I realized that I probably didn’t dilute the MSMA on that application that I praised enough. It wiped out the POA Annua and the Buttonweed. But it clearly damaged the Bermuda and three weeks later it’s coming back. The backpack sprayer was half full so I just added water and some blue indicator. I went aggressive in a non conspicuous area. Is all of my Bermuda gonna die? I just got tired of the POA annua and Buttonweed. If the Bermuda looks really brown, do I just water it or is there anything I can do to punish the weeds and not the grass?

The hotter the temps the more damage msma and other herbicides do. I would think that the best thing you can do is water it a lot but a lot of water can give weeds a chance to fill in the bare spots.

Good lord that was a blazing hot rate. I put 16 Oz of MSMA (4oz per gallon) in my backpack sprayer. Your Bermuda will come back but it may take awhile. Put some fertilizer on it and water it.

Do you live in the arctic? How do you still have poa annua in this heat?
POA Annua ain’t 17’n around this year apparently. I live in the panhandle of Florida and it is just starting to flash a little yellow on the blades. Desoto what fertilizer do you recommend?

How many gallons per acre? I have about 5 acres and have a 25 gallon sprayer mounted on my mower.

5-6 Oz is fine if you’re spraying with a boom. If you’re spraying with backpack or hand sprayer that can be a little hot.

I use 12 oz per 15 gal
spray 3.5 acres with approx 30 gal--set sprayer at approx 20lbs
Seems to work finefor past 20 years

You have to be careful spraying when it is hot outside. If you are going to spray this time of year it is best to spray right before it gets dark.

From the Garden Counselor online: Generally, it is NOT wise to apply any garden chemical to your lawn when temperatures are above 90 degrees. Even 85 degrees is too hot and pushing it for some chemicals on certain plants. The effects of the chemical is amplified and your lawn grass may show more negative impact in the heat, while it might be fine in cooler temps.

The heat during the day kicks in a process known as Evapotranspiration, or ET. A simple way to understand that?
Water passes from the soil through the plant and is drawn out of openings in the surface of the leaves (blades of grass).
Water is also drawn out of the soil by the dry air being heated in the sun. The higher the temperature, the greater the ET.

I realize what you are talking about now, LOL. It wasn’t half full of concentration. Originally I had @ 6 oz per gallon. When I said I added water it was to the dilute. So now it’s close to 3 Oz per gallon.

Sprayed MSMA this morning. How long to see results? Used the 4 oz per gallon and sprayed with boomless sprayer.

I use a pretty heavy dose of msma here in central ms, but the hotter it gets, the less concentration is needed.

Sorry to revive an old subject (although it may be welcome relief).....Mentioned in another post I'm looking at ab ATV sprayer. Central MS resident and my yard used to be hay field, corn field, pea patch, etc through the years up until ten years ago...i know I have a goodly amount of Bermuda and centipede throughout, maybe some st Augustine......but infested with Bahia, white clover, and other things that I don't know their name. What's best path forward for this year? Hit it with MSMA now or wait until fall and start a fall / spring regiment ?

MSMA will kill your centipede. MSM (different from MSMA) is effective on bahia and safe for Bermuda and centipede. I am not sure whether MSM is safe this late in the summer. Hit that bahia in April or May with MSM and itll take care of it.

That one letter difference is one I better remember. Thanks!

Maybe find some humic acid to throw in the tank the next time you put out MSMA. I saw humic acid added to a tank mix of Roundup, Acephate (hot) and Dual Magnum (hot) on young cotton back in May....cotton had a little speckling to it but wasn't set back like the cotton that didn't have the humic acid. H.A. will meter the herbicide into the plant instead of slamming it in. It might work...just a thought.
