Are big-time coaches smart?

How "smart" are high-level football coaches really? Just watching two of the best coaches in the game make huge mistakes in the most critical moment possible made me question this. I think I just get sick of people referring to some coaches as "geniuses." What say you? Are these high-level coaches really that smart or is it just because they know a lot about football that they make so much as coaches? Because those are two different things.

If they actually aren't that smart, why aren't you there taking away their $5mil jobs?

Your question is redundant and really doesn't make sense. In general, people make what they are worth...

By not taking the time out after the 1st down run, Belichick took away the option for Carroll to run the ball 4 times, forcing a pass on either 2nd or 3rd down. Carroll's big mistake was throwing into a crowded middle of the field instead of either to a wide open receiver or throw the ball away.

I think most of the best coaches are better at leading, and getting players to do what they tell them, than X/O decision making. You hear it all the time, but it is true....execution is key to any offense.

So, to me, no....it does not surprise me that a coach out-thought himself in a high-pressure situation.

The better coaches will run better practices and prepare his team for anything and everything. The defender on that play didn't make any kind of heroic move. He knew what could be coming and where he needed to be. He even said so when interviewed after the game.
