If the conference realignment and 12-team playoff had gone into effect this year, there would be no controversy.
Not only would Florida State have gotten into the playoffs, they would also have a first round bye along with the Big Ten and SEC champions. Oklahoma State or Kansas State (or Utah or whoever won) would also receive a first round bye as Big 12 champions. Liberty and SMU would get automatic berths, as the 5th and 6th highest ranked conference champions.

that's what i mean by there will always be someone whining about the system regardless how it's configured, albeit the 4-team we have now is just awful as a product of the b10 and sec money grab.

if you have any pride EVERY game has something to play for. Sorry. Iâm just not a fan of a large playoff.
I do really like the number 12, especially compared to 16. Those first round "play-in" games will be good matchups in general...you won't have a 1 vs 16 thrashing.
Plus, the teams who win those first week games will be better prepared to play top teams their next game because they'll have a game under their belts with game-speed blocking, tackling, ball-security, and just general execution.

That's fine if you feel that way, but I don't find bowl games between teams that are missing the best players and sometimes doesn't even have a HC appealing.
All other non professional football has 16. The NFL has 14.
While not since the CFP started, in â73, â87, â92, and â04 there were 3 major teams with perfect records entering the respective bowl seasons. Sometimes the excluded team won, sometimes they didnât.
The 4 team format was a fail safe method to eliminate those possibilities along with the many years of multiple 1-loss teams and the question about who should have been #2 pre-bowl.

There are 10 FBS conferences (assuming the PAC?? survives) + independents. They should all put their champions into a playoff, doesn't matter if they suck or have injured QB, they earned their conference title they go. Bad conferences will get creamed, but get nice paychecks to help them improve. Don't care about parity. There should be no "Invitation" committees, just a round of champions, locked in. Neutral sites, no home teams in their own states. Pinstripe bowl is fine to me, you don't go to a playoff for good weather. Independents need to tie in to a conference. ND as well. No deals. No ties. Wildcards games are fine, whatever works. Make it even and fair, as sports should be. Shake hands when its over. Its still only a game.

Btw, â04 Utah was the 4th team that year and not yet generally thought of as âmajorâ. While I would have hoped they would have been the 4th participant in a theoretical 4 team CFP playoff if it had existed, not sure that that would have occurred (not top 4 of BCS or polls before the bowls).
