League toughness is a layer to the conversation. Kansas’ most played opponents since 1950 are K State (69%), Iowa State (71%), and Oklahoma (71%). UNC’s is Duke (54%), NC State (67%), and Wake Forest (68%). If we swapped the winning percentage on just these programs, Kansas would have 40 less wins and UNC would have 41 more. For those keeping track at home, that would mean 2364-2317 ADV Heels. And that’s just if you did it with the three most common opponents. We have played more games but we play in a tougher league. The Big 8/12 has always been among the best.
The point being that it’s complicated trying to factor in who played who, and how that changes an all-time list. It’s why the NCAA tournament results are given precedence, as that levels the playing field now in this era of expanded tournament. Titles, FFs, tourney wins, etc come first. All-time wins follow simply as an interesting counting stat that everyone can appreciate without context, but doesn’t add much to a conversation. The rest is just fan noise.
