And then those jobs were added back gradually after the lockdowns were lifted, which dragged on for years in liberal controlled areas. By 2024 most of that had been worked out. The economy was also absorbing all of the new government jobs and illegal immigrants. These are real factors and if you wanted to have an honest conversation you would acknowledge them.

Mostly agree but the question is where these taxes will come from. One obvious solution to me is to massively gut our bloated social safety nets which have been abused by bottom feeding leeches for decades. Force the able bodied to go back to work and pay taxes like everyone else. Half the country not paying taxes is not sustainable, especially not with the open border policies the democrat party is actively pushing for.

Shrinking the federal workforce is an extremely minor factor when it comes to the debt situation.
On the spending side, entitlements and defense spending are the real issue. I think that Trump's federal workforce job cuts in the end will almost certainly cost more than they saved, but even if you accept Trump administration/MAGA claims per reductions in the federal workforce on their face the budget savings are minimal.
Going back to the turn of the century, Republicans passing huge tax cuts every time they get the trifecta is perhaps the biggest factor.
