Now that we are perceived nationally as a " decaying program", thanks in a large part to Riley, we won't seem as crazy as we did for firing a perennial 9 win coach. Riley is not very big shoes to fill. It was interesting it still referred to us as a heavy weight. That could only relate to our resources I would think.Nice article! I agre that this job is very attractive to a number of big time coaching prospects, especially if we could tone down the crazy a little.

I agree with all of this. My somewhat pointless point was that the writer describes us as a decaying program and then a heavyweight in the same article. A bit of a mixed message, otherwise a good positive articleWe are a heavy weight. Everything is in place to win big here and there are not many programs (Top 15-20) as appealing to potential coaches as Nebraska. A poor 2017 season does not change that.

It is a contradiction but it makes sense. From a monetary and tradition stand point we are heavy weights. However our play on the field and fan expectations are decaying. At least for me they are. Its funny now when I look back at the Bo years and think to myself I wasn't satisfied then. I look at the current state of NU football and think man I wish we were winning 9 or 10 a year. Its the same way I felt transitioning from Frank to BC. Bob and Tom raised the bar to a ridiculous level. And it was up there for so long that NU football being good to great was a certainty for me. I never thought I would find a silver lining in the tenure of BC or MR. But they've shown us how good we had it. And they helped lower the bar enough for a coach with more upside hopefully to come in and be given a chance to be successful. I think more fans, Alumni and boosters understand that we have a bit of a climb ahead of us. The truth is we have for years. I hope the next coach is ready for the challenge and that the fans expectations remain reasonable.OK. Does seem like a contradiction.
