Still say Thornwell is the POY..
So you would rather have Thornwell then Monk if you are a coach ? At least thats how I think of these awards - right now at this moment given what the said player has achieved THIS SEASON who would you most like to have play for you/your team? Monk is the best player in the SEC and IMO top 3 in the country along with Swanigan and Hart . Listen ,Thornwell is the 2nd best player in the league with Fraiser 3rd , Bam 4th and Maten 5th IMO but he is not better then Monk .

It's not an award on who you would most want to play on your team. It's an award about who had the best season. There can be a debate made for either player. Both are very deserving.

I'll bet the ten man rotation made up of the first and second team all-SEC players against any other conference, just saying.....

As a South Carolina fan the way I looked at it (right or wrong) was like this

Without Monk, UK is still an extremely good team headed to a dang good seed in the NCAA tourney.

Without Thornwell, South Carolina doesn't make the NCAA tourney and is staring at 14 wins and 12th place in the SEC.

Thronwell had nice numbers, solid all around but for a third place team guy to win something like that. A: there cant be anyone close to him number wise and B: his numbers have to be off the charts. Monk scored enough and B Thornwells numbers werent mind blowing.

Thornwell is a heck of a defensive player though and I think the coaches recognized that. He was tough as nails defensively- and often would end up on guys 3 inches taller (because some of our other players would get lost) - and he held his own all year.

He was the one player on our team that opposing coaches talked about when it came to defense.

So I think in this case, the coaches recognized that defensive effort, not to mention his scoring numbers were right there with Monk.

He clearly isn't as talented as Monk but he does give it 100% every game on offense and defense.

I don't think the award. should necessarily go to a player from the best team. I think Monk is deserving but Thornwell's did more things such as rebounding and more assists, he was also a better defensive player. Monk will be a much better pro and has much more upside. I know many think we are picked on and conspired against but Monk did benefit from our national exposure.

It will be interesting to see how the SEC coaches vote. I love Monk and he may very well be the most talented guard ever at UK.

Which is why Monk should be Player of the Year.

If the award was solely based on offense,, sure Monk would have been a run away winner,, lol.. Outside of offense that's about his game.. I'm not bitching that the AP gave it to him but if I was on the voting panel,, I'd picked Thornwell..

No they wouldn't. Without Monk this team would be lucky to have made the NCAA Tourney. Without his shooting and scoring I shudder to think about life without him.

best players play defense, rebound, help their teams win on both ends of the court. I saw Thornwell guard Maten from UGA, Saiz from Ole Miss, and whoever the coaches needed him to. Better to have the respect of the coaches than the simple minded press

Who else could they chose, you have a few good players but Monk is the only great player in the league.

I will would have to agree with Thorwell as POY. He should get some consideration as AA, but he won't.
Exactly, that I why hate the anti UK conspiracies. Had he put up these numbers at UK, duke, unc he would have been an all-american

Also Fox/Monk first team and Bam second team. Unlike the SEC teams there are only 5 players on each team so IMO it is more valid. The having 7 players on each team is sorta cheating .

In case y'all didn't know, the AP will always be UK biased because of the number of media outlets that cover UK throughout the state. The Coaches awards are closer to reality, the AP awards are to appease UK's fanbase. Always been that way, and I would imagine, it always will be.

Edit: I'm sure most of y'all already knew this.

I think you got it mixed up............coaches vote for players they have seen up close and who go all out on both ends of the floor cause that's what every coach wants in a player. AP poll is a popularity contest by far. Like one poster said..........without Monk, UK makes the tourney easily. Without Thornwell, SC might have a shot at the NIT at best.

21 ppg as a freshman on a good team should be poy , put Thornwell on UK in place of Monk and we are not as good . The right player won and the coaches vote is a popularity contest . They recruit against each other and resort to petty bs .

Monk played a better OOC schedule than Thornwell did but make sure not to factor that in , South Carolina is not a super bowl to a single sec team . Meanwhile the entire conference circles UK on their schedule and plays harder than they will all year . Since Monk is our best player he gets the most attention in the Super Bowls while Thornwell doesn't see that kind of intensity when playing against opponents.

If he didn't win it we were going to leave the SEC. This woulda started some crap.

This would have been the start of us feuding with our own league.
