Another huge miss by Cal in CJ Frederick

I’m not particularly heartbroken over Frederick. If we get a better player, I won’t care about Powell either. I really don’t care if a guy is from Kentucky or not if he can play.

BUT, I will say this. Kentucky produces a decent number of 4* guys that will make good role players off the bench. A player of the caliber of a Jemarl Baker or Johnny Juzang if he was from Kentucky rather than the west coast, might be more apt to stick around to be that role player even after a season that didn’t go the way he hoped.

But that said. Calling CJ Frederick a “huge miss” is kinda silly.

Can you imagine the hate Calipari would get by starting a kid as a sophomore who averaged a whopping 7.5 points a game on a team that scored 84 a game?

Most of the fans were disgusted with Skal’s performance because he did not produce. EJ Montgomery had the same scoring numbers as CJ and he was one of the most unpopular players in recent memory.

Sure CJ shot well from 3 but he only made 1.3 a game. Have you ever watched him play? He has more trouble getting open than Allen and he played in a wide open offense that spread the floor and he had the National POY gathering double teams down low.

People here perceive him as a KY kid. That's why they want him here. If they didn't think he's from KY, they wouldn't care about him.

What a great get Kellan Grady was for Cal. I watched Frederick play several times. Good shooter but not quick enough to drive the lane and not a great defender.

Each great team has the right role players, and those teams would not be nearly as good without them. Fredrick is this type of player. He is not a star, but a valuable role player especially for a team that is lacking in shooters. There are a lot of teams that Fredrick would be a nice piece of. This years Cat team could have used him, if Cal would have let him play, but he wouldn't let Juzang or Allen play, so he wouldn't have let Fredrick play either.

I am glad that CJ will be in a UK uniform next year. We have added 2 shot makers to go along with Dontaie. This will require the defense to extend out which will cut down on double teams and help defense while opening up driving to the basket opportunities. Hopefully Cal will use an offense that emphasizes ball and player movement along with special plays to take advantage of mismatches.
