We"ll have 2 experienced centers, one experienced forward, one 5 star forward backup, 3 experienced guards, and one backup guard with very little experience. We are lacking depth at the guard position. That needs to be priority one.

Obviously the key piece to this puzzle is the status of both ERod, and if Mallegni stays. IF not then we certainly need to fill another 3/4 type spot, but we certainly need at least one experienced combo guard. As I've posted "my kingdom for another Molly Davis" at least. Its possible that KJ stays, and I doubt Jan would run her, but I'd put no hope she'll ever play any significant time.

I would also assume that Kennise Johnson is moving on as well. (not that we need another open scholarship)
You might think but i'd doubt it, unless Jan runs her, and I don't see that happening. I mean could she really portal? To where? She'll be a 4th year player who's never played a significant minute in a game. With all the players that hit the portal, I can't imagine a team taking her on. Certainly not a D1 team.

Take the best available talent we can get no matter the position. There is plenty of room to figure it out after that

We have an all-Big center, third team PG. Why recruit those position? Deal and Stremlow are solid 2 guards. McKenna and Journey are a solid PF duo and you can sub Mallegni. We really need two SF's. A best available, shot gun approach could upset players on the team and impact Iowa's culture

Who is backing up all 3 guard positions?

We need another point guard, Chit Chat is playing way too many minutes. I think all those minutes contributed to her shooting slump at the end of the regular season

Iowa could very well have 1 recruit coming in and a roster returning of 8 or 9. We need at least 3 or 4 from the portal. Injuries happen every year. Some for a game or two, some for the season. Unknowns are Rodriguez, Levin, Johnson, Mallegni if they return. Then we have 4 seniors leaving . Jan has to be very active in the portal. We need 2 starters to come in and 2 solid backups to come in.

Doubt she will leave Nebraska. It will be interesting who does enter the portal. I know there is a lot of discussion about tampering in college sports. I wonder if it could go the other way, where a player's family, ex-coach, or agent contacts a school inquiring about their interested in a player. If a school said we would be very interested once they enter the portal. Is that tampering?

We need 2 starters and 2 solid backups? Are Addie, Journey, and McKenna going to be bench cheerleaders?

Assuming most of the team returns, I really like our depth. I agree with others that we should probably add a point guard in the portal, but more as a backup to Chit Chat. We really hit the jackpot with her. That said, injuries happen, and you can never have too much depth at that position. There’s a reason Lisa Bluder went out and got Molly Davis even when she had Caitlin Clark.
While I agree we need a backup pt guard who wants to transfer from a place where you’re probably starting to being a 6-8 minute a game backup?

Just because they’re a backup pg doesn’t mean they couldn’t still play significant minutes. Molly Davis was starting Clark’s senior year until she was injured. Just need a reliable ball handler that can run the offense if needed.

Those type of players are out there but you would probably have to scout mid-majors or a DII / JC diamond. Just my opinion, but there are some very good mid-major and lower division guards who were under recruited out of high school but really blossomed in college. Jensen has pretty good radar for character and culture fit (Rodriguez tbd) to sift out the right player.

Why would they do that? They have plenty to do, prepping for the tourney, recruiting and the portal.
That’s why they might be there. Someone was previously hoping we could snag the Murray St PG, a Waterloo native, to backup Chat. Note: she’s not in the portal and no idea if she intends to enter. We played against her and the rest of her team last year in the first round.

Interesting! She would be a senior next year and might be worth a look, she could definitely play in the BIG, but not a tall player by any means.
