Are face masks, gloves, with Poncho's a solution?

Can you imagine the logistical and enforcement nightmare it would be to try to require 60,000 people packed together to all be wearing ponchos, gloves and masks?

I doubt it could be done.

WTF would a rain poncho or gloves do to protect again Covid-19? The virus isn’t absorbed through the skin.

Gloves absolutely make a difference. Why do you think we're constantly being told to wash our hands? The fingers are a very common transportation device for the virus.

As for the poncho part, I have no idea.

The gloves are meant to keep the virus off your hands so you don't put it on your face.

Gloves work great for a very few minutes. We wear them at the hospital when we go into the room of a patient with COVID, MRSA or other infections that are high risk for spreading. I wear them in the room, I take them off in the room. I don't put them on and then go to three more rooms. I don't put them on and go into a room and then go eat my hot dog and drink my beer.

Gloves at games won't work. The gloves can have the virus on them the same as your hands can. Then you drink your beer and touch your face. You touch your hot dog and put it into your mouth.

If anything, the gloves are worse. You need people frequently washing their hands.

Throwing this idea out there and see what the push back may be? There are plastic disposable ponchos that cover you from head to toe for rain, or Gallagher comedy events. If everyone was required to wear one at the football games and maybe it might work indoors too for basketball wouldn't that be a reasonable safety accomodation? I would think for outdoor football you would have to move day games to night games in warmer weather and indoors you need to blast the ac.

I know there may be a few a-holes in any crowd that decide they won't cooperate and either they are not allowed in or escorted out. It is not a perfect solution but it does seem like a reasonable accomodation.

Several of us discussing this today thought it would be interesting to see the responses. So blast away.

Pretty sure I'm goin to stay home and watch this crap shoot from the comfort of my home.

I know a lot of people here are making fun of the idea. Ok, there are a lot of issues with the idea. So come up with something better. But, aren't you desperate for sports again? I am. So make all the jokes you want but you are not going to be watching anything from the comfort of your home if there is no solution. Ignoring that this is a very real crisis won't help either. We have a real possible opportunity for a 9th Championship if everyone is eligible. It will be extremely sad if there is no college basketball. Saying you are not going to wear a mask, gloves, or anything else is not going to fix the problem or mean there will be a season.

We're discussing sports here, or entertainment/kids playing a game....
This stuff takes a back seat to real life which worries me way more.
Desperate for sports? Naw I'd rather see some form of things going back to normal.

how was the virus?
I thought this was funny,, and is probably true..

All y'all make fun of East Ky but this is the place to be when it all goes down. Covid 19 barely bothered us because theres nothing to do for us to need to gather. Murder Hornets havent been a big deal because half of us get high by smoking wasp spray. And when the zombie apocalypse does come, we will be fine because we are all heavily armed and no one has teeth to bite anybody. #KentuckyAgainstAllYall

Link that study, please.

Here you go:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/27/health/us-coronavirus-face-masks.html

That isn't the actual study (which goes more in depth), but it at least references the study. If I can find the full scientific article I'll post that instead. According to this, the surgical mask is supposed to be 68% effective, whereas the N95 is about 91% effective. While the N95 is certainly superior, I am actually quite impressed by how much an ordinary $0.79 disposable mask apparently helps. I'll certainly take 68% effective over zero effectiveness.

There's probably a very good reason why we've seen Asians wearing masks for years. They flat out work. While certainly not fool proof, they do help. And they work both ways. Not only does wearing a mask reduce the risk of breathing in someone else's infectious cough/sneeze droplets, but masks greatly reduce the risk of an infected person spewing out their disease infested snot/spit in the first place. The masks are probably much more effective in that capacity which makes for a good argument in why we should all wear them when visiting public places. The mask I wear protects you from me and vice versa.

I'm still trying to figure why wait over 4 mths into it and "try" to tell a person to wear masks.. .

That's because they didn't even have enough for hospitals four months ago, much less have to compete with the general public for them. It was a lie because any barrier would have to be better than no barrier. We just didn't have enough for people to buy.

Bandanna and coffee filter. Looks badass to boot. Especially with a brimmed hat and a Super Blackhawk on the side.

I read the linked study. Points to an average of 68% effectiveness of surgical masks, primarily in a hospital setting.

There are some glaring issues here, imo.

First, N95 >> Surgical Mask >>> cloth covering.

Second, non-medical professionals outside of a hospital setting are destined to fail in following proper procedures related to maintenance, cleanliness, and disposal of face coverings.

Bottom line, imo...it might help a little in some cases, it may hurt a little in some cases. There isn’t compelling evidence in support of mandatory usage, as far as I’ve been able to decipher.

What has anything that's been done have to do with health it's all about power and control. Where are the people that cried bloody murder about the patriot act?
I complained plenty about the Patriot Act and what is going now is a new chapter to all of that.

They should play on just like they do when flu season hits every year. This whole thing has been grossly exaggerated. This response has not been close to logical based on actual facts.

Beshear will allow no school in the fall or sports in my opinion. All democratic governors have been ordered to do this until after the election. Look at NY Mich California NY Illinois for reference. I am not sure there will be any high school or college sports until there is a vaccine which may never happen. Welcome to the third world.

I got an idea those who want to go to sporting events can go and let us enjoy life and those who want to stay home just stay home. I'm going to be 75 next month and am very healthy and i would go if they have football & basketball.

The problem isn't you or being healthy. It is the people who have their defensive mechanism of denying the nature of this virus and how easily it is transmitted. So, some people refuse to use common sense and then are a risk to others. The guys yelling and screaming about their freedoms are OK but only to the degree that they don't infringe on other people's freedom to remain healthy. Some of these idiots are the ones spreading the virus. How do you control them? They are not you yet would very likely come to the games "because the constitution says it" or some goofball idea.

I started this post just with what I knew was a crazy concept but trying to have people think about ways we might get sporting events going especially with Kentucky basketball. I can't imagine anyone on this site who are fans don't want to see the great team that Cal has assembled never play. Instead, most of the posts are weak reflecting only put-downs, or cynicism, rather than anything constructive. That's much easier to do.

BING, effing OHHHH
I was just watching a guys with gloves leave home depot...he buys a Coke with other stuff in the self checkout line, bags it with other stuff...goes to car, gets coke out and starts drinking it and drives off with gloves still on...I doubt that when he arrived at his destination that he wiped down the car (parts that he touched), the Coke bottle, the things he bought at home depot, discarded the bag and gloves and then washed his hands thoroughly before entering his destination

I can see where you're going. I work in healthcare and for reference we have "thin" plastic cover gowns at work that we wear for isolation patients. Let me tell you that if you have to spend a reasonable amount of time in there I start sweating. This wouldn't be as big of a issue in the winter at football but in early season or a gym situation for basketball it wouldn't be that fun. That's not counting the mask ect that you would need to be effective overall I don't see it working tbh.
