Anyone else nervous about our next class?

The combination of a lack of elite guards, in this next class, and the fact that we are going to lose all of our guards to the draft has me worried. We absolutely have to sign one of Young, or Green. If we dont land Diallo, who will play the 2? Our frontline should still be fairly solid, with Humphries, Wynyard, SKJ, and probably Gabriel back. Someone talk some sense into me.

I am concerned. The reasons are:
1) it is a weak class, especially at PG
2) between seniors and guys leaving early, we likely will have the biggest void we ever had with likely 0 returning guards
3) I think it is pretty optimistic to think all 4 of those bigs you listed return. If that happens that is not a good sign for this season, meaning that only Bam & Willis played well out of the non-guards
4) Duke is "all-in" on Cal's OAD recruiting philosophy, and making an impact in who we get

Humphries is a legit 7'0 with a big frame, and the scouts liked him a year ago, and reports from those who should know (i.e. Poythress) are that he has improved significantly. I think there is a good chance he leaves.
I also think there is a good chance (>50%) that Gabriel leaves too. So we very well could be looking at a team of SKJ, Wynyard, walk-ons, and freshmen.

Just one of those reasons is enough to cause a little concern, but the combination of all of them is quite concerning. I think it is very possible we have a roster something like this next year:
SKJ, Wynyard, Bamba, Washington, Richards, Green, Walker, Petty, & some in-state 3* guard

There's a long ways to go. I never get nervous about next year when this season hasn't started yet. It's like worrying about who's leaving prior to them playing a game. Ask this same question at the end of the spring signing period.

Not sure why people expect Gabriel and SKJ back. Once scouts see them play and work out at the combine, no chance they don't jump. Don't get your hopes up.
LOL I would give the chance of both going pro a 5% chance . SKJ is almost a lock as a 2 year player . Gabriel could so the way of a lyles and be a top lotto pick after this year or he could play 3 years like WCS. Bam and the 3 guards will be gone but beyond that it is iffy.

As far as recruiting we will get Bamba , Diallo and Young almost for sure IMO if I had to bet . Petty and Washington also seem very gettable . Then guys like Richards and others could come aboard as well as we will sign 7-8 . I wish Ayton were more likely eligible as he wants to go to UK it sounds like but Cal is keeping his distance .

If both of those guys go pro. Meaning that all 5 scholarship freshman were good enough to go pro. Something I don't think has ever happened under Cal then we had a hell of a year. Too much talk about Hump improving (now we could lose him if the talk is true) for SKJ to shine enough to be drafted.
So what if the class is weak. They're are graduate transfers or a juco now to bring in maybe a little experience on the perimeter as it chances are we bring 3 or 4 inside guys back.

It makes sense s weak class means a weak draft. So if a guy is borderline first round in a strong draft like next year's should be then it makes sense to come back for a borderline soph or jr and go first round in a weak draft.

Truth is with one and done players being the way most of the big boys are going and even Kansas is expecting their one and done to be the man this year. So a weak 18 class effects everyone especially Duke. Who will probably see a mass exodus for the first time. With three of their Fresh pretty much first round locks and Bolden a possibility. They may be losing more production than even us. So we will see if K can win with a super young team next year.

We will get Young. It feels to much like one of those situations where we know we got him but both sides are just going through the motions of the recruiting process. Even his so called not going to prep school was accompanied by a statement about spending his last year at home. Doesn't sound like a guy who plans on staying close to home for college. As for the wings. Well worst case scenario is Petty who os ours if we want him. Washington to looks good enough to me that if we land Washington and Petty both guys shoot really well. To go with a lights out shooting point. U add a shot blocking beast like Bamba or a freak stretch 4 like Ayton we are going to be really good. If all we add inside to go with Hump and SKJ is another solid shot blocker then we are still going to be solid. Worst case scenario to me if we add all that perimeter scoring to a solid shot blocker and inside scorer is a 2011 type season. No way we get a 2013 type year to many guys that can score the ball. Plus 13 probably ends a little different if Noel doesn't go down.

Look, I'm not saying it will for sure happen. I'm just saying to EXPECT them to be back is wishful thinking. We've expected multiple players back that ended up jumping early.

Gabriel and SKJ (more Gabriel) have all of the tools to be one and done. It's going to be even more difficult to keep our borderline first rounders due to the new rules allowing them to get more feedback, which I am a fan of.

When Cal is in charge of recruiting for Kentucky, i never worry anymore. Don't get it twisted. Cal will have a year of missing on a few recruits and not have a Cal like roster to work with. We all know it will happen sometime in the future. When that happens, Cal will come back the next year with a mega class and the talent that wasn't good enough to go pro will come back and be a help with the next talented recruiting class. Even with a non Cal like recruiting class, odds are we will still be talented enough to make the Ncaa tourney. The other day i thought i heard the other day that Bam is really not 6'10 and really is 6'7? Surely this is wrong? I know schools lie about their guys height all the time, but surely the kid is taller than 6'7? I know with Bam's hops and talent, it really won't matter too much and the kid will produce at the college level.

I haven't heard anything that leads me to think he will be at UK, but I haven't heard a whole lot in general.

I know Nova would love to pair him with Walker.

Do you think Samuels' verbal may push Lonnie somewhere else? Or is it a non-factor?

That kid in the same backcourt as Walker would be wanted at every school in the country. You have to believe now that Nova and their coach has a title to work with, it's time for their recruiting to be even better than before. Walker is one of my favorite recruits in the class. With his size and shooting touch, it's a lock for that kid to be a big time college basketball player his freshman year of college basketball.

Id say it would be a big surprise if both Gabriel and Humphries are good enough to go in the first round in such a good draft. There is only so much playing time, and Gabriel and Humphries do not appear to be expected starters. Plus they have flaws they need to show they can improve (Gabriel's offense and Humphries' defense). They may decide they don't care and go in the second round, but that's still unlikely.

This is true!

I would like him to end up at UK, I know he'd get promoted well and Cal would put him in good situations to succeed.

Cuse would probably be the worst situation just because of how they play.

I may have heard somewhere where dad is encouraging him to look at a lot of different schools.

I think it's still early with him.

We have now seen 7 years of #1 or #2 Recruiting classes since Coach Cal arrived in 2009-2010. That is his strength in Coaching and that is one area that we shouldn't worry about with Coach Cal as Head Coach at Kentucky. We will always have a Top 3 Recruiting Class as long as Coach Cal is here at Kentucky. That is the one reason he knew coming to Kentucky after leaving Memphis would be stronger and that would be his recruiting at UK. He knew recruiting would be so much better for him at UK. That is the one area that I don't worry about with Coach Cal and that is his Recruiting Skills.

I haven't read all the post in this thread so, sorry if someone already said this...as long as Calipari is the coach at UK, I'm not worried about recruiting. Now, if I was a UL BB fan (spit) then I would be worried.

I would be more worried about 2018. 2018 looks to be an unusually weak class, so I would hope to see us add several guys this year who are multi-year types next year.

Otherwise, 2018 is going to turn out to be another 2016 type year where experienced Jr/Sr laden teams dominate.

I think the key for 2017 is if we see a couple guys like SKJ and Gabriel come back for a second year.

I'll worry about the next class come April. For now, I'm patiently waiting to see this current class tear it up.

All you people saying "lets focus on this year first" makes me smh. Do you not want to have another solid team the year after? Sure this year should be one for the memories but, you always have to prepare for the future. Call me a pessimist, but I could see us struggling big time if we miss out on, any of Young, Walker, Diallo, or Bamba( and hes a heavy Duke lean)

Some posters can't think about more than one thing at a time, and that's often reflected in the quality of their contributions to the board.

I am not worried, because I expect us to struggle in 2018. And by struggle I mean something like 2013 or 2016. If SKJ and Gabriel come back, it likely means we did not win #9. As noted, that class of guards doesn't blow anyone away at this point.

Just try and find a year, except 2013 when our PG transfer disappeared, when Cal didn't fill the bill for our team. That should make you feel all warm and cuddly inside.

Breaking News!!! Some people are still worried about recruiting under John Calipari at Kentucky 8 years later!!! I think they make medication for that, TBH.

I'm on the Nova board and a huge Nova fan.

We're not recruiting Quade Green even though he's listing us. Not happening.

We've got a kid visiting in September named Daryll Morsell. Late rising top 60 kid from Baltimore.

It's likely there's 1 scholly left for a guard and Morsell could take it before Walker visits.

Word on the grape vine is we're leaning towards Morsell and that Walker isn't coming to Nova.

Take it for what it's worth.

Lol at Bamba being a Duke lean. Someone isn't paying attention. I think a lot of people have the wrong idea on where UK sits with him, Knox, and Walker. Could be some nice surprises in this class.
