For context, I work in healthcare admin so can't work from home. Am also the single dad of 2 young kids who are now out of school til (at least) Apr. 17. Before this hit, I usu. bought household supplies from Amazon, Target.com and Walmart.com, and usu did a once a week Walmart pickup order for perishables/fresh food.
I'm enforcing it as much as I can ... I'm having to use sitters to keep the kids while I go to work. No playdates, no shopping, no movies, no eating out (I live in Oxford and they've just restricted restaurants to take out, so doesn't really matter now). Our church has cancelled all in-person stuff and does the Sunday sermon live streaming on Facebook. And I've kept on doing my household ordering stuff in the usual way ... until yesterday. Everything I needed (detergent, cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP, etc.) wasn't in stock at Amazon, Target or Walmart. So I tried to do a Walmart pickup order ... and it said there wasn't an avail pickup time "in the next 7 days," but that I should check back later. Tried again late last night, and now there was a pickup time avail for today, so I started shopping. Everything I needed was either out of stock, or when I tried to add it to my cart it would take it right back out.
So, needing to feed 2 kids and a sitter all day for the foreseeable future I decided 17 it, I'll go to Walmart this morning in person. It was insane. I'm a Gen Xer and it represented the worst of what we suspect. There was an old redneck cat in there, wearing latex gloves and clip-on suspenders, telling somebody super loud on a cell phone, "I got y'all a big pack of pre-cooked chicken nuggets" and a college-age couple picking up fresh produce and looking at it before putting it disapprovingly back. A regular petri dish. And most of the shelves were as empty as the worst Snowmageddon you've ever imagined.
Awful.
