Most of these responses came in as I was at the dealership buying one.
Got a 2015 with 7700 miles. It was a corporate fleet vehicle so somebody else took the initial depreciation hit for me and I got a car that's barely been used.
Unlike CoolMan, I actually like the idea of electrics. I especially like the idea of a Tesla, but not the price.
The VW has a 1.4L Turbo engine coupled with the electric motor. It has a lot more pep than you'd expect. You expect a lot of torque from a stop, but this thing will really go at highway speeds and can accelerate to pass.
VW is discontinuing this model, and is gearing up for a larger focus on hybrids and pure electric.
So far I'm OK with it ... ask me again in 5-6 years if it was a good idea. Getting about 43 mpg in the first day and half of ownership. The 2.5 hour drive from the dealership to home used a about 1/8th of a tank.
I bought a used Honda Civic Hybrid and enjoyed the great mileage but what will you do when your rechargeable batteries need replaced? It was going to cost me several thousands to get them replaced into an aging vehicle w/100k+ miles. As mine approached that point I sold it at about 7 years old and 107k miles and was thrilled to get rid of it. I had trouble finding who/how/where I was going to get a reasonable deal on new or refurbished rechargeable batteries and was relieved that I didn't have to deal with it. I assumed that it would be an issue going forward as every rechargeable battery (laptops, cordless tools, etc.) I'd ever had had gone bad at some point. Approx. 40% of that car's horsepower came from the electric motors/battery.
