People can spin it how they want. I have been a fan of Andrew Bunch and think he will be a solid back-up to Martinez. He may not have the same upside as Martinez but he's a good fit for our offense because he has been in a similar system.
He's plenty mobile. I think arm strength and accuracy may be an issue.

Although you may not choose to believe it, until Gebbia picked up his game, Bunch was outplaying Gebbia and early in fall practice was ahead of him. Bunch is decent.

Shhhh.. You were supposed to keep that on the down low. Huskersalts slept on a ledge on the 39th floor last night. We want him to take the elevator to the lobby, not the alternative route.

Mark me down as a "meh" on Bunch and a "no thanks" on Vedral from my limited exposure. As always, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
I tend to agree with this. I have an open mind, but I don't see Bunch or Vedral as championship caliber quarterbacks. That is what we are all hoping Frost brings us back to, right? Championships. We need better backups than Bunch and Vedral. But it is what it is. Can't change the reality of the situation. Next man up and all that ****....

Vedral and Bunch may not be championship caliber, but there are not a lot of teams that have championship backups. Unless you get some kid who embraces competition, or embraces they may not play for two years, you are always going to have a little bit of an issue, and this happens at a lot of schools. Hopefully going forward we get some of this.

I don't love McCaffrey's arm, either. I hope they take another QB this class. I do actually like the kid from Alabama.

Not trying to be a smartass here, but you DID have your money on Gebbia, right? Give Bunch a try. Can't be worse than Ryker Fyfe. To me he looked better in our offense than Gebbia in the Spring game.

If Ryker Fyfe is the standard, we are in for a long *** year.

Hey, they're both backups. You can only prepare chopped-liver so many ways. I just tend to think that Bunch is better in this offense than Fyfe was in Riley's. He had success in a similar system and has more upside than Fyfe, IMO.

I did. I thought it would take Martinez longer to catch up or pull ahead. I was never going to be shocked Martinez got the job, but I didn't think it would be this soon.

But I have to trust the coaches on that decision, and I also have to trust the coaches had Bunch as #3 and out of the two-horse race for a reason.

you guys are forgetting about are new walk on qb frost said hes thrown more passes than any one has at fall camp
No, Frost said he’s the QB who has most recently seen live game action (High School). Plus he’s 3rd string at best, Bunch is much better than anyone on here will give him credit for and I believe he will be a serviceable backup.

C'mon man, we're in Frost's first year, and multiple existing players that have been in the program are leaving...because they are being outplayed by new arrivals. If that isn't upgrading players across the board, I don't know what is.

Think about the last time you felt pretty comfortable about our depth at nearly every position. It's been quite some time. And we haven't even played a game yet. Think where we are going to be in a year. Or even 2 short years.

This QB thing leaves us pretty thin at that position, but we are in better shape than we've been at QB in at least 3 years, and probably more, because we had a running QB in a pro system with Tommy. At least now our starter is a run-pass threat in a run-pass system. Plus we have a backup with run-pass attributes. We're gonna be fine.

The point I'm making is that you said you would be happy to be proven wrong...when you were proven wrong just yesterday. None of us are qualified to lead a team. We don't know what's going on in coaches' meetings.

Trust these coaches. Even though it was a bold move, and a risk, to make the younger player the starter, Frost stuck to his plan, and was upfront with Gebbia. And he knew the possible blowback. Apparently he was comfortable enough with Bunch as backup that he would risk losing Gebbia by naming Martinez the starter.

These guys are going to take us places that we haven't seen since TO. I firmly believe that. Even in a tough conference like the B1G.

Let's not make it sound like TG transferring out was part of their plan. The world isn't going to end without him, but it hurts the depth.

We put a lot of shine on Fyfe's name until we saw him start and then that bucket of cold water felt pretty bad on cold November days. God forbid Martinez blows a knee and then bunch tweaks an ankle, it's gonna be a loooooooooooooooong year.

Do you really think the coaches didn't know they would risk losing Gebbia if they named the new kid the starter??

They could have gone the safe route of naming Gebbia the starter, because Martinez isn't going to leave when he's been on campus for a semester. Or he would be much less likely to leave after a semester than Gebbia would be, after being overtaken by a younger player.

I'm of the mind that they are perfectly fine with Bunch taking snaps as the backup. They would have liked to have Gebbia, but they are comfortable with Bunch. And...if Bunch were that far behind the top 2, wouldn't they have been a lot more nervous about losing Gebbia? The coaches knew what they were doing.

It is what it is. This is this. The Buddhist in me believes this to be the case.

Good luck to Gebbia, frankly, I think he's making the right decision for himself. You get passed up on the depth chart at QB by a true freshman, time to go.

Of course they knew it was a risk, but you can't know he'll do it til he does it.

I would have named Gebbia, and basically told him, "It's your job to KEEP." Martinez standing next to me on the sidelines, that kind of pressure. But that's just me, and I can second guess HCSF here.

In the long-run, I am confident he made the right call. I think Adrian is a talent, and he's our guy at QB. So we support the kid 100%. GBR

Which is another angle to consider, for sure. Nice post Beav, this logic is sound.

If they were really close in terms of running the offense, which I believe they were, I would have named Gebbia the starter in a second. A young kid like Martinez, that has only been on campus for 8 months, is going to be a lot more accepting as the backup than a player that was here well before the younger player showed up. You name Gebbia the starter, secure his services for another year, and then go about getting new blood in the door.
