Timing for the transfer is not the best for either party actually; player or school. Just as it would be poor timing for the school and the coach if a coach and school parted company at this time of the year if one or the other wanted to end their relationship. Stating that the timing is not good does not indicate any bias for one side or the other, it is what it is. To me it is merely stating the obvious, timing of the decision is bad for both parties. That said, if he wants to go you have to let him go.

No, they don't.

Actually the school can prevent him from going many places, see Bo Ryan and Jared Uthoff.

There is a tremendous bias as coaches can leave and go where they want unless the other job is restricted in the original contract which almost never happens.

This has long been a contentious debate. Can't believe you are not aware of this yet come across as all knowing...

Thank you for taking the high road Poetax. But can you please show me where in my post that I said the kid did not have the right to leave whenever he wants? I noted the timing was bad for the school, which it is. I never suggested, as your comment implies, that he should not be allowed to leave. In fact, I stated that if the kid wants to go you have to let him go. I said that as my opinion on the matter so clearly I do not agree with Memphis potentially blocking his desire to transfer.

Now about growing up and ignoring posts that you don't like..... Which of us responded to a post they did not like and:
  1. implied the other poster was being a dick?
  2. told a poster who they disagreed with to grow up and ignore a posts they don't like?
  3. accused a poster of crying because they expressed their opinion on a topic much like you did multiple times in this thread?
  4. referred to another poster as being thin skinned?
Quick answer to the above: You did those things that some would call childish behaviors.

And finally, should all posters who disagree with your comments grow up and ignore your posts while you respond multiple times (in this thread alone) to posts that you do not like?

Nichols family catching heat from this. Sisters and other family members. Jaded fans I guess. Austin is supposedly laying low. He has a local trainer ( that is a p.o.s. ) that is going around acting like he knows what Austin is going to do,and that they have talked about what is best for his future. ( this guy was turned down by Memphis athletic dept for their strength and condition coach this past year) It's quite comical. Anyways, Marquette seems like the destination. Notredame is up in the air because the family wants to make sure the majority of his credits transfer. Ashley his,sister ( local social butterfly and hottie) is being blown up by people that are mad about Austin leaving. She is defending his decision but wants all this to be over with. Supposedly Gary Parrish knows everything and has been given the scoop earlier today but was told to sit on the info till final decision is made. Gary gets to break the story when it's time. Supposedly every big name school has inquired but Austin knows where he is going if the pieces fall.

Not even Parrish said anything about KY. If there was any chance UK was involved seriously, Gary would have stirred the pot for hits. Gary talked to him This morning and supposedly knows everything that is intended if goes right. So Gary Parrish of all people will probably break the story unless something leaks. I don't see UK even mentioned. I wish we were.

Brian, you are correct, my comment that you quoted was not stated clearly.. I meant that only as my opinion that if a player wants to go you have to let him go just because of the ramifications of it with other recruits down the road and because it is the right thing to do. However, I have long been aware that schools can and sometimes do block players from transferring. I disagree with that practice. I should have been more clear that in my opinion the school should let a player go when they want to go.

I interjected the analogy of coaches into the picture because, though under contract schools will often let a coach move on without penalty despite the contract. It is unfair how coaches are treated differently than athletes in this regard. To me there is nothing fair or right about that discrepancy .

My point remains however, that the timing for losing a player or a coach right now is bad for the school and would be bad for the player/coach too if the school was the one instigating change because of the lack of available options this late for either side. The fact that the timing is bad does not change my mind that the school should release the player though. That is really the only point I intended to make.

You just don't seem to want to get it. It's already been explained to you a million times now. Josh Pastner was handed an extremely unique situation and has lost full control of it. What are you having trouble with? Do you know what some of these past Memphis teams would do to Josh partners Memphis schedule? Do you know what Cal would have done taking over a Memphis program left by a legend at the peak with Tulane and School for be blind on the schedule? You can tout any numbers you like, if you're trying to spin pastner in a positive light, you are misleading. No other Memphis coach in history played a Conference or CUSA schedule as weak as Josh pastner. Cal had to BUILD Memphis AND compete with Marquette, Louiville, Cincinatti, etc. Pastner was in a completely different situation. The only thing that was at all similar was the name MEMPHIS. STOP MISLEADING

6 total players in his class of '13. 1 remains. FIVE TRANSFERS in ONE CLASS. Do you have any idea how rare that is?

Taking over for a successful coach is not an extremely unique situation. Pastner took over a program at a relatively young age and based on his body of work has done a good job. You can list all the transfers you want but at the end of the day there are over 500 transfers a year so that's really not that big of a deal. He gets called out for his coaching? So what? Cal gets called out too. Steve Alford could win a championship at UCLA and those fans who literally hate on everything he does would still want him gone. It happens. But body of work matters more than all of that when you want to sit there make a claim about a coach.

For a program like Memphis, what Pastner has done has been good. If this was a blue blood than you would have a point, but it's not so you don't. He's not perfect. Some of his players hate him and he hasn't advanced very far in March. But at a school like Memphis that's fine because despite that their fan base thinks, their program isn't very good.

Why do you keep bringing up memphis beat writers and season ticket holders? That has nothing to do with anything. I dont need to know 40 bias Memphis fans to know what Pastners record is. I dont need to be familiar with any of the beat writers to know that the 4 years of greatness under cal was not the standard for Memphis. About once every 10 years or so Memphis is cute and goes on a little run. But overall you guys are an NIT/2nd round exit kind of program which is what Pastner has led yall to.

Marquette? Mississippi State? LOL. I mean, sure, Memphis is a shell of what it was under Calipari, but if you have any self-respect and professional aspirations, THOSE are your choices? Even if it isn't UK, how about at least considering a team that has sniffed an NCAA Tournament bid in the last 2 years...

Hell, Marquette and Mississippi State have been .500 or below.

You can't tell me the fan base expected this level of success when they hired him.

Saying that, guys who have to sit out a year probably are far and few on this roster. Harrow was a mitigated mess, and I don't expect to hear Cal going this route regularly.

Not true.

Would Cal TAKE Nichols? Yes.
Would Cal RELY on Nichols? No.

That's where he made the mistake on Harrow. Relying on a guy who had trouble previously and had yet to really show he was capable of handling the spotlight of being the UK starting PG. The only PG in the last decade that Cal has really misread.

Parrish is the only media he has talked to and he is local and has ties to the family dating back several years. Who knows. .........

Sorry you got hurt over my comment, "Coaches leave without permission how is that different?" I took your comment that his timing was bad to you believing that he shouldn't be able to leave. The dick comment was made in how Memphis was being a dick for not letting the kid go. And no you did not reference about a coach leaving whenever he wants but I thought its a really good thing to compare with in this situation. Honestly I thought you got way too over emotional over my original post and if you read it again there was nothing for you to get upset about. After that it did get out of hand somewhat so I'm sorry for anything that offended you.

That's true, and is there anyone in next year's class that would be upset by having this guy being around or would he be classified better then any of the front court guys being looked at by Cal?

13 transfers in 6 years.
5 transfers in one class.
Back to back NO post season.

Again,making top 10 money.

It's insane. Can anyone cite an example of a top ten paid coach having this abysmal record? Wsufan? Anyone?

You do realize Memphis averages around 16,000 people per game, right?. You do realize they are flooding away from pastner in droves and attendance is failing right? You keep talking like Memphis can't do better than a crap coach like pastner. I don't like memphis, but all you're doing now is trying to Deminish their program to bolster your flawed argument. He's THE SEVENTH HIGHEST PAID COACH IN D1. Get that through your head. This isn't Sam Houston state. Memphis has a big time history for NOT being a blue blood and has attnendance in the top 10 every. Single. Year. And you can't seem to get anything through your head. You SHOULD listen to the fans and beat writers. 2. Incredibly easier schedule than any coach before him
3. Had a program left to him at its height. Memphis didn't pay him top ten money so poeple like you could spin and mislead. They paid him that for success and he doesn't have it.

Do you even read my posts or do you just see that I responded to your post, write about how fans hate him and he's about to get fired, and then wait till I respond in order to argue the same straw man? I'm not saying memphis fans like him, so you can quit pushing a point that nobody is arguing against. I'm also not saying that he will not eventually be fired. My point is that for a program like Memphis, he is doing well. Memphis paying a top 10 salary does not make them a top level program. Furthermore, if Pastner was really in over his head and as bad as you say, how come he was able to take advantage of that "easier schedule". Wouldn't a guy who is in over his head not be able to do that by virtue of, you know, being in over his head?

How is saying that they were an NIT/early round exit kind of program prior to Cal's last 4 years diminishing their program? That's what they were. That's their history. Prior to Cal, they made it to the final game in the 70's, had a final four in the 80's, an elite 8 in the early 90's, and a hand full of sweet 16s here and there. Outside of that it was all NIT's and early round exits. Even Cal's first 5 seasons were full of that. Without a hall of fame level coach, that is Memphis's ceiling. That is what they are. If and when Pastner gets fired what the hell do you think is gonna happen? You think they magically become elite? No! When Pastner is gone you're gonna hire someone who will be barely .500 if not worse for his first 2-3 years until he gets "his guys" in and establishes his culture, and then the next few years until he gets fired he will do exactly what Pastner did which is make the NCAA tourney only to be gone in the first or second round.

Pastner had a program left to him at its height because of the COACH not the PROGRAM. Ku, UK, UNC, etc.. Could all lose their coach and be fine because of the program. Memphis can't because Memphis is not very good. That inner city talent from memphis got issues, as do the memphis fans which is part of the reason why Memphis will always be a by and large NIT/early exit program, with or without Pastner.

I've had several coaches pursuing Austin Nichols express concern that they haven't heard back from the family yet. Here's the deal ...

... I'm told the family will take about a week to sort through options. Then they'll contact schools. Then they'll try to decide by 8/1/15.


Bottom line, they don't want to lead anybody on unnecessarily. Would like to have a good idea of what's what before they make another move.

Just to add, not sure the consensus here, but Nichols as a redshirt Junior, is going to be at least as valuable to a team, as say a top 5 freshman at the same position, and I would argue more productive. Kid has first round potential.

But like someone said earlier, this doesn't help Cals' next agenda with getting the top players at that position. Cal's not looking for guys who may work themselves into the first round of the draft; he shoots for Top 10 every year.

I watched him in HS and he was very very skilled. This was way before him blowing up on the national scene. To me he was a stretch 4 with good size. He was hitting fall away 18 footers in others bigs faces then go down low and post up and finish for the and 1. Never really saw much of a vertical game from him though. But none the less this guy is going to be in the nba and who ever is getting him has got a very nice player.

Nichols to UK- starts and is a key player on another Final Four/title run, then goes in the first round. Best option to improve draft status ("The Kentucky Effect").

Nichols to Duke- probably plays behind Tatum and Giles up front. Probably the best shot at a Final Four/title (not significantly better than UK, though). Doesn't help his draft stock as much as going to UK, though.

Nichols to KU- probably starts and plays with several other college veterans (Mason, Graham, Greene, Mykhailiuk, maybe Bragg) on a team that makes a run at the Final Four/title. Doesn't improve his stock as much as going to UK, maybe better than Duke (Self is better at developing bigs than K, IMHO).

Nichols to Marquette- star on that team. Maybe leads them to the NCAA. Maybe goes first round. Big fish, little pond (Big Least) effect.

Nichols to Miss. St.- dumb move. Enjoy the NIT before trying your luck with the NBA. Howland is a good coach, but not on the level with Cal, K, and Self. At least be guaranteed one big game next year (against UK).

Nichols to UofL- starts on a decent team. Might make a deep run and might get drafted. Pitino isn't known for improving stock for players much these days.

Don't know who else is involved.

That's my take anyway.
