An Inconvenient Truth: Acker our 3rd string back over Anderson?

I pointed out that McCall has Roberts, Anderson, Acker, Shuler, Vault, Vitale which is a TON more athletic collectively than what was previous. Yet, I have to watch all of this talent on the bench while McCall only deploys one RB and a scheme that doesn't utilize our talent. And you probably will keep your blinders on and stay away from the question, "Why did Vitale only play limited plays?"

Roberts is 5'8''. Anderson has struggled holding on to the ball. Shuler has dropped many passes and some punts. Acker is 5'9''. Vault has struggled on the jet sweep and running routes. Vitale has been banged up and has dropped passes as well.

They're talented guys, but all of them have negatives, whether it's measurables or performance.

Are you saying that NU should move to a pro style offense with Roberts or Acker as Jackson's backup at tailback?

Also, are you crazy? This group is not as talented as the 1995 backfield, the 2000 backfield, or the 2002/2003 backfield.

The 2002 backfield had Jason Wright, Noah Herron, Ashton Aikens, Kevin Lawrence, and Mr. Football Ohio, Jeff Backes.

Even 2006 had a good group: Tyrell Sutton, Terrell Jordan, Omar Conteh, and Brandon Roberson.

Turk, the game is football. In football, it is important to be able to catch the ball. If your track stars can't catch a football, then what good are they as WR's? Pump up the athleticism of our current WR's all you want. I'll take the 4.5 second guys who catch just about every ball thrown to them. Zeke, Ebert, Philmore, Ward, Peterman, Patrick and Herbert are all among the top WR's to play at NU. Your so-called athletic WR's can't catch a cold.
LMAO. All I said was that you were wrong when you said that our present wide receivers weren't as athletic as the ones back in the day. They are!

That said, you wouldn't be happy either way. You fuss all day about how great 2 and low 3 stars are compared to high 3 [5.6+] and 4 stars, but when all of your 2 and low 3 stars flop, you blame McCall. Glades, you can't pick and choose, but it's comical how you advocate for 2 and low 3 star recruits then blast the recruiting as lacking when they mostly flitter.

I'm not sure I know what you are talking about. Over the last few days, I have suggested that Fitz wants a power running game. And, that we are now past the ugly stage and in fact do have a power running game that seems to be fairly successful. I've also said that throughout McCall's history, he has never been a power running game OC where a back gets the ball 30 times a game and leads a conference, much less a nation in touches. So, if we keep McCall, then he needs to take some coaching seminars on how to play to win with this power running offense. And, I have mentioned that we found success with 2 running backs this year, in the backfield at the same time. I think my only suggestion this whole week has been to further develop a 2 back system, AND, that we have the talent to do so with Long....who runs like wright, and catches like herron and blocks like Hardl. Where have we seen this before? Oh yeah, Herron and Jordan were a two back set.

As far as comparing RB depth. You are comparing underclassmen at this point so I don't think any comparison is fair. True, Walker could always get a solid RB to come here. Some who were also in the classes you mentioned but didn't name were Chris Brown, Dan Pohlman, Jordan, Clifton someone. But at the end of the day, Lawrence was ok, Jordan was a hard worker but nothing wow, Backes was moved to defense along with Pohlman, Aikens was interesting but his talent was moved to wide receiver since we were deep at RB's.

That said, the present team can compare competitively to any of those teams without taking anything away from either team.
Jackson is our bread and butter and is running behind the cruddiest OL than Wright, Herron, DA1, DA2 ran behind, and is not only just as big a workhorse but may break all the NU records. So, not sure who will match up to Juice once he is done. Certainly, Juice has had better underclassman seasons that all of those you mentioned. Long is a load, an absolute beast. He is a quicker version of Herron. Barely ever loses a yard, and has the best hands on the team. So, again, not sure what you mean, but give Long 2 more years. Anderson is still a freshman so give him time. You mention Backes, he was really something but the RB's were deep that year so he was moved to D. Similar thing happened with this team. Again, we have Ohio's #1 rated RB, Keith Watkins, who had offers from PAC10, SEC, BIG, Big 8, ACC, etc and definitely could have competed, but he is now a stud on defense. So, I differ mightedly from your opinion, I think we have done just as good as Walker recruiting RB's and dare I say better? Let's not even mention where Moten and Larkin fit in at. Dude, get real! We will have like 6 solid RB's on this roster next year. How many solid wr can we mention??

Long has the best hands on the team? This is what everyone is talking about when people say you don't know what you're talking about. You have NO CLUE who has the best hands on the team. You're talking just to hear yourself talk.

What will it take for you to give it a rest?

2. "Insidenu you are not". Your puns are cheesier than a Rovell tweet. That said, I am far FAR more "inside NU" than you are.

Our 'power running game' as you call it depends heavily on us spreading the formation and using one-back sets. What do you think would happen if we tried to run a pro style offense and take a receiver out of the formation and install a FB? Our OL has been dominated at the line of scrimmage in several games and I think we need the spread formation to force the defense cover another receiver.

If we want to run the ball out of a pro set, we need to recruit much better road-grating offensive linemen and some blocking TE.

Long is a load, an absolute beast. He is a quicker version of Herron. Barely ever loses a yard, and has the best hands on the team. So, again, not sure what you mean, but give Long 2 more years.

You're automatically disqualified. Long has only one year left. He played special teams as a true frosh. Don't ask me why, but he did.

You're RE-reading his posts? That's self-torture. Please don't do that to yourself.

You may not have said we lack talent at WR, but I did. I'm not talking about the true frosh. I'm talking about the personnel available in the bowl game. The burners were small and not sure handed. The guys with size were slow and also dropped passes. It was a disaster

Long has phenomenal hands. All he does is catch the ball when it's tossed to him. By my 'insidenu' comment, I meant the website. You dog them but I believe you dog them because you aren't good enough to contribute on that page and have to run some sidekick column that you claim fame with due to 3 NU football players liking it. When you get up to 10 NU football players, then you may be up there with the big boys over at insidenu.

Disqualified? That is a very very smart answer. BTW, you got any better ideas other than employing two backs? Because right now we are at the bottom over the last two years and what we have now isn't working.

Yes, our WR's could probably win a track meet against our past stars like Peterman and Lane. Wonderful! We're a football team, Turk.

And I'm so very, very serious when I talk about how 2-stars are superior to 4-stars. We need more guys like Ebert, Lane, and Markshausen, all of whom were 2-stars or zero-stars.

What have our uber athletic speedster WR's done this year? The fastest (a treasured 4-star) had 15 catches for less than 150 yards receiving. Another speedster, a high 3-star (Scout 4-star), had 11 catches for 93 yards. A third speedster, a 3-star, had 8 catches for 48 yards or 4 yards per game. CJ, a high 3-star, had 23 catches for 234 yards.

Two-stars Ebert, Lane, and Markshausen put up far better numbers than ALL of these WR's combined. So much for athleticism and stars.

Oh, and when have I ever blamed McCall? Just more Turk BS.

"Of course we have had good recruiting. In fact, we have more offensive talent on this team than ever before"

I would disagree on that, using NFL experience as a crude measure of talent:
1995/1996: Autry, Bates, & Musso all went on to have NFL experience, as well as a few olinemen
2005: Baz, Sutton, Peterman*
2007: Katka, Ebert, Zeke*, Fields*, Dunsmore*

*went to an NFL camp

Obviously too early to tell about which of the current group goes to the NFL, but other than Vitale and perhaps JJ, it is hard to imagine any of the current players enticing NFL scouts.

2000 Anderson, Simmons, Kustok, Souza, Clelland, Brockmeier

It wasn't a difficult question, nor difficult to answer. Do you know what "22 personnel" means?
Look, please read my answer again. Where did I say that we should use 2 TE with 2 RB? First off, i dont believe we have the personnel. 2 rbs are fine as long as they are versatile. Long and Jackson with one TE and 2 wr is a personnel package that puts our best 11 on the field. Long or Jackson can line up anywhere, ie, in the backfield or outside.

Do me a favor, instead of asking silly questions, how about you provide an alternative or critique or agree. k?

Once again, I have never dogged InsideNU because I don't read them. Every here and there I'll click an article like the one on Harris and actually think they do a great job from what I've seen. I don't talk **** about them because I don't read them and have literally no reason to talk **** about them. They're just there to me. I have no idea if they're good or not. Wildcat Report is quite literally the only NU fan site I read. Again, you're a liar. We've gone over this before. This is another instance of you flat out lying in an extremely feeble attempt to make someone look bad. Posting history is readily available, if you can show me one post where I have said one thing remotely bad about them, I will never post on this web site again.

Also, and I really, truly am trying to ignore the "not good enough to contribute to them" and "sidekick column" comments, but just for calling out your ignorance's sake, if you'd like me to compare/contrast my "column's" valuation and site traffic to InsideNU's, I'd be more than happy to.

You kept saying we needed ways to get Long, Dickerson, and Vitale on the field. The only way to do that without putting Jackson on the bench is to consistently play 22 personnel. That's what we call "logic."

Long and Jackson cannot play wideout. That's something you've made up.

The reason we are successful in the spread zone game is that Jackson has very good vision and feel for setting up/using blocks. I don't think there are really many issues with the run game, but trying to "go big" would bring another defender into the box and make it harder for Jackson to utilize his strengths. For that reason, I don't think it's a good idea to consistently play 12 or 22 personnel.

In my mind, the issues with offense this year (and really the past three years) start with a wide receiver corps that consistently underperformed. Instead of guys like Markshausen, Ebert, and Peterman who were smaller and more mobile to run the option routes critical to McCall's offense we have moved towards bigger, longer wideouts who look pretty but cannot consistently win running those routes. It's obviously on the OC to find ways to scheme an offense for the personnel he has, but the WR personnel/coaching sure haven't helped things. A lot of the same could be said for the OL, but they at least showed some life in the run game.

This is why I have a hard time making the case for Springer's job and only a slightly easier time for McCall and Cushing. Something has to change on offense, whether it's scheme, personnel, coaching, or (perhaps preferably) a combination thereof.

Thats been something that I agree with, ie, a lean towards bigger wr. Not sure if we just went with bigger wideouts or thats just how it shook out. In the meantime we at least shifted towards smaller wr by getting the kid who broke his verbal and went to mich, then getting nagel and now snatching Lees.

Yes, recruit better receivers. But wait, we're recruiting great receivers and failing to sign them, so how about recruiting harder? Failing that, keep pressuring the school to get rid of the ridiculous 'special' admissions standards for football and other sports. Either sink or swim with NU regular admissions standards or go with NCAA standards.

That's an interesting theory that nobody else has discussed. Do the staff see that as well?

And yeah, McHugh, C. Jones, Youngblood-Ary and C. Dickerson are 6-3, but was it their size or ability? Jehu Chesson is also 6-3, and somehow I think he would have been a star even if he had played for our poor passing offense.

Whether or not it was entirely intentional, we moved away from guys who could/should fit into our offense in favor of the "big, pretty" height/weight/speed guys. That was a mistake.

Say what? I have one handle. I did not "call for Springer to be fired." I do blame the recruiting for the simple fact that we targeted some guys and they wound up at Michigan and Stanford. We need to recruit harder and if those guys still won't come, we have to identify better alternatives.

Based on the recruitment of Lees, Nagel, Roberts, Perry (before he flipped to UM), and Vault (originally recruited as a slot WR) in addition to big/long guys like Fessler, Skowronek, and others... I think so?

Chesson is pretty clearly a better athlete (and was therefore higher on our list) than the guys we have.

Yeah, he is, but I just don't completely buy the idea that taller wideouts can't play in our offense. Two of the bigger guys, C. Jones and C. Dickerson, were just banged up. They had some great moments before that. We reached on McHugh and Youngblood-Ary. It's a little bit of a coincidence that our big guys did not work out but they were also injured or reaches in the first place.

It's much more about ability than it is body type. While there are a lot of big, fast guys out there who also have the dynamic athleticism to consistently run option routes, the problem is that every program in the country wants those guys. NU found some success going after slightly undersized guys who still had the ability to run routes and, more importantly, catch everything. For a couple of recruiting cycles, we gave up that route-running ability in favor of bigger, longer guys who couldn't run those kind of routes. Also doesn't help that they couldn't catch the ball consistently.

At the end of the day, McCall's ball control, option-based passing attack relies on smart slot receivers who run good routes and have sure hands to keep the chains moving. Guys like Markshausen, Ebert, etc. That's a guy we have sorely missed in the past couple years, even having to move CJones into the slot because he was the best route-runner we had.

So it naturally follows that you do the same thing over here, especially in the winter when there are less aluminan cans to collect.

Yep. All three times this year. Dude, you are the human version of a website's comments section.

A classic Turk response! Using horseshoe scoring, you got zero "ringers", two close "one-pointers", and several comments that are equivalent to throwing horseshoes into the woods. I'm surprised you left out several totally false statements you made earlier, but your ignorance and distortions are constantly morphing like a transformer.

Maybe someday I'll post some of the emails from you, and those forwarded to me from others involving you, that reveal the truth about TOS. Some are hilarious. I still chuckle over them and the idiots Scout had on their staff back then.

Regarding aluminum can collecting, remember I live in FLORIDA. It's warm in Florida, Turk. Also, lots of beer-drinking people go to Florida in the winter. There are also lots of beer-drinking alcoholics that live in Florida. Florida is a year round can collecting paradise! It was a funny comment, though.

I've embarrassed myself. I've angered myself. I've disappointed myself. But nothing will ever make me more disgusted with myself than not digging up 2015 Long's receptions total just to make Turk look like a complete and total fool like DkeCat just did. So, so ashamed of myself.
