Saw this morning where the lead guy and founding member of Drive By Truckers, has apologized for the insensitivity associated with the band’s name. They are open to discussion of changing the name of the band and for what he says, was a “stupid decision to name the band as they did years ago”. So - like the Drew Brees situation, other players lashed out and said if he doesn’t see what’s wrong with his position, then he is the problem. I’m struggling with this. Because I think I’m sensitive to these issues but now I’m worried because I honestly don’t follow why the name Drive By Truckers is insensitive to the racial disparity we’re currently dealing with. And I’m being honest - can someone help me understand what I’m missing Because the article never went into any detail as to why the bands name is insensitive. Just that the bandmembers all agree that it is and it needs to be addressed. What am I missing? It’s an Honest question.

It’s just like the Virginia sword thing. I had no idea the handles had anything to do with slavery and I’m sure 98% had no idea. What good is it to spend a ton of money to change something that nobody was offended by? I think Florida-GA line has something to do with slavery they should probably quit.

Does he ever say what “dbt” meant and how it was offensive?

I tried to read most of it but all I got was “I’m sorry I’m white”.

Here's what Patterson Hood actually wrote. I think it's a good read with a lot of introspection, something all of us could get better at.

https://www.npr.org/2020/06/17/879393187/now-about-the-bad-name-i-gave-my-band?

It makes much more sense after reading that. He was heavily influenced by rap, soul, and other black music. His homage to rap music was “Drive By” and southern rock “Truckers”. 20 years later it doesn’t sit well with him to “honor” black music with “Drive By”. I would have never known that but it’s interesting introspection I can respect. It wasn’t overdone and dramatic.

In a nutshell, in 2020 he feels his band could be named something better than a tactic made famous via black on black gang violence.

I remember in HS my sr class made an unofficial class shirt with a Mexican cartoon that said building a bridge to our future. It was because they were rebuilding the interstate bridge in our town and literally 200 Mexicans were doing to demo and building. Everyone thought the shirt was funny, teachers, and administrators included. Almost 20 years later I’m not sure that’s the best taste. Times change and people owe it to themselves to not be stuck in whatever time period in their past.

He didn't, and I'm still puzzled by it.

I have absolutely no idea why his band name could be offensive, or even why he thinks it is offensive.

One of the most disingenuous statements I've seen regarding the ATL incident was from the prosecutor.

Police had been called to the restaurant over complaints of a car blocking the drive-thru lane. Police body-camera video showed Brooks and officers having a relatively calm and respectful conversation — “almost jovial,” according to the district attorney — before things rapidly turned violent when officers tried to handcuff him. Brooks wrestled with officers, grabbed one of their stun guns and fired it at one of them as he ran through the parking lot.

“Mr. Brooks on the night of this incident was calm, he was cordial and really displayed a cooperative nature,” Howard said..."but their actions really reflected other kinds of emotions."

He basically said that they were treating the suspect very well until something changed. He went on to imply that the something that changed was not them being attacked by the suspect, rather them suddenly remembering how racist they were and setting out to kill the black man. It is unreal how the left refuses to make a distinction between the George Floyds of the world and things like the ATL incident. If I could know for sure that there was a way to know if it was racially motivated, I would bet my entire net worth that those ATL cops would have treated a white man EXACTLY the same if the only difference in the encounter was skin color.

Finding race in everything literally steals the message from the legitimate cases were race is an issue and should be addressed. It is divisive and it ensures that progress will be slowed substantially. Choosing the wrong battles hurts things...

Money's getting tight, no one's touring, no income. Gotta get your name out there somehow to create some buzz. Only thing I can think of.

It’s important to separate things.
What I did as an 18 year old isn’t necessarily who I am now or who I was then. I did lots of immature things.

But I certainly would think back on my making of that shirt and say “wow pain, that was pretty stupid”.

If DBT was making fun of drive by shootings, meh, ok.

If he liked rap music and rap music was talking abt drive bys, then maybe rap music should apologize?

From all available evidence to me, Chauvin deserves the toughest sentence law will allow (minus the fact they changed the charges which I can’t understand).

From all available evidence to me, I’m not sure Brooks should have been fired. Suspended pending investigation? Sure.

It’s political now.

Obviously, someone was offended by it. Honestly, I had never given much thought to their logo or the "serpentine walls" and I don't think anyone would have made the connection if the school didn't put it out there.

The point is, the school referenced the logo representing the serpentine walls... which were built to hide slaves from the sight of the rest of the campus. You have to be able to see how that reference would be a problem.

This was an interesting op-ed to read. I enjoyed the history Hood wrote about and what he was thinking at any given moment within the periods of his life he mentioned.
Idont understand why Drive By Truckers is an offensive name. I get it- 'drive by' is a reference to gang activity and was his homage to an influential style of music when he came up with the name. That, to me, isnt really offensive though. More than just black gangs have been known to do drive bys. And gangsta rap as a whole needs to be eliminated before this name seems offensive to me.

...but i am a financially stable 39yo white male, so my opinion on this is moo(Friends reference, since im keepin it white).

I think it was a bad shoot but not murder. Kicking the guy while he's dying was a really bad look.

This was not in the same ballpark as the Floyd murder. In custody vs during apprehension.

Brooks checked the boxes for suicide by cop but that doesn't mean it was a good shoot. The taser was no longer a threat to anyone but maybe the officer didn't process that in the heat of the moment.

Drive By sounds like cultural appropriation to me. Everyone knows white people never do drive bys. They probly should stop playing the guitar too. I'm sure they stole that sound from Robert Johnson. This is all totally out of hand and completely ridiculous. Next we will ban Coca Cola because Pemberton invented it. And why isnt KFC getting rid of the Colonel ?? Or that Quaker dude on the oatmeal box ? Jose Cuervo ?

I'm actually afraid that them escalating the charge may result in over-prosecution, them not having the evidence to convict at that level, and him walking free. If that happens, the DA should be the target for outrage for political pandering rather that prosecuting according to the evidence that he has.

The "I got him" statement could win over a jury and him kicking (still haven't seen the video, only a still - kick could be a stretch) the guy won't do him any favors. But all things considered the jury is going to see a tame situation go south quick with an officer having to make some split second decisions. I'd probably argue his mistake was pursing the guy period (knew he didn't have a gun). You got his info -get backup and try again. But your real life gut reaction is going to be "go get the guy" and I can't say I wouldn't shoot a guy that just whipped my *** and then unloaded a taser at me. He probably 17ed something up, but not felony murder/life in prison 17 up.

I was speaking of Chauvin, the George Floyd cop, who absolutely needs to be prosecuted, but I think that they have upped the charges on him as well to something that will be a challenge to prove. If they can prosecute him on 3rd degree it should be open and shut. If they go up from there, it can be difficult. Imagine that guy walking free...

I think the 9 minute video of kneeling on the guy is going to be emotional enough for the jury to rule guilty on 2nd degree in MN. Guy just looked cold blooded kneeling on him while the guy pleaded for his life. I wish they could bury him under a cell for that. However, I think 2nd degree max in MN is 45 years. Crazy to me that is what Chauvin could max out at and the Brooks cop faces life and up to death.
