What a silver lining this kid is. How long have we been clamoring for an RB like this? I hope he turns this into a 1st Team All-B1G year. And Ajay is a future star. Love what Applewhite is doing

Yes. I can't wait until he touches the ball.

Allen is going to be a beast if he works.

Having an actual #1 and a stud Freshman waiting in the wings. It's like what Bo had year after year and we haven't had since.

I'm trying not to get too high on Allen. Watch a new staff come in, Applewhite leaves, and Allen leaves with him. OBVIOUSLY I don't want that to happen...

Yeah I wonder how many players explored the portal this week? Is it like Indeed.com where you go online and they say, “Needed… Frosh/soph receiver with great hands. <4.6 40s need not apply. Prefer P5 experience, unless from Iowa”

Neither one is that great. Just ask Oldjar.
They're not great. And they're not seeing cutback lanes. If you can hit cutback lanes and you can pass deep, that's the formula to success in the college game. I think they have talent for sure. But if they don't open up their vision to be able to find a hole that may not always be assigned, that talent will always be limited.

If Grant keeps playing the way he has the rest of the season, he'll be playing on Sundays next season. Kid is a stud.

I don't think we are either.. CT is not really a running QB, although he has gotten us a few yards when it's there.. I don't think he has any designed runs, or if he does, we haven't seen those.
The Kent State kid really hurt OU with zone reads though. I gotta believe NU will run that several times, could be wrong.

The majority went to the left side which, in theory, with Teddy and Corcoran should be NU's stronger side.

I do think OU will be vulnerble to NU running some RPO's.

I don't think that is Whipple's thing.. the QB has options, it's just pass options, rub routes, and other fancy pass plays designed to open up the defense.

Heck, we may see some RPO stuff, but I'm expecting to see Whipple sling it around all day. I hope we don't abandon the running game, because truth is, I'm not sold on Whipple.. to me, the offense still has issues to work out.

MJ has to be the head coach and in charge of it though. Can't have coordinators out there doing whatever they want to anymore. Some of the accountability that is being talked about goes right to the other coaches too.

Nope, I actually watch the games and pay attention. If you watch the great college RBs in recent memory, what they had in common is they could hit a cutback lane. Monte Ball, Leveon Bell, Ezekiel Elliot, Etienne, Taylor, etc. Teams that have a running back capable of cutting back at the proper times almost always have a strong running game. Like I said, an effective vertical pass game and a cutback run game is college football on easy mode.

OU's gonna double stack the Benhart side and be in CT's face a lot then.

We ran quite a bit of true read option last week

it was a successful play for us & I think we will see it pretty consistently all year

I just looked at the highlight tape. There is some RPO, stuff, but I don't think he's actually reading anyone. It's just looks more like a fake handoff is all.

There also are a couple of read option looking handoffs to the running back, but it doesn't look like he is reading anyone, and he only kept it on that one TD score.

So I guess technically we are running those, but to my eyes, the handoffs look predetermined with the reads being what receiver to go to.

Edit: maybe it's just CT is good at doing it and making it look smooth.

The QB is always reading someone, always. May be a safety, LB, especially on passing plays.

We ran an option on ND and a QB draw in both home games,

Well on passing plays of course you are checking down on your receivers and you know what kind of look the D gave you when you started the snap. But the fake handoff to start those pass plays is not a read.

On running plays, the whole staring down a LB or edge rusher to decide whether or not to hand the ball or keep it, is not happening. Casey kept it on the score, but every other time, he hands it to the rb. The only other time Casey is running is when it's a busted play.

Here are some plays for you to look at: I don't see any post snap reads going on here. Everything is decided before the ball is snapped.

I guess the point being, we haven't seen CT take any big hits from running the ball, mostly because he's not running it, except in certain situations. At the end of last weeks game when the play broke down and he went for the first down, he came down hard on his right shoulder, but that was just a busted pass play. I don't think Mark Whipple will put CT in a position where he has to run it or take a lot of hits.

Grant and Allen are good but what will they do against quality run defenses? And what is Applewhite doing with these other running backs, nothing.

I totally agree , CT is a definite pass first QB, I think they tried that last year with AM ,, but he wasn’t a quick enough blinker and ended up running to much, some of that had to do with protection but a lot was he couldn’t read things fast enough.

Exactly, we haven't played anybody yet. I think people are getting a little carried away, especially the comment I heard in the last game about Grant being a top 5 back in the country. He’s done nothing yet to warrant that claim.

Can you imagine if Grant were any good? He would have about 800 yards now. And Applewhite hasn’t done anything with our 3rd and 4th stringers, so he sucks too.

If only we had the players and coaches to be successful, I guess… smh.

We play 2 teams (maybe) this year with quality personnel

the others are worse than the G5 team we just lost to
