? New faces everywhere starting their first games.

Ohio St. - Cincinnati should give a reasonable idea of how good the Buckeyes are this year.

Hobbs and ash should switch gears. Instead of praying for “significant improvement” they should be lobbying the conference to get us to the West by 2030. That may part of the 15 year plan

This is Correct. the only thing we learned in week 1 is purdue has problems at ol and safety were they are starting multiple true freshmen. msu still has problems on offense. they only scored 1 td on offense against tulsa. msu still has problems at ol . msu ran the ball 40 times for 108 yards

Wisconsin beat USF, whole different thing than UCF.

In any given year, the elite teams can beat up on each other, opening an opportunity for one of the other teams who is having a special once a decade kind of season. Then the non-elites, including us, can win it all!

I didn’t know that. Dantonio reassigned the offensive staff to different roles this year but didn’t fire anyone. Sounds like rearranging the deck chairs judging by those numbers. Even Harbaugh has finally come around. I guess Dantonio might have to go kicking and screaming to finally modernize.

Hadn't read anything about that...makes sense in that context I guess.

Would be great to see Luke Fickel go to Michigan State and beat the crap out of Michigan and Ohio State every year. Would be even better to see Luke Fickel wind up at Rutgers and see Rutgers beat the crap out of Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State every year.
Cincinnati- the breeding ground of great P5 head coaches (except for Butch Jones).

Yeah, I'm interested to see how well OSU does against Cincinnati. That's a good Cincy team. That's my upset special for the week (fingers crossed).

Yea I think popular opinion is Army against Michigan as an upset special cause of last year’s OU game but I think Cincy has a better chance for an upset too if there is one.

Cincy struggled to beat a bad UCLA team. They are not beating Ohio State who will have at least 2 L's by the end of the year.

I didn’t say it would happen just that if there is a big upset that’s the one I go with. What would be your big upset pick then? And if you think OSU will have two losses who do you think will win the east?

He’s spent his whole career in Ohio. I’d wonder if he wants to be out of the Midwest plus I wanna see what he does as a follow up to last year.

Michigan or Ohio State wins the east this year. Michigan State is highly overrated, how do they jump from last year to a top 20 team with no major changes on offense?

Bronco Mendenall spent his entire career out West, and he is a Mormon. He is at Virginia now.

Yup and that was actually quite surprising.

BTW - Since it was a topic in one of these other threads Mendenhall was also another coach that called the defense for much of his career until recently.
