It’s University of Nebraska Lincoln, not Nebraska University so UNL. Northwestern is one word, that’s why it’s not NWU, but NU.
There's no Oklahoma University, either. But everyone refers to them as OU. If we were better nobody would be questioning why we refer to ourselves as NU. It's from our days in the Big 8. A long standing tradition. Since we are the ones with over 800 wins then I'll refer to Northwestern as NWU. Or not. All I know is that we are NU. Anyone that has a problem with that does not know our history.
Nebraska has won 893 football games while Northwestern has only managed 489. Until and unless they can ever catch Nebraska in that all important area Nebraska will be the one and only NU. Hope this puts that little issue to bed once and for all. GBR
Didn’t the helmets in 67 have NU on them rather than just the N?
I went to UNL as well. NU refers to the athletic program. But you knew that.

Lyrics written in 1924. You'll notice the writer didn't say U of Nebraska-Lincoln. I realize that there wasn't multiple campuses back then. The point being that we have lots of traditions at Nebraska. We don't suddenly lose that because of a conference move, or the fact that we now have video boards at the stadium or because it's 2018.
