You would think that after the Elite 11, in California, someone at Rivals would have said, "oh,oh, we better change this kids rating like now!" But, here we are the first Monday after the Oregon evaluations, and the embarrassment continues. Sad state of events for Rivals.

I could be wrong but I believe most of the recruiting services have defined evaluation periods. They just don't move a guy up or down because of a camp performance. He'll get moved up, just be patient.

That's not how rivals handles updated player rankings.

I bet Russo will get a bump when Rivals does their next round of re-rankings.

Mike Ferrell came on to the Husker premium board and told us that Patrick O'Brian (Another Elite 11 QB) would be getting a bump the next time they re-rank kids.

I believe that Jeremy Crabtree and Brian Stumpf are both on the Rivals 100 evaluation team and they were at the Elite 11/Opening in Beaverton filing reports. I would suspect that their input will help Russo. But Mike Farrell remains a Rivals evaluator and there is nothing he would ever do to help out a Rutgers kid. It'll be interesting to see what happens to AR when Rivals gets around to revising its last ratings of Russo, if ever.

he was listed as a 3 star in most services other than rivals before the invite. They should bump him up to 4 stars.

Where's the hate from "Mike Farrell" coming from? Couldn't get into Rutgers? ???

Who gives a rat's patooty? I say bump him down to no stars. He hasn't signed a letter of intent and all this'll accomplish is bring more attention from other recruiters.

He went to academic and athletic powerhouse Central Connecticut State. He's a New England guy with a strong BC bias. If anyone has ever read, or heard him say, anything positive about RU ,it must have been under duress.

or bring in attention from other recruits that actually care about how many stars their potential teammates have.

Rivals gets paid for clicks, not for getting it right. As long as he remains a two star it generates traffic.

He should be upgraded on the rating before the serious recruiting happens after the HS football season. In the big picture...does it really matter that much? Rivals and other services miss on prospects (both over and under) all the time. It doesn't change the fact that kid seems to have physical talent. RU needs to sign him and then develop him. We'll see how good he is in a few years.

OK, let's answer this one time and be done with it. Rivals ranks their kids at specific intervals. At the next interval, Russo will 99.99% likely get a bump. The Opening / Elite 11 is not a Rivals event, and that is why you haven't seen much content yet (even premium). This is obviously a Nike event, and Rivals camps are sponsored by another company. And unlike some sights, we're not just going to pretend that we're there.

This has nothing to do with site traffic. They are not doing anything different than how they've always done things. The only people making it an issue are the subscribers and posters themselves, who just don't seem to understand the ranking process that Rivals has.

John/Shawn/Bobby have already talked to Russo's dad throughout the event and will be doing a large feature on Russo on how everything went.

Now mind you, John/Shawn/Bobby aren't the ones ranking him. Russo may be bumped to a high 3 star. He may be bumped to a 4 star. Nobody knows until the rankings come out. You know and I know that Russo is definitely a high level recruit. Mike Farrell and Adam Freidman (East coast guy) aren't going to hold back a 4th star just because it's Rutgers. Rutgers has nothing to do with how they rank Russo. It's about his game play (and remember, the only tapes he has are a single season as a starter in which he did pretty well, but it's not like he threw every down). It's about his workouts. It's about the action they've seen.

Agree with almost everything you say is this excellent response, except the part about Farrell. He is a pathetic scoundrel when it comes to all things Rutgers. What you said about Russo applies to Farrell, in spades- it's about his game play; it's about the action we've seen. I wish I had the same confidence in his ability to be objective as you seem to.

The only reason I think Russo getting 4 stars is good for Rutgers is that for some reason I think it opens the doors for other 4 star kids to commit. I know stars don't really mean anything but I think it does for the recruits. They want to see other highly touted kids committed to the same program.

Personally, I don't think he needs the stars boost to accomplish that. I think his performance was enough to get the attention of other recruits. Every kid recruited by Rutgers now nows who Russo is. Having said that, I think he gets the boost to 4 stars anyway. Frankly, Rivals is behind the other services anyway. The only thing I'd worry about is the amount of attention that he'll now be getting. I'm sure quite a few top programs who aren't entirely set at QB will come calling. Hopefully, he sticks to his commitment. I think he'll be big for you guys.

It does not matter at this point. AR EARNED a state championship, EARNED a RU offer and EARNED an Elite 11 spot. Who cares what someone gives him.

Agreed. I don't really understand the angst over recruiting ratings. I'd rather have a 2 star or 3 star QB lead us to the B1G Championship and National Championship than having a 5 star QB continue our bowl streak.

Of course you would, because that is what Rutgers has had for at least 15 years now. The two and three star recruit filled class, who has led us to meaningless Bowls. But, how many Championships have we won over the same time span!? ....... NONE!
It is always easy to take that road, if you don't actually have any 4 or 5 St^r players, and who knows maybe all the stars(no pun intended) will align just right some year and we win a championship. But, make no mistake about it, we will need those higher Star kids to be consistently at the top of this league.
Perception, that word alone will take us to where we should be. And, the current perception of our homegrown 4 & 5 star kids is fallback school. We need to become a destination.
Now, after saying all of that, 3 Star kids are very valuable to a program. They keep the 4/5 Stars honest. i love what Flood has done this year with the recruits, 3 stars yes, but many hidden jems who should project much higher in 4 years. But, he can't continue to drive this program on hopes and prayers.

"Of course you would, because that is what Rutgers has had for at least 15 years now."

15 years ? How about FOREVER ?
Rutgers has never successfully recruited significant numbers of 4-star recruits. Since it's never been done, perhaps you might wanna consider the possibility that it's not doable. Rutgers is late to the whole "big-time football" thing and perhaps that has something to do with the fact that most top prospects are spurning RU for those schools with a more storied history. And perhaps those same recruits are just as impressed with the improvement in the Rutgers program in the last dozen years or so as you seem to be...what with that whole "meaningless Bowl" crap. Guys like you deserve a Terry Shea-coached team.

First, don't understand the hatred for Farrell. He always mentions Rutgers when interviewing recruits. Just because he tells it like he sees it doesn't mean he has a thing out for us. Disagreeing with someone doesn't always have to turn to a dislike.

Second, Rivals won't spite HS kids ratings just because they weren't invited to a camp. Rivals makes its business on scouting. If they consistently rate kids low that ends up being good then they will lose their reputation and people will look at other sites for ratings. Remember this is a business. Rivals knows what Russo did its will pretty much be a guarantee that he will at least be a high 3 star.

But the thing is, they have had years like the 2012 and 2011 class where they DID recruit a significant number of 4 star players. Carroo, Hamilton, Muller and Lumpkin were part of those classes and they are all NFL prospects, not to mention Kroft. It's been done before and it can be done again.

As in the 247 site? They are in direct competition with Rivals and that helps my point.

My point is to the incompetence within Rival, which allows a newer site like 247 to better evaluate players. Thus increasing that market share, and soon will make Rival irrelevent!

I'm normally down for the stars debate with most recruits, but clearly Russo has proven to us all that his stars don't mean squat.

He could be 1 star or no star- we should all feel good about this kid. Anthony Russo can flat out play.
