Sounds made up. It's rare to ever have all those ligaments damaged at the same time. And he isn't walking off on his own power if all of those were damaged.

But just watching a few hours of NFL today and see a large number of lineman wearing them I would venture to say the well payed orthopedic docs that advise those teams might know more than you or me.
