Are people really social distancing?

I have my kids on lock down. I go to my office to wrap up what I can. We have plenty of office space and just a few employees so we never have to get close.

But HOLY **** these people in my neighborhood are driving me crazy. No one is banning their kids from playing with other kids, no one (but us) is sending kids away if they knock on the door. No lie, the past 3 days I've come home from work and there are groups of kids, usually 8 or more, playing basketball, playing on a slip n slide, going to the pool, riding bikes together. All the parents are congregating and bringing food and beer and hanging out.

This is not a hurricane party people!

We're keeping our kids entertained and letting them in the yard, but we're not interacting with other kids or families.

Is this happening where you guys are? I just don't understand the mind set of these people that are still hanging out. Do they not think this will happen to them or do they just not care?

This isn't meant to be a rant (though it is). Just curious what you guys are seeing.

We are doing it. Our kids playing outside but only in our driveway and they yell from distance to the neighbors. It's actually pretty funny.

I'm ready to be back at work though.

If you can't take the simple social distancing advice seriously and practice it the best you can, IMO you're incredibly ignorant. I'd simply continue to set an example of how idiots don't act for the idiots in your neighborhood.

Not quite that bad but definitely seeing some parties going on. Have 7 or 8 cars parked at a single house.

We are actually doing it and it's actually kind of nice so far. Might feel differently after another week of it.

That said, what I do see a ton of is people doing carry out. Which is fine if the person preparing your food is not sick or manages to not breath/cough/sneeze on it or spread by touching after they cook it. But that seems like a **** ton of faith to put in your average food preparer if you are going through the trouble of social distancing and/or disrupting your work schedule.

****, we have city officials encouraging it. Better I guess than people dining in, but counterproductive considering all the pain we are voluntarily inflicting otherwise.

Yes

I am following protocol. And aside from one trip to the store and one to the office, I've been at home for more than a week. I am working from home.

Those not taking it serious are a big problem.

I went to Lowe’s three days ago to buy mower blades. Knew where they were and was running in and out. I swear, it was like in was Black Friday mixed with an AARP convention. And these people weren’t being deliberate. They were all just hanging out, window shopping. I decided to drive around town and everywhere was packed. But, that always explains why the coast has so many cases.

We are certainly staying away from as much as we can. Kids are playing the backyard only. We may go take a hike in some woods nearby, but we will definitely not be getting close to anyone else during that hike.

We drew up plans for an awesome ninja course in the backyard last night. When the rain moves out, we'll be setting that thing up.

Yep. Me and a few friends, all healthy mid-ish 30s, even cancelled a weekend ski trip (not at a resort) where we would have only been around each other. Specifically because of the idea that "any unnecessary risk you take could negatively effect someone else", and most of the outdoor spots people want to flock to are small, rural areas with limited resources. My wife and I were shaking our heads yesterday at the teenagers/kids hanging around the neighborhood though. They just can't handle alone time apparently.

Absolutely

I didn’t go to the gym today. We have a bunch of kids, so we kicked the worst 2 out to give more space to the rest of us.**

The local bars near my house have dwindled down to just a few patrons... which, 17 those people... and there are way less people out and about.

As far as I can tell in our neighborhood everyone is keeping to themselves. We have been to the store twice this week and I sanitize going in and going out. We try to space out at work but it’s not really sometimes when you’re working on heavy equipment in a shop. Would be a lot easier if we were in the field.

She thought we were low on hand soap cause there was no more in store. We have plenty cause there is a new bottle at every sink.

She was "trying to help" so yesterday she left at lunch....went to kroger, dollar general and wal mart. I made her cry telling her how dumb that was.

I really think this "can't happen to me" mentality is whats causing this.

It just isnt going to work if half of us do what were supposed to do.

The park in my neighborhood was packed with people playing ball yesterday

Basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts all busy.

A bunch of people just refuse to take this seriously.

We're doing it. Gotta make some quick stops at businesses still though, but trying to be careful there.

edit: my parents in MS want me to come visit over spring break though. I'm getting guilt about possibly not doing it. I don't think they've been taking it very seriously, nor my sibling's family, who I'd be around a lot if I visited. Gonna be hard to say no.

The issue is moral hazard. The benefits (still going out) go to the individuals, but the costs (disease transmission, taking up a hospital bed if you get sick) are borne by society.

If you want to solve the problem, take down the names of those violating the social distancing rules and make it where they are the lowest priority for treatment. Sure they can get treatment if it's available, but if someone else who was obeying the rules gets sick, that person jumps ahead of the rule breaker.

Tennis courts don't seem that crazy to me. It would be fairly easy for us to get to the court and not get near anybody. Even if you don't have anybody in your household that plays, interacting with a single other person practicing social distancing otherwise doesn't seem like a big risk.

While the risks may now seem more pronounced, aren’t you trusting that all of that is happening under normal circumstances, anyway?

Haven't done Lowes but we have been to the store several times. Some our fault for not planning well, some an issue with stuff being out of stock, and then ultimately trying to restock as close as possible to the time it actually gets bad. We can probably make it a couple of weeks without really missing anything big at this point.

I have been WFH since Tuesday. My wife worked Tuesday and Thursday. Other than that none of us have been out of the house since Tuesday and won't be going out for groceries again until next week. I hope everyone else starts taking it seriously and let's just leave all the spring breakers in Florida.

It's holding steady in our neighborhood for now.

With more stats leaking out, I'm not sure how long that will last. We've got news agencies trying to hang on to the "young people are at risk" angle by rearranging the statistical bands to justify dramatic headlines, when the truth appears to be we should've focused our efforts by age groups and roles.

ETA: There was one small dinner party the other night that I know of. 6-8 folks, with the hosts being among the oldest.

Our kids arent playing with others in the neighborhood and almost all social/athletic activities for the kids, my wife, and me have been cancelled.
So yeah, we are practicing it to the extent we can.

The grocery store yesterday was crazy, but that cant really be avoided. It was funny to see the random **** that's out of stock. All ramen noodles are gone. All eggs- gone. All yogurt- gone. Same with pasta, jarred salsa, ap flour, and pancake batter.
Wt17?!
Anyways, that place was a zoo.

We went to a small chain gardening center today so the kids can work on planting whatever they want for transplant outside.

Besides that, its work from home for adults and the kids play minecraft, read books, and do some schoolwork.

Once the weather is better next week, itll be a ton of hiking, bike rides, horse riding, and dog walks.

This is a potentially terrible situation and has wrecked the economy a good bit, but it's also quite an interesting social experiment. Out google calendar is 17ing empty for the first time since we had kids. We are a close family already, but this is a ton more of 1 on 1 time than usual.
Its interesting to look at from a distance.

Nope. No one in my area gives 2 ***** about this. Rural places where it shouldn’t spread that bad are going to end up being hot zones because people aren’t taking that serious

It really seems like the under 25 crowd and the over 65 crowd are the two main groups who just don't get it.

The wife works healthcare (therapy) and has still be going to their clinic but with greatly reduced hours.

My line of work involves a lot of office work mixed with field work (think in the middle of the sticks/boondocks). I’ve been working from home regarding the office work, but have had to make a couple trips out for Field work.

The only real contact I’ve made with the public has been pumping gas, picking up a to-go order, and a couple calculated runs to the grocery store in the past week and a half. And I’ve been doing my best to maintain distance and wash/sanitize hands regularly and after being in public. But then again, I’m a reasonable human. Some of these folks are just plain ignorant.

I will say I’m growing tired of the virtue signaling coming from certain (predictable) friends on my social media. Essentially lambasting anyone who don’t stay behind locked doors 24/7. It’s possible to effectively social distance without going 100% lock down. Doesn’t mean everyone does it, though, so I guess I get the argument.

That said, I’m chasing a turkey in the middle of Timbuktu in the morning and if that doesn’t count as social distancing/quarantine I don’t know what does.**

Tennis I don't have a problem with, other than to say how packed everything was.

The full basketball court is the one I winced at.

We are as much as possible- haven’t been but to the pharmacy and Walmart gas station the last week. What kills me is this weekend is my 4 year old’s sons mom time weekend. She isn’t budging when I tell her I don’t think it’s a good idea that I send him to her. Not much I can do considering our court ordered agreement.

She also isn’t the brightest one and doesn’t think this virus is any worse than the flu.

Also if any of you remember, I am immunocompromised so that’s another factor in me worrying about sending him with her.

Neither have kids. To me that's a big part of it, because you realize the world isn't about you at that point.

Of course, most of the older crowd did have kids at one point (and I assume most have grandkids), but I guess they forgot and went back to being selfish shitheads again.

Yes, and I’ve also gotten the cold and flu from sick restaurant workers before I’m sure. But if we’re going get to shut down schools, it seems idiotic to run a bunch of people through restaurants.

Not legal advice, but I'd probably just keep the son this weekend and tell her that she can have him extra when this blows over and to otherwise go get a court order if she wants him. Document everything in email and promise to be extra accommodating when this blows over and then take the chance that the judge won't be too pissed if it comes to that.
