He did interview for the job. I’m not an Avery fan but know people in the program. They have also talked with the Lunsford’s from Hampton. Supposedly, Paul Johnson is offering to put in a lot of money for Robinson or the Lunsford’s. I was told Joey is their first choice and then the Lunsford’s. I think they will both turn Avery down and the job will be given to coach Farmer that is already on staff. Avery has great facilities but would be a very hard place to turn around right now. I think Avery wants to win but I don’t know if the parents will allow there kids to be coached and pushed the way it would take to turn the program around. I just wanted other peoples thoughts.
Ethan Farmer officially hired as Avery Head Coach today.

I usually don't discuss too much on here. I admit there has been some brash parents around every now and then just like every other place. Like I have said I have had two kids go through the program and I never have seen any parents cause many problems with the coaching staff. I also coached on the staff for a couple of years. I coached at the rec level and only had a problem with one set of parents. The problem I see is that the recent coaches don't reach down to the lower levels and have an influence in the entire program. In some instance you have parents coaching that do not know how to coach or how to correctly teach techniques. I would really like to hear specifics on what parents have did here at Avery that makes them so bad. You can private message me if you like.

I think its a great hire! Although, I can agree with Mhsneer. As long as the parents dont peer pressure the coach into making decisions and let him do his own system. He should make strides, but with time.

I hope he does well and the parents let him coach but sadly parental pressure is going to keep getting worse everywhere in this new age parental involvement mess going on.

I think it totally could be. If they don’t pressure him to play certain kids, if they let him get on their kids, if they give him time. I’d say he is a great hire. Has to know a lot about football.
100%. Definitely cant play Daddy Ball

The first step he needs to take is emplimenting his offense and defense at the lower levels. If he chooses to run, say the wishbone, then at no older than 5th-6th grade should they be coaching the basic offensive set. Second, he needs to keep his players in Avery County. For the last decade any kid that has had standout potential has transferred to Cloudland, Hampton, Watauga or Mitchell. IMO Bryant's biggest mistake was running the spread. Its an almost impossible scheme to run in a small, rural place like Avery. If he had ran the triple option, or even a wing-t variant a couple years ago, Avery could have finished with a winning record, and top 2-3 in conference. He ran the spread however, didn't adjust, and died on that hill. Look around. Model success. It takes a certain way to coach in these hills. Gentry, Walsh, Laws, Lunsford, Robinson, Pitman. These men modeled success from those before them, while learning and growing themselves along the way. Reach out and seek advice. Heck even reach out to coach Brewer for advice on coaching in Avery County. He was, after all, their last successful coach.
