All Time Scoring

I'm probably late to this party but ....Josh Hubbard is 300 points behind Malone for all time leading scorer at State. There are at least 4 more games this year plus potentially next season. He has averaged a little over 600 points per season. If he comes back, he could be the new all time scoring leader by a lot.

Note: He's definitely good but I think in 10 years, this stat will skew how he is remembered significantly towards better than actual.

Same song, different sport. Some of y’all did it to me when I was putting up historic numbers. Now you’re doing it to Hubbard before he even breaks the record. Anytime one of our guys gets close to greatness, we have to qualify it. Some of y’all just can’t let a Bulldog be great without a footnote- its exhausting. I guess haters are gonna hate though. Hubbard’s about to own the record book. I already do.
We both are legends- Deal with it.

Got to disagree here. Bailey Howell....not even a contest. Plus, don't forget Jim Ashmore and others that played under Babe McCarthy.

Likewise, imagine if I played in a whites only football league back in the day, going against a bunch of white defensive backs who looked like they just stepped off the set of Leave It to Beaver. Heck, I would have thrown for 500 yards a game, EVERY game, and been slinging touchdown passes as easy as I hand out tracts for Christ. Hubbard is the GOAT. Then imagine if Hubbard was my height. He’d be better than Michael Jordan or John Stockton for sure.

you might have an argument if Bailey didn't play in the NBA and was equally as great there as in the all white league. I guess Babe Ruth should be considered average by your thinking.

I know fake Will is just trolling, but it should also be pointed out that Bailey's points were scored in 3 much shorter seasons.

He's the clear MSU goat.

When Howell went to the NBA there were only 8 teams in it. It was trash not even comparable to today’s NBA. Back then half the best players were still in college or overseas. Sure he got to play against a few black players, but his NBA career started right after integration, as the NBA in the 60s was still figuring out how to integrate. Throughout his whole NBA career he saw a few great players, but the rest of the league was filled with role players who wouldn’t sniff an NBA roster today.

Not to mention- Imagine Howell trying to guard a modern black guard like Josh Hubbard- it’d be like a Mayberry sheriff chasing a Harlem Globetrotter lol. No chance.

Howell was a 6’7” white power forward with slow feet, no lateral quickness, no 3 point threat. So if Howell were to try to post Hubbard up, Hubbard fronts him- he’d have help behind him, then Hubbard strips the ball, and runs the break before Howell even turns around. Then any face up jumper Howell tried, Hubbard could easily be up in his hip pocket contesting. Hubbard easily owns thís matchup not even a contest. Hubbard would cook him like soul food on Sunday and serve him with hot sauce and collards. Howell’s era was whiter than Wonder Bread, he’d be nothing more than equal to that one white European kid on our team that Jan’s hates and randomly screams at all the time for no reason. Jan’s would hate and scream at Howell even more.

I think we've been through this. It is not him, but the people around him who are lacking. I wish he were on a different team... almost. At least one of our different teams.

I thought you were trolling, but you're actually serious about this argument. You're actually seriously debating the relative greatness of players who were in their prime nearly 70 years apart.

One thing I'm sure of, Bailey is in the big basketball HOF and Josh is pretty unlikely to play in the NBA at all.

The fake Will thing was really tired, but I think this is worse.

Context matters- Sure he’s in the NBA HOF- from playing in an NBA era that was like playing in a country club league that just started letting black people in the front door. If Hubbard entered that same little 8 team scrub league at the same time Howell’s did, Hubbard would have been the Micheal Jordan in that NBA league and would be in the hall of fame too. Howell wouldn’t sniff an NBA roster in today’s game, not to mention he’d be merely a role player on our college team thís year- probably coming off the bench.

Trying to compare these players across multiple periods of time in basketball is foolish.

There are so many factors which impact each player’s success, that the other never faced.

A take that may ruffle some feathers here - put 22yo Charles Rhodes and 22yo Bailey Howell on a court and Rhodes will be the better scorer, rebounder, defender, and athlete.
...And Rhodes isn't even viewed as a top 15 player in MSU history.

I agree with you on comparing players from different eras as to how they would be now.

But I suspect if Bailey Howell and Charles Rhodes are born in the same year, you'd see a much different Bailey Howell with modern strength training etc in his formative years.

Yeah, I could absolutely see Howell growing up in the modern era being a different player than he was 70 years ago- definitely a fair point.

At the same time, I have almost 0 belief that Howell would be a 6x AllStar and HOF player, if he entered the NBA in the '10s or '20s.
PJ Tucker type player, maybe.

I don’t care if was 1953 or 1963, 2003, 2023, or 1823- Charles Rhodes would dominate Bailey Howell.
