I think this dude is a decent coach and about as good of a hire IU could have hoped for at this stage of their Crean coached years. How they let Crean stay as long as IU coach always confuses me. It really shouldn't take the people in the know at IU to figure out the dude can't coach basketball at a high level.

This always made me laugh, since Crean is 3-0 against Kentucky in the NCAA tournament.

I believe they didn't reach out to Alford.

Tell me exactly what Alford has accomplished as a head coach.

I think the media just assumed Alford because of his background, and others jumped on board. But, you're right, there's no evidence they were ever really interested in him at all.

Instead, despite the media speculation, appears their search was actually very simple: they were interested in Miller, talked to him, liked him, offered him, search over.

I gotta say Greg Marshall must be the biggest a$$ hole in the world because he is an excellent, excellent coach and from reports he privately campaigned for the Texas job and wasn't really considered and I don't think IU really considered him either. He has been excellent at both Winthrop and Wichita State and the top dogs won't give him a sniff. I understand he has a grating personality to deal with but when your coaching ability is that high you must really be something for your attitude to outweigh your coaching talent to these athletic directors.

Absolutely agreed that Gregg Marshall is an excellent coach. One of the tops in the country, hands-down, no doubt about it. That said, I think I just learned why bigger programs have stayed away from him for the most part. Turns out he's more than just a super intense guy who tends to bit abrasive at times. Programs are scared sh**less of him because apparently the dude's a psychopath. I just caught a glimpse of this for the first time today as I don't recall this making the rounds nationally at the time, but here's Marshall during an exhibition game no less from this past summer. Wait'll you get a load of him here. Guy's a maniac.

Outside of Stevens and Donovan Archie is probably as good of a hire as we could've made. Marshall is nut but a great coach nonetheless. Bennett is a solid coach but his offense will never attract 5 star recruits. Alford just can't coach and I honestly think Archie is a better coach than Sean Miller. The only question is recruiting. If he can recruit anywhere near his brother's level we'll be a title contender in a few years.

Haha how am I living in the past? I wanted and we got the best young coach out there. Archie will grab the best recruits available regardless of where they are from, but if you can't even recruit your state well how in the world could you recruit nationally? That's why I put emphasis on the in state talent that comes out of Indiana.
UK is the best program currently in CBB. I'm not delusional I get that. All I'm saying is that now that IU finally has the right guy in place they will be right there with you in a few years.
I'm not here to fight with you, I've said what I wanted to say. I fired hard on Kansas and Xavier so I'm going back to watching. I'll be back in a few years to tell you all I told you so when IU is in the final four.
Your Mama is calling you. Time for you to go to the basement.

Out of all the coaches Indiana could have hired, Archie Miller is one of them.

Seriously, Miller was as good as Indiana could've done.

They have nowhere to go but up.

That's true, but NOTHING about Miller screams that he'll bring IU back to "elite status".

He'll probably have them top 25, but being a talked about contender each year? I really don't know

Its been long discussed on this board, but I believe the top front runners in ppls minds are Billy D, Brad Stevens, some like Sean Miller(not me), K.P could take over and run the ship. The homerun hire would be Brad Stevens though
LOL. Brad would never end up at UK, not in a million years: keep dreaming.

Hasn't Billy D rejected UK multiple times already? What makes you guys think it wouldn't happen again, and don't you have to have some pride at some point?

Let's see : IU has made three horrible hires since they fired Knight (and Knight was thru in 93) and this new hire is nowhere near a home run hire

Keep talking

Tubby and BCG were horrible hires, as was Eddie Sutton. Pitino was a gamble, a "non-home run hire" if you will" (which paid off): he came from lowly Providence, remember? Calipari had the resume, but he also had an NCAA rap sheet: I'm not down with rolling the dice on guys like that, but whatever floats your boat.

If you are given IU crap for swinging and missing on Brad and Billy D, you are the pot calling the kettle black.

Actually, Rick Pitino was hired by Kentucky in 1989 on the heels of winning 52 games as head coach of the New York Knicks after 2 seasons in the NBA, which came on the heels of a successful stint as head coach at Providence, a tenure which culminated in a run to the school's first, and to this date, only final 4 appearance in school history in 1987. Remember? The same same year the Hoosiers last won a natty...30 yrs ago.

Pitino was not considered a gamble. Quite the contrary in fact. The gamble that was made was the one taken by Pitino in taking the Kentucky job at a time when the program had just been slapped with major unprecedented NCAA sanctions. Pitino was absolutely and completely unanimously considered a home run hire by UK at the time.

Rick Pitino is not a comparable hire. At All.

How am I angry? Interesting theory. Wrong, but interesting.

Going to a FF at a mid-major and getting his butt spanked by Jordan in the playoffs wasn't a guarantee that Pitino would be an elite coach at UK. UK made an educated gamble and it worked out: it is ok to admit that. This was the point I was making, not a comparison of Archie to Pitino. Frank Vogel won 50 games at the Pacers: is he a 100% lock to be an elite coach at UK?

Then you're a dope. I'm no huge Tubby guy, but he already had a Kentucky and Pitino connection, along with getting to the Sweet 16 in each of the previous seasons...

And because Sutton failed at UK....apparently you didn't see his history at Arkansas

But, like typical IU fans...you're a dope

wtf? You have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

Tubby Smith won a national title, 5 conference titles, and went to the elite 8 FOUR times. You would build a statue for that right now. Maybe rename the state. You suck.

Pitino was not a gamble, he was coming back from the Knicks and sought UK out. HE wanted this job, something Indiana could never accomplish. A top coach wanting to coach there.

Cal had no wrap sheet at all. He was never implicated in anything, and since Cal was drug through the mud by idiots like you, here's the real story.

Indiana has been on probation
UNC was busted for institutional cheating at a high level
Louisville was paying recruits and parents with hookers and sex
Syracuse had a pedo scandal

Kentucky? Cal? Clean.

Deal with it and stfu. If you want to talk over here with your big brother, you need to know facts. You just hired a risk and as a once proud program, you're a damn joke. And for the record, Donovan was never interested in IU. It just made you feel good.

Seems like I saw Tubby wearing a title ring it's different than Creans ring for winning the sweet 16 .

Pitino was a "non-home run hire"?

Are you insane? He was coaching the friggin' New York Knicks before he came to UK, and winning 52 games doing so (more than doubling their win total in 2 years). There was probably no hotter name in all of coaching at the time. UK lucked out because Pitino's egomania (of the type that killed him when he went back to the NBA) was causing huge conflicts with Knicks' front office people.

Pitino had spent a whopping 2 years at Providence, and managed to take them from never finishing better than next to last in the Big East for 6 straight years to a FF. Getting Pitino was like signing the #1 overall recruit in the country. Never a guarantee with that, but every reason to expect great things. Which, in this case, UK got.

Just because you're an NBA coach doesn't mean you're a home run hire. I mean Quinn Snyder is the HC of the Jazz. Would he of been a home run hire for IU?

Most of you UK fans are nuts. IU is a better job than UK. All thing are the same except there's always a ton of great high school talent that comes out of Indiana where there is very little that comes out of Kentucky. IU finally has a coach now that kids will want to play for. Give Archie a few years and IU will be one of the top teams year in and year out. The problem with IU the last 25 years wasn't IU...it was the administration making bad hires. This time though they got it right, and Indiana will be back where they belong in the next two or three years.

Haha. A better job? Get real. You have tons of NBA talent knocking down your door at Indiana?

And your statement of "IU finally has a coach that kids will wwnt to play for" is based on what other than the hopes of a fan?

It's a good hire for you but your program has faded so much over thirty years.

Oh, and your statement about in-state talent is stupid in comparison as well. You think Kansas has a ton of in-state talent? Nope. But Kentucky, UNC and Duke are so superior to Indiana in every way. You're old news. Honest adults that are in their early to mid 30s can't even remember a time when you were successful. You've been to two Elite 8s in three decades. We've been to six since 2010.

I know basically nothing about him but I've always gotten a pre-UK BCG vibe from him. I could be way off on that but there's something about him that reminds me of Gillispie.

And I am absolutely shocked Donovan is not headed to Bloomington! I can't believe he wasn't beating their ADs door down trying to get that job. I thought for sure he'd want to get away from that scrub Westbrook and coach all of that unbelievable talent at IU. I'm sure he will regret it for the rest of his life lol.
Well, BCG was a raging idiot and a drunk. I don't think Miller is either. About the best IU could do.

Jesus, I'd hope you'd be able to make a Final Four again. Even Butler has went more than Indiana has since the 80s. You have Gonzaga, Oregon & possibly South Carolina getting as many Final Fours as Indiana has since 1987.

Ok I'll play....
How many title's? How many final fours, elite 8's did Crean reach in 9 years? It's been 30 years! Yes that's right 30 years since IU has been relevant. Poor IU, keep dreaming guys...
