Big lose for the clones with Castillo hitting the portal

Very interesting. I hadn’t seen him on any lists yet. Would be a big loss for sure.

i think he's small. 149 imo. i wouldn't be high on him as a 157.

i'd imagine intermat only has him there b/c he wrestled that weight all season.
Makes sense. Thanks! I still feel like he’s worth chasing if he has interest in Iowa. Any idea where he is looking?

Idk if most people realize it but Zepeda and Eise both graduated from Gilroy HS in CA. Wonder if they will be headed to the same place. Their former teammate Moses Mendoza is going to Michigan.

UNC or ISU?
My guess is them are the top 2. Speculation at each school as to whom will be coaching him. Ramos or metcalf. I personally feel it’s between Ramos and mark hall as to our next assistant. Nod to Ramos with him having the longevity with experience. I would be happy with either one. We got enough metcalf style with our current head and top assistant. My bets on garvin to ISU and Ramos to Iowa without Garvin.

Woah… that’s a huge loss. Castillo is a career 125 and has major upside. It’ll be great to see him back at his home state and make ASU competitive again. Would be great for the sport.
I wonder if he’d actually end up there with Rylan Seacrist coming in who will also be a career 125er. Was #1 all year at 113 won Ironman. Very talented but obviously small wrestling 113 as a senior.

SIAP - List from Cradle Zone (Oklahoma wrestling reporter I believe) on X. Would be nice if he is right.
I would be floored if Norman goes to PSU. This is just some yahoo thinking "their 174 is graduating so they'll just get the best 174 in the portal", but why? The internal candidates for 174 are Henckel and possibly Duke if he doesn't redshirt. Norman is good, don't get me wrong, but is he a clear improvement? Especially for a team that is not exactly desperate for every last NCAA point? They only way he comes is if he does it like Welsh where he reaches out and says he wants to be in the room and comes with no guarantee of a starting spot, but Welsh was a returning finalist with only Ryder in his path. Norman is both not that good and has better competition for the starting spot.

Here is the Illinois guy’s thoughts again:

He says Michigan is the leader for Knox, Iowa for Garvin, ISU for Norman.

Remember Swaw said Metcalf to Iowa as well. Cradlezone is a HS student. Swaw son wrestles at IL and he does commentary for them. I can tell you many things that have been said aren't true. This is the im gonna throw stuff against the wall method and if something sticks people will think I know things. Iowa has a few holes to fill and they will get filled. Many here will complain regardless and have a better plan and the BS will start. So have fun guessing names until then

I hear ya loud and clear. Not putting much stock into anything being posted by anyone. Just shooting the sh it on here because that’s what people do on message boards.

Nothing against Ramos - he was a great Hawk and seems to be a very good coach- but we have enough Iowa guys on the coaching staff. I’d like to see some outside influence with a little more funk/scrambling.

This post seems to insinuate that we may not be in line to get the top guys, which would suck. Either way, whatever happens will happen. Fingers crossed on a 133 and a 165.

I prefer to think it means we will get Crookham but everyone will complain about his injuries. I do think it means David Carr won’t be our next coach. 😂

I’m not complaining one bit as it’s still early, but I do hope people have realistic expectations for this portal class.

165 is a big need but there’s only 1 great option right now and there has been scuttlebutt for years that he wasn’t big on Iowa.

133 has some good options but lots of people need a 133, plus the weight class is an absolute bear so throwing a ton of money at it may not make sense from an ROI standpoint.

157 is a fairly weak class portal wise too. There is an argument that as of now none of the options are better than what we currently have (Willie and Corby both agree Zepeda isn’t a 157).

All of this to say, a LOT could change still but most would be wise to temper the expectations.

I don't disagree with this assessment, but I believe that jay borchel would bring that to the staff as a former Iowa guy (and I believe that you could successfully roll a snowball across the floor of hell with better success than bringing Jay back)

I don’t get that out of his message at all.

I have no doubt Iowa will be a big portal player, just as they have always been. $$$ talks. Not to everyone, but it does talk.

I thought Meza was a pretty big recruit for them also and those two were going to be the future of their lightweights.

Didn’t he just roast TnT on social media? Sure wouldn’t want to work under them.

You think the answer is a guy who’s been selling medical equipment for over 10 years?

If memory serves Welsh committed to Penn State and like the next day Ryder's name was in the portal. With the potential 48-hour gap between when a student athlete enters their name in and when the school has to formally submit the name into the portal, any of the following things were possible 1) the two events happened at the same time 2) Ryder told Penn State he was entering and then they accepted the commitment from Welsh or 3) Welsh committed and then Ryder entered the portal. I don't think anyone outside of Penn State's athletic department would be able to know for certain the actual order of the events.

With that 48-hour window in mind, it won't shock me if we see a few more names in the portal today...guys that submitted their stuff on 4/1 but the school wanted a chance to talk them back off the ledge.

I just don't understand the love for Metcalf the coach. ISU has accomplished nothing since he has been there until this year. This year's team was bought and not developed.

That's fair. Some of subscribe to the theory that being the "Iowa" coach has many advantages to be more successful than other places- even at a history rich ISU. If David Taylor had accepted the ISU job- is he as succesful? I dont think so. He would make noise in Ames but not at the loud pace he could in Stillwater.

So I believe its fair to ask if ISU is holding Brent back?

All that being said- if Carr is coming with- that's the part that swings it for me. In an assistant role or with HWC he would be priceless in the intangibles he would bring to the table.
