Matt Wyatt was talking about it yesterday on his show. His opinion was basically, “If you want to claim them, claim them. The only people who are really going to care are going to be the fans of that school, so you might as well.” I tend to agree with him.

I don't get your point. You're saying that at some future date, people will assume the claimed title is legitimate? I don't have an interest in claiming mythical titles, regardless of whether one day people will consider them legitimate.

It doesnt matter if people think the titles are legitimate or not. People dont view some of Ole Miss and Bama's titles as legitimate, yet the schools continue to claim the titles.

There are no norms anymore. There are no formalities to follow. There is no need to pay deference to tradition.
Stanford is in the 17ing ACC, Oregon is in the damn Big10, the Big10 has 18 teams, and Mizzou is inexplicably still in the SEC!
Nothing 17ing matters at this point. Players are being paid directly by schools now. Its full on clown time and there is no shame in anything now.


Knowing this, MSU must claim some national titles from over 80 years ago!
Have fun doing it and embrace the absurdity! Do it tomorrow and directly troll Auburn as a result! None of it matters.

That was probably the best USC team of that era, absolutely destroyed Oklahoma in the title game. Had Auburn gotten in I’m not sure they would’ve fared much better.

Of course it was a good USC team. They were cheating their asses off. That’s kind of why they had to vacate that title.

Its pretty telling what has happened to that program as a whole since everybody can now legally do what they were doing in 2002-2005.

So, here's where I think Auburn is going off the rails a bit with their four newest championship claims. They are using obscure selection systems that aren't even recognized in the NCAA's college football records books. This is sad, because all the NCAA appears to require is the ranking system be national in scope.

Maybe some other schools do that, too, but not many.

For decades the NCAA has published an annual Football Records book that media members rely on as gospel (although I have found a few mistakes in it over the years). The NCAA denies ever having recognized an FBS champion, but devotes a whole section to results published by polls and other selection systems.

Here is what the NCAA recognizes:



None of those selection systems named Auburn as champions in 1910, 1914, 1958, or 2004.

By contrast, all of Alabama's claimed championships are included, because the Houlgate mathematical ranking system that inexplicably calculated Alabama as the #1 team in 1941 is recognized as a major selection source by the NCAA.

While I agree with some of the argumrnts here that schools are basically free to claim any championship season they want, it seems you should at least be able to point to some type of third party recognition. Maybe we can get the Clarion-Ledger to award State the 1941 championship? Or I would be happy to publish the results of the Dawgzilla Ranking system...

I think you're basically saying that we live in a clown world, so we might as well behave like clowns.

I don't agree. Opting out of the clown world (in this case, not claiming a title 80+ years after the fact) is always an option.

I mean, yeah I agree with this and it's how I live my life and expect those around me to live their lives.
...but society sure as 17 seems to embrace and celebrate the general clown behavior in many parts of life and it is working well.


It's nihilistic, but when so much in society is a joke or a troll or a dunk, and truth is happily set aside, well perhaps the game should be played by all.
No reason to sit grumpily on the bench while everyone else is having fun.
