So I looked at some of our remaining targets and it seems that fans of other schools are tweeting at recruits fairly regularly. Often those recruits retweet those messages. It seems that recruits appreciate "the love fans are showing them". So many schools' fans are using Twitter as a way to show how passionate the school's fanbase is. If WE aren't doing it then we are falling behind.

I remember this being a topic a year or so ago and it was shouted down by the Baby Boomers on this board as being creepy and (laughably) a potential recruiting violation BUT we could assist the Ash Era by tweeting some of the positives of what Rutgers has to offer to potential players. EVERYONE else is doing it. .

For the benefit of our older fan base, if you were on your way to the travel agent or maybe to rent a movie at Blockbuster and you recognized a big time RU recruit standing there reading a newspaper, would you say "Go RU" or "Rutgers is a great university and we are happy you are considering going there"? This is basically the same thing.

It is 2016- time to get with the times. Social media is the way people under 25 interact. Our staff is doing it. They are embracing the power of social media. This fan base should too. Many people on this board get bring up tweets from a prospect but are you proactive in espousing the benefits of RU?

50 tweets at them from fans will have more of an impact than 50 copies of the same letter from a school's recruiting staff arriving in his mailbox.

Below is a sample of Syracuse fans tweets being retweeted by KJ SAILS in just one day:

Using Twitter depends almost as much on what you do for a living as your age. I'm in my forties, but every writer I know is on Twitter -- same as every person in public relations. We've all been on it since the beginning. It's not just kids under 25.

Many people seem to think there's nothing worth their time on Twitter. That's most likely not true. For every celebrity tweet, there are tons that probably would be of interest to you. I follow tons of wineries, wine bloggers, and wine sommeliers on Twitter. It's actually amazing how much you can learn in a particular topic from the tweets and article links that come in.

Maybe people should try checking out twitter for a topic to get the hang of it and then figure out how to start getting involved with the recruits. It should be easier if you actually find a way to like using Twitter.

Like it or not, HS recruits weigh fan base passion as a factor in deciding where to go to school. Twitter is a way to amplify a fan bases passion (hell, the apathetic Syracuse fans apparently is getting Sails' attention).

Frankly, I'm very surprised that this super-active forum (which is a form of social media) has not leveraged that passion to try to win over football players that are considering RU . Believe me, recruiting is a no-holds barred sport. Tweets (unless you are officially associated with the university) are hardly overstepping any bounds. If used smartly, twitter can be an effective tool. Again, like it or not, football players consider tweets as a proxy for fan base passion. You never know what gets a player over hump to sign....

No different than using any new tool. It's not the tool.but how you use it. No different than searching the Internet or Facebook. Lots of good stuff and research etc but also lots if spam and unrelated junk. And add on the bozos who think writing in non-English or some kind of code is cool. The good stuff is extremely valuable as noted above by Lightly but there us a segment that perhaps both old and young can't figure or even digest.

There is a group from Rutgers that tweets at recruits, and frankly most of it and the other tweets at recruits make me want to vomit. First it is an NCAA violation to tweet directly to a recruit, second a donwe think a kid that bases thier decision and future on a 144 character message from multiple unknown fans.

If you do want to get involved, simply retweet or like their Rutgers only tweets and leave the recruitng to the coaches.

There is one guy...maybe he posts here his twitter handle is somethin like JBSS something.....he is an embarassment to Rutgers. He is regularly involve with arguments similiar to this board.....with other fans.....with the recruits tagged directly.....literally embarrassing. His JG fight with JG included was beyond horrific....

Anyway I use twtter and follow recruits...but really thing engaging them beyond..."good luck with your decision" or "welcome to the banks"

IMHO fans meddling in recruiting is a disaster waiting to happen. Some kid retweets something from a fan, the fans get encouraged, some fan who means well says something inappropriate, then the entire thing derails. No good can come from this.

Does anyone remember someone getting really creepy during Huggins' recruitment? John O had to put out the fires from that if I remember correctly, we could have easily lost Huggins over that. And Huggins' being a bust for RU doesn't matter, can you imagine how this board would have reacted if we'd lost a 5* recruit because of a meddling fan?

It's a shame that every time this subject comes up, us older guys get a lecture from some douche like the OP. Usuallly the same old straw man that we are somehow opposed to supporting our team through social media.

Here's a clue: lead by example, instead of insulting people. Tweet to the recruits, and post a link so others can, too. Those that want to help will. Do this instead of doing nothing, accusing others of the same, and then complaining on a forum that our recruits read.

In my 20s, I have little interest in Twitter, and zero interest in tweeting at high school kids in order to further entice them to come play for RU. But hey, as long as it's not a NCAA violation or downright creepy, be my guest.

OH my, what a hypocrite. He was re-tweeting every time someone mentioned him at the camp. Now that he sucked at the game and he was a disaster he now says the game doesn't mean anything.

A true kid, who does anything to draw attention to himself except when he sucks.

Fans Tweeting recruits is not an NCAA violation simply because it is so pervasive, the NCAA doesn't even attempt to nor have they ever investigated it. It happens all day everyday.

If JG is in any way, shape or form a head case then this is not the place for him to come play football. This thread alone proves it. Move on, you look like fools.

I don't understand when people "text message" me. l ask them repeatedly to telephone me or write a well written letter. I also rather enjoy receiving newspaper clippings of recent happenings. In this way, I stay current.

Fair enough. Some will embrace it, some will cheer from the sideline and some would rather wring their hands and shout at each other in this tempest in a teapot forum.

The world has changed.

Sorry but I just can't imagine "following" some random 16-18 year old kid on Twitter. It would just seem uncomfortable to me.

The best way a fan can help recruiting is show up early and tailgate and be loud at the game. Make a great environment. Let the coaches recruit, they know what they are doing.

I don't know about you but it looks like Sails is really considering Sorrycuse and that makes me sick to my stomach. The nervousness of how this class finishes is starting to give me hives, I can't wait until this dead period ends so Ash can get out and git'er dun on the in home visits.
