Are there some kind of rules for a coach's son being a walk-on? Like, what if Del Curry was coaching a college team and had his son, Steph, walk-on?
The rules for recruiting are the same but obviously there are some gray areas in terms of contact with a recruit if he lives in the same house as the coach. It sort of gets you an extra player though. Remember, Tubby didn't have GG sign a letter of intent with TU. He would have been on scholarship pretty much anywhere else. Had GG signed a letter of intent, he would have had to sit a year when Tubby left (remember the NCAA wasn't as lenient). Since he hadn't signed a letter of intent and his dad had probably not filled out the employee tuition benefit form yet, he was free and clear to play at UGa.
The biggest difference is when you walk on and then want to transfer. One of the questions that used to come into play about immediate eligibility and/or transferring to another school in conference was whether or not you were recruited as a walk-on (preferred status). Remember this was the whole issue with Baker Mayfield leaving Texas Tech and transferring to OU. Mayfield claims he was never recruited at Tech. With him going to a conference school the Big XII rule at the time was he would have to sit out 2 years, scholarship or no. Part of it was Texas Tech would not release him to OU and a hearing council at Tech upheld that (made up of admins and professors outside of the athletic dept.).
Of course with all the new transfer rules and the NCAA being somewhat lax in the enforcement of sitting out (unless you come to TU), it's all a moot point.
