Was Ava in foul trouble? Crooks gives her fits.

Hard to know what transpired without seeing the game. Did Iowa double team or play straight up, Don’t know. Audi is a force down low that we do know. Audi with 25 and 8 pretty much hit her exact season average in points and rebounds from last season.

Wow! Those are close to CC type of #s against a ~Top 20 team. That's an intital great sign. I say this because I''m worried about Dani's 3-pt shooting against Top 50/25 teams. Last year she was down around Kylie's %. This is only one game but a positive in the right direction. 42% from 3 is close Chit-Chat on 3s. Hopefully she keeps this up.

McW is as advertised if not better. Never expected those #s until the end of the season, not her initial game. You'd think we were playing a creampuff with that stat line.

The one weak spot which we all knew could be a potential thorn in our side is defense. 2 guards with 20+ pts says some work is needed in this area yet. I was worried about this because Whiting's defensive stats did not equate to Kylie. Iirc, Whiting was closer to McCabe than Kylie in D stats on Torvik.

However, it sounds like McW is not far behind Hannah in D but her offense looks like it could make up for it. 19 pts and 50% on 3s that's going to be a killer to defend along with Heiden, Dani and Chit-Chat. We really need the 3 spot player to zero in on lock down D and we're going places.

This is a great sign we make it past the R32 and E8 is not out of the possibility. We need that 3 spot to get closer to Kylie than McCabe on D and E8 is looking better.

Realize this is only one game but the markers are there to be better than last year plus some.

EDIT: Just noticed Whiting came off the bench from another post. Expected Strem would take the bench (we know her) and we'd find out what Whiting had from the opening tip. However, I have no idea who started in that 3 spot between Journey, Whiting & Strem. Maybe Journey got a start to see how she handles it? Most likely Strem and Whiting is a known there, while Journey is taking a new position/role from last year.

Strem started at the 3. That is an insane stat line from Dani. Oklahoma State has built a really nice roster. McGill is a damn good player. Much like Ava is going to open things up for Iowa’s perimeter players Audi is going to do the same for OSU.

What were Carnegie's stats vs Virginia in last season's NCAA first round game? I was actually in Carver for that game but certainly wasn't paying attention to her play then.

So it seems the only remaining question is "Can they play some defense?" because it doesn't look like scoring is going to be a problem.

BTW, I accidentally came across Anon's X account while browsing the scrimmage comments. Total psycho that guy.

I was too and don't remember noticing her. I guess everyone can have an off day. Per the box score, she played 43 minutes, shot 3-13 from the field, 0-7 on 3-pointers and 2-2 from the line for 8 total points.

Not sure what Georgia ran for an offense last year but I’m hoping Iowa’s free flowing offense Dani’s her game. It appears to be love at first sight. Let’s hope that, or something close, continues. Also I’m very pleasantly surprised the McKenna appears ready to go. I thought it might take some time. Very positive start for the Hawkeyes. It’s interesting how already we are mentioning Kylie when last year many wanted her off the floor 🤓

Kylie was an excellent defender, but she was brutal at the offensive end. It would take her 5 or 6 games to put up stats like Dani did in this one and that's not an exaggeration.

13 rebounds from our 2 guard. Is that good?

Just a reminder that our 2 guard from last year averaged 1.5 rebounds and 5 ppg on 33% from the field in conference play.

We'll see how things go. but I won't be surprised to see MW ready to fill a major role. She played against the highest level of competition, games against top 5 level teams nationally. Watching some of her high school games they didn't really run much offense for her, but she still got hers. She had major USA national team experience, even was MVP I believe' While she'll basically playing a different position at Iowa, she appears to have the skills to be the perfect stretch 4 to play opposite Ava.

So you're suggesting that this 5 star might just pan out? 🤔

Yes, I'll admit that I was one who was very optimistic about Deal coming to Iowa. While I still would not doubt she'll be a good player, it became apparent as the year went on that her being almost two years older in high school ,and her having no USA national team experience were major differences in comparing her to MW. If you go back and look at most of the top players in the NCAA, and then WNBA draft , ALL had multiple years of experience as national team members. Clark, Bueckers, Boston, Reece for the USA, and Cardosa for Brazil. MW is certainly one of the most decorated of the current group to enter college after producing in international competition.

That’s something the needs to badly fix. How many of the 4 were dumb fouls?
Fouling against Audi Crooks in a scrimmage isn't a good measure of how the season will go. We don't know whether the team used defensive schemes to protect Ava. We don't know when she made the fouls (early or late), or whether they were all made while guarding Crooks. I am not worried about four fouls in an October scrimmage against an otherworldly offensive player. UCONN will tell us much more about Ava's ability to stay out of foul trouble this season.

The headline here is Woliczko.
first college game
new coaches
new system
new teammates
vs. a ranked team

Replacing Stuelke’s production was a major concern …..not so much?
I don't think anyone was concerned about the offensive side of the ball as that was never Hannah's strength. I think everyone knew coming in that McKenna is already a more dynamic offensive player. So is Journey for that matter.

There was and still is a concern on the defensive side where Hannah drew the toughest assignments down low. That can't really be Ava because she struggles with fouls and needs to stay on the floor.

Our guard court was extremely weak last year and basically kept us out of the sweet 16. Feurbach couldn't throw it in the ocean all year which just makes it really hard to run any kind of offense. Then throw in Stremlow having a bad shooting game as well. This team is so much more athletic and balanced. Can score from all 5 positions and much more athletic. Crooks is going to score 25 against almost everyone. She's a beast. Our athleticism means our defense should come around soon.
