Come on Coach, up 25+ with about 3-4 minutes to go and you don't clear the bench until the Clock hits 1.30 and only after MSU puts in their walkons.

The walkons don't get many chances. This was their chance to get some game action and score.

Next time, when the lead is 20+ I wont the bench cleared or you're fired !

What's worse, of the 9 B1G games RU lost last year, the biggest deficit was 12, so the walk-ons never got to go into a blowout loss

You are probably joking, but I do hate when coaches wait until the last minute to put bench guys in the game.
Or sometimes even less than a minute.

The main reason not to like Pike is he has given RU MBB fans hope for the future of the MBB program.
Now RU MBB fans have meltdowns every-time a game isn't looking good, even if it is won at the end.
Damm you Pike for taking away our expectations of losses and filling our heads with the hope of victory
At least we RU fans can find fault with the RU players (in our expert opinions) that don't live up to the high standards expected of them when RU destroys a top notch program and holds them to under 40 points.
Before that damm Pike improved the team a victory like that wouldn't have any complaints and if there as any, the complainer would be crucified by the rest of this board.
A board tradition of whining about how bad RU MBB is has been destroyed by that Damm Pike
( except for when RU doesn't look like it will live up to our best in the B1G fantasy that Pike gives up hope to achieve in future)

After suffering through that inexplicable 5 game losing streak, I'm surprised he didn't keep the pedal to the metal to the end.
The way MSU was able to come back in the first half and close it to four points had me really concerned. If I'm the coach, all I want to see is us keeping them at bay.

Yes, joking. It is not serious.

But, I would have liked to see Nathan and other guys get a few more minutes. They work hard as scout team guys and this would have been a nice reward....3 or 4 minutes of game action.

Maybe, the thought process is that you dont call off the dogs until the other team concedes.

Billy Martin was so superstitious, we could have a 10 run lead with 2 out in the ninth, and if he saw guys collecting their equipment or standing next to the runway to get back to clubhouse he’d fine you a $1000 bucks in Kangaroo court.
Kangaroo court is not covered by the player union, their are no grievances, when Don Baylor says cough it up, there are no arguments. the money is collected and used for team parties.
You couldn’t even hint the game was in the bag.

I’ve seen 15 point leads evaporate in 4 minutes, and worry about it.
I’m sure the coach worries about it 10 times more than me
Realize the OP was joking but this is exactly right. The reality of what can happen in today’s game combined with a coach’s paranoia.

The biggest reason not to like Pike is losing to TTFP in anything when you clearly have the better team.

All kidding aside, I am very happy with the team that he has built, but that loss was definitely up there when it comes to the disappointing losses in my life as a Rutgers fan.

Dude their reward is all the perks of being on a division 1 team. Flights around the country, visits to some of the most prestigious arenas. If they never play a minute of game time they're still rewarded enough. He put them in at a normal time. Maybe a minute earlier but really who the hell cares.

Izzo didn't put his real subs until the last couple of minutes when they pounded us. Purdue did the same thing to us when they defeated us by 50 in 2016. In fact a couple guys on their bench never even got into that game. Payback sometimes is justified.

I just looked at that box score. My God that roster was pathetic

Lol, flying to an away game is a perk.

Not that I agree with this practice, but typically the team ahead waits for the opposing coach to wave the white flag and put its subs in.

DB- how much were you fined for running passed Meecham(?) rounding 3rd? I would love to hear the story on that play (genuinely). All the best.

Frankly, I was hoping to get the lead to 30 so when the bench cleared, I was like- well there goes a chance at 30 pt win. But then Mag scored!

I remember a game in high school, it was the last inning and we were up big, I was out in the field and there was a big commotion on the bench. I didn't know what happened but all I could see was our coach ripping a couple of our bench guys a new one. Turns out that they wearing changing out of their spikes before the game was over.
Never happened again.

The only thing I take exception to in your post is "with the hope of victory". Pike has changed that to "with the expectation of victory".

Agree with this. I recall as a high school soph being put into a state tournament bball game up 20. Lead was less than 10 in a matter of minutes and starters went back in.

Also, a coach in a girls softball tournament we were 1 strike away from mercying the other team, and we lost.

Talk about painful.
Once your opponent gets two girls on base and you start throwing the ball around, the merry go round starts and you can’t stop it.
When you’re up that many runs, hit the cutoffs and take the easy out.
Easier said than done
