Pikeill at Stony Brook.

Amen to this. That's why I thought Cluess would be a disaster here. He just like EJ never emphasized defense. It's a foreign language to both of them, whereas Pikiell stresses tough man to man defense with no switching and trapping. I like that.

Hold on a minute. Are you telling me that a coach is allowed to modify his offensive system year to year to match the personnel on the team, and not just pound a square peg into a round hole? That is crazy!

I love what I read in the article about the defensive philosophy. Build a solid staff, get the fundamentals and defense turned around, and better talent will come. Very optimistic foe the future!

Agree, if a coach wins against comparable talent at the Juco, D3, D2 level he should be able to win against comparable talent at the B1G level. Of course, it's all about getting the players. It's the same as it has always been in college basketball.............Recruiting.

But Stony Brook also recruits guys to play in that conference. Rutgers -- in theory, anyway -- should be recruiting an entirely different kind of player. So I don't really care about how "silly" the stats might be to some.

Agreed. I only coach youth church league basketball but I bet I could coach Kentucky to wins over most America East teams. But ask me to coach that Kentucky team vs Indiana and we would have been blown out.

I clicked on one of the articles on the same page as the APP article linked above. It was about the usual interview with Bob Hurley (the father, I believe) about RU's new hire. It concluded with an interesting suggestion, given the lateness of the recruiting season at this point:

"“If I’m him I watch every kid that’s graduating with a year of eligibility (left), (like) Hawaii with three juniors who are all good players. They can’t play in the (NCAA) Tournament next year (due to NCAA sanctions). If I’m a coach in college right now, maybe last name Hurley or maybe the guy here, you’ve got to do this and figure it out. Maybe those guys could make your roster better . . . and then you get the scholarship back to build for the future.”

The "him" and "guy here" are references to Pikiell, in the context of the overall article. Hawaii knocked off Cal in the first round last week. Is Hurley correct in inferring that their three juniors, each with a year of eligibility remaining, would be eligible to play right away if they transferred because Hawaii will be on probation next year or is just because they are graduating this year? We've had some luck with graduate students in football and it may be a help in creating some depth next season in basketball.

Hopefully he'll be coaching a roster full of B1G guys. It would be the first time in a long time. I mean the root of the problems at RU is that our talent hasn't been even close to our competition for a good long while.
