Athlon article on Mo Washington

The gist of it is basically this:

Frost and Co know what they are doing with roster management. They've picked up three transfers this season (Daniels, Noa, Vokolek), and don't have a ton of room, or a ton of time, to implement another transfer.

So, one can infer from this that they expect Washington to play against South Alabama. Mills is here and learning/working, and we have our backups, but the lack of a transfer RB right now means they expect whatever Washington eventually gets handed down to him will still allow him to play.

Thoughts?

Unless Mo is convicted of a felony in California (unlikely IMO) or he does something else (more serious than getting caught with pot), he'll be on the team. I think Mo already was being punished this Spring by not being allowed to participate in the Spring game and missing some practices.

If they were going to dismiss Mo why would they have kept him on the team so far? IMO they would have cut ties and filled the scholarship slot by now as the article says. That assumes, of course, he is NOT convicted of a felony which would change things.

I can agree with that. As early as late last fall, his then attorney didn't believe they had enough to even charge him. So just my assumption, their case is very weak. I think there is more context going on here than what we know about. If the coaching staff had any concern about Mo not playing I believe they would have been going after a RB transfer just in case. Especially since Mills was iffy up to last week. Then to fill up the last possible spot with a TE transfer says they aren't worried about MO.

I think that was some of his punishment yes, but going to assume there will be more. I could see him being held out the first game maybe 2.

The "more" part of it depends on what the outcome is in the California courts. And I think it is smart for Frost/Moos to wait and see. After all he hasn't been convicted of anything in California yet.

Could be wrong on this but cutting MO loose doesn't free up a Scholarship for this year. I think it was set.

Frost could be waiting to see what the courts decide before he does. That would only be prudent. He doesn't want to go all beat down on MO only to have everything change in the courts. He has to wait and then make his decision.

If I'm the staff I'm more concerned about hedging for the next stupid decision he makes than the outcome of this one. Kid hasn't exactly cobbled together a collection of wise choices or built an image of himself as a kind-hearted forward thinker. Might want to carry an extra spot in that position room when he makes himself unavailable.

I think most on here know I’m not worried about Mo Washington. I don’t see him going anywhere. These charges are apparently weak. For the Cal DA, it seemed like it was either charge him of something or let it go. But taking the DA about a year to charge him shows they didn’t have much of anything on him and was searching and trying hard to find something....two: the attorney that helped Washington from the Huskers said himself he didn’t see Mo getting charged with anything to start with. This will get dropped to charge that allows probation and then we can finally move on from it. I just hope from then on Mo keeps it low key...

I just read that the continuance today was due to discovery. So with all due respect to his former attorney, they still don’t have all, or haven’t seen all of the evidence the prosecution has.

Yup! My guess is he plays until something significant causes him to be kicked off of the team. That might be ANOTHER stupid-*** decision, or actually being found guilty in CA sometime in the next...what, year? lol.

I think you all are correct to say the best thing is to just recruit more star RB's to hedge against this guy not lasting the full four years at NU. He...doesn't inspire confidence in terms of staying out of trouble. Damn good RB though!

Getting Bivens as a walk-on could be a great pickup.

Thompkins could be a dark horse.

Rhamir gets me excited.

Brody Belt had solid spring. I also always liked Moses Bryant more as an RB, so I like what he could bring to depth after his late switch.

Jaylin Bradley- ummm? hope he grows and reaches full potential.

Oh yeah, there’s some guy named Mazour people like.

Mills- yeah yeah- I believe the hype, but can’t wait to ”see” the hype.

We’ll get the attention of more speedster RB recruits going forward, but wanna get the speed/power, first round pick RBs.... (the kind that aren’t douchef*cks)... and they “should” know Nebraska makes a good home, so bring em on.

P.S. RB’s aint sh*t w/o OL which we’re “building”.

Bivens? Is he the running back that visited last year but didn't sign with us?

If you were to have a depth chart from the dudes you mentioned, it would look like this:

1. Mills
2. Rahmir Johnson
3. Mazour
4. Bradley
5. Belt

Thompkins will redshirt as they give him more time to recover. (Might play in November)

Sure would be nice to have a back like Devine again this year. 2 new guys on top of the depth chart is a little concerning. I hope Bradley has his head screwed on straight and is ready to roll because I think we may need him.

Bivens will likely be in Lincoln, but he won't even suit up in 4 games. His injury was dramatic last season, and he may never practice until Fall camp of 2020.
I'm assuming that Bivens may qualify for quite a bit of financial aid to the point that walking on isn't a big financial hit for him? Not all walk ons at NU are paying for all of their school.

I think Nebraska is in trouble if they are forced to play Bradley. He's not a Big Ten level player.

I can’t help but think that the staff would put Miles Jones in the running back room ahead of Bradley and Belt and in my opinion even ahead of Mazour even though Wyatt is fully capable..

I thought he looked really good at times playing his freshman year. IMO, it all depends on how hard he's worked in the off season. You don't have to be a burner to be an effective back in the B1G.

No doubt it’ll be an interesting group to watch this fall.

We’ve got a roster with so many solid pieces and big time potential, but still so many holes/question marks in several areas. Many/most teams are going through the same thing, but we don’t wanna be like many teams, we want to beat many teams.

He and Wandale will play The Duck R-- that won't waiver.. They will get carries, but their spot is determined.

Didn’t Bivens come on an official visit? He had a scholarship offer for sure. If he gets any aid, academic or otherwise, he will count against the 85

If he gets financial aid based on his parents income, how would that count against the 85? I don't know if he would qualify for federal loans?

It’s just the rules. Unfortunately they put rules in place to prevent schools from circumventing the max allowed scholarship rules. Now at 85.
I didn't think that made any sense so I looked it up. Need based aid is exempted as is academic based aid if they meet certain conditions.

Certain conditions are that they weren’t recruited and didn’t take official visits. It is similar to how the kid from Rutgers can blueshirt and not count as the 30th new player for 2019.
