There is a nice article about former NU and Charger db Pete Shaw in today’s San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper which delves into his relationship with Coach Fitz.

As the article indicates, Fitz reached out to Pete to come back and speak to the team years ago and they’ve had an ongoing friendship since. Pete was a hardiitting db during my time at NU in the early ‘70’s ( This was at the time our great Coach Alex left for Purdue after being discouraged by the lack of support by Strotz and the “dark ages” were ushered in with Coach Pont, his successor.)

After his time at NU, Pete went on to be a star db with the Chargers during the Don “Air Coryell” era. Pete will be actively participating with the team in Holiday Bowl activities starting today when the team arrives downtown at their hotel.

I’ve met Pete a few times over the years. He was a frequent customer at a Chinese restaurant in Pacific Beach owned by a friend so I ran into him there a few times. Pete was a local hs coach for awhile and would keep NU staff (esp Coach Brown) informed about prospects in this area.

Pete Shaw- distinguished NU alum and player, great man of character. I’m sure Pete is thrilled to have the Wildcats coming to San Diego to play in the Holiday Bowl!

Pete Shaw was the hardest hitting Wildcat I've seen. Great DB in the 70's.

Great line by Shaw on a$$-kicking.

By the time he was at NU his older brother Woody was a jazz great whose life was cut short.

Wow, never knew Woody Shaw was his brother. He played a mean horn.

An article about Pete Shaw was enough to get this longtime lurker off the sidelines and onto the Board. Pete Shaw was indeed the hardest hitting defensive back in the B10...and he took great pleasure bringing it in practice as well as games. Very happy to see him active in today’s program...good dude.

He was also very intelligent, articulate and a good student. I was a TA in the Spanish Department in ‘72/‘73 and Pete was in the first year Spanish class I taught.

A real gentleman.

Had some other football players in the same class and they were terrible students.

This story is why I love this site. Pete was a victim of the "Bob Strotz" de-emphasis of football (Ivy league anybody?). Fitz is very mindful of those who came before, particularly in The Dark Ages.

Here is to seeing Strotz turn over in his grave a lot because of the success of NU Football over the last couple decades.

It's nice to see some light shine here on Pete Shaw and his excellent athletic and academic career at NU. Pete was a class act. Fitzphile is correct in that Pete was the hardest hitting safety in the Big Ten back then. His car wreck-like collisions in scrimmages, often against 6' 230-lb tailback Greg Boykin, erase all doubt in my mind.

I was surprised to read that he played at 185 pounds. Looked and hit a lot bigger.

Pete and Greg were both class acts as well as great players...we fielded some decent players on those teams. Sadly, it turned out to be the dawn of the dark ages.
