These have been special years under Cal. Enjoy them while we can. His kind of success will be extremely difficult to maintain after he leaves. . No UK coach has attracted such extremely top shelf talent. He's the "Pied Piper" of top shelf players. Any UK fan who wants another coach is out of touch with realty.

WHICH 5*s DO YOU SAY NO TO FOR 3*s??????

Someone please answer the question or stop saying this?

You guys dont like the current results with all 5 stars you will commit suicide with only a couple of 5's with a bunch of 3 and 4 stars...

Nobody, of course, has said any of that. You may be missing the point. These kids all come because they think they're leaving after a year. That is the implicit promise that Cal has made, even when it is obvious that some shouldn't. It ought to be more obvious that they have to go, ready or not, to keep the pipeline flowing. If you don't want to call that being pushed out, fine. Call it what you want.

I'm not sure why we'd be committing suicide to think otherwise. We did actually have a program before Coach Cal, you know.

#1 You said:

"Is it anti-Cal to wish he wouldn't push every single guy out the door so that we could build the depth it will take to win titles? Just wondering about the rules of what we're allowed to think here. TIA!"

Name one kid that Cal pushed out other than (jokingly) Cousins and MKG?

Can you do it?

If so name them.

Never won at UMass and Memphis?

Is this the most pathetically uneducated first post in RR history?
Can you read Brian Poe? He's only won one title here and none at those other two schools, obviously you are the most uneducated because you can read!

He pushed Goodwin out? If there was ever a player that might have been "Rod Rhodesed" it could have been Archie due to the twins and young. But i have been told he wasn't, remember Archie went higher than many expected.

He never pushed Kyle out, awful take there.

Liggins - Are you a real fan? Everyone knows Liggins story...really, really dumb here.

Lee? You simply are not well acquainted with this program pal.

Utter and complete ********. Let's prove it.

Provide a transcript where Cal promises anything of the sort to a recruit.

You can't.

Provide the names of five players that have clearly stated their intentions to return and subsequently had their scholly withdrawn or were otherwise forced out.

You can't.

Absent such proof, youare just another cal hating troll that can't distinguish coach speak or use common sense.

Hillbilly? You say that as if it is derogatory on a UK board with a bunch of SE UK fans.

I live in Lex but thats ok, you just proved you are not a real fan, and a particularly ignorant fan in general.

They cannot answer those questions.

Every year, same stuff but no one can answer those questions.

Just like the very few, not saying anyone here, that want to replace Cal...with who?

If it isnt true or no reasonable solution exists then it is kind of silly to pound that drum.

I am totally fine with critiquing Cal's decisions and in game coaching, Lord knows I do that myself.
The only name they can ever say is brad Stevens. Like there is a magic wand to make him coach here

If you can't see that he needs to start trying to keep some of his freshmen for more than one year then you better get used to these losses in the tournament.

What do you suggest? Lie to them? Make them ride the pine, come off the bench so to intentionally keep their draft projections horrible? What exactly do you do to a HS superstar, a top 20 recruit to keep him out of the NBA? What about not recruiting them at all, grabbing some top 20-70 projects? Would that please you if we had a shot at the title just every 2-3 years in stead of every year?

Some of you people amaze me.

I'm the biggest Cal supporter you'll find, but there is one thing I wish he did

I really really wish he would recruit the 50s and 60s and get a few good players who won't be OADs (as well as some top 10 talents who will be OADs) so he could build up the depth needed for a championship team.

Both times we had multiple starters from a previous year return, we either won a championship or won 38 straight games.

Cal is a great coach and we're lucky to have him though, and anyone who thinks we should have a different coach is either an idiot or a troll

God forbid a fan wanting a title. I don't have millions of dollars to look forward to like the players. It means a bit more to me.

We all want titles but you guys overlook the obvious:

In order to get titles you have to make deep runs. We do that just about every year now - we didnt the last 20 years.

If we dont win titles because of the OAD what is the reason for the other 350 schools who dont win it every year with experienced teams?

Maybe we just lost a basketball game.

1966, 1975, 1984, 1992, 1997 lots of good teams lost with experience...

The we went 20 years without a Final Four but let's not let facts get in the way....

2010 upset loss in EE
2011 underdogs made it to FF with most difficult path
2012 champs
2014 8 seed FF
2015 upset, lost only one game
2017 lost to #1 seed on last second shot

You guys are more entitled than most teenagers these days, find a coach that has brought his school back to such prominence better than Cal has for UK. 20 years no FF prior... have I said this enough?

Name the top 20 kids you say no to for the top 50-60?

And oh by the way - the top 50 - 60 are not coming if you are getting a few Top 10's every year.

Top 50-60 expect to play, not be recruited over.

So you are looking at Top100-125 players.

Makes the question even better:

Name the top 20 kids you say no to for the top 100-125?

Here's the thing, history has shown that teams with a mix of Juniors/Seniors with 2 or 3 very very good OADs win championships or come very close.

Look at dook in 2015. Talented core of OADs in Winslow, Okafor, and Jones but very good and experienced players in Jefferson and Cook to complement that talent. Hell, look at us in 2015. Good experience combined with OAD talent took us to 38 straight wins.

Having been a fan since the mid 60's, I remember the long periods of drought between deep tournament runs. During Cal's. tenure you can sum up the drought with one number. 2013.

I frankly hope he keeps calling out these unreasonable few.

You can cherry pick CatChow but I'll play along...

We took the #2, #8, and #14 recruits in Jefferson's class (rated #36)... which do you turn down?

By the way we also took #40 WCS that year as well ... who stayed and played well, so we did do what you wanted and signed a better player than Jefferson.

As for Cook he was in the following class... rated #38

Which of Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague, MKG, Kyle Wiltjer do you turn down for the 8th best PG who is barely 6 foot, after you have signed the #1 point guard?

It is not as easy or black and white as many of you think it is...

WCS is my perfect example of a player who we pick up who is in the 40s/50s and stays for a good amount of time

You guys are acting like I'm trashing Calipari as a coach when I just think having a few players who will stay 3 years would win us championships. Look at what happened when we had the Harrison's stay 2 years, WCS stay 3 years, or what happened when Lamb and Jones both stayed 2 years.

I'd love to keep getting the recruits we're getting, and it's not in my place to criticize Calipari because what he's doing is clearly working, but I personally think if we got 4* talent to stay 3 years we would have multiple titles this decade

I dont think you are trashing Cal, I know you are a great fan.

Just saying those 4 stars expect playing time, WCS was a project, an enigma, hell he still is...

It's not that easy, kids dont want to sit or be recruited over.

Roy wanted all of our players, just this morning he listed all the kids he recruited way harder and longer than Cal or K and just didnt get them. He had no choice but to take lesser talent.

They don't get it. We are on every magazine cover, sports show, and its not enough. We even had the ESPN crews saying we flame out in 2nd round, we didn't. We didn't have respect at the 1st round, but it all changed by late Friday. Some people!

I think several posters don't realize how difficult it is to win a title. The best team doesn't win it every year and luck is a factor in every tournament. I hate that we got beat, but it doesn't mean we had a bad season. The kids played hard and lost to a very good team that is well coached. I bleed blue no matter how far we go in the tournament.

Hell Yes! This! That's the question the ones who ***** about experienced 'depth' can never answer. The OAD system sucks, but it was that much-coveted 'experienced depth' that everyone pines for that has been critical no-shows for us in the biggest tournament spots (ie: Patterson vs WVU, WCS in 2015, Willis today) Not bashing these kids at all --- three of my favorites in the Cal era, in fact. That said, the original question begs an answer: Which 5* do you turn down in lieu of a 3*-4*? Most of the fans arguing for the 'build depth with 3*'s' approach would be the first ones bitching if Cal gave an open scholarship to said 3* when Cal could have signed a 5*!

The current OAD system is terrible for college basketball, but until it changes, Cal is the best in the business at navigating it!

Keep fighting the good fight, brianpoe and kybassfan. Honestly, you have to wonder if most of these people really think through what they are saying before they type it.

Lol at the notion that Cal "pushes these guys out the door". He encourages them do what he feels is best for THEM. You think maybe that's why these blue chippers come to UK in the first place? He is pushing NO ONE out if he feels it's best for THEM to return. However, he defers to their wishes for their own future if they happen to disagree with his assessment.

Imagine that.

I like Cal. I hate OAD's. We'll always be really good but OAD laden teams HAVE to have an unbelievably great player like AD. They don't come along often which is why I think we'll be a top 10 team every year with a lot of Sweet 16 and Elite 8 teams but no more NC's in the Cal era.
Yes, AD comes around very rarely and that is the rub with one and done.

Take the best pg,, sg and one of the best bigs then surround them with multi year players.. Unless you're happy with 30 win seasons and no titles.. Then keep recruiting as is..

You wont get 30 wins for at least 3 seasons with this strategy, half of you will commit suicide or be committed to an institution by then.

And you will rarely ever get the best of each position each year.

Wont work, sorry.

Yes, because we were going to so many more final fours and winning so many more titles with other coaches and systems than with Cal's.
