Guys that NU had a legit shot at. I think everyone knows about Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders. Off the top of my head, I can think of Travis Lewis and Haloti Ngata, probably Josh Freeman and Blaine Gabbert, even guys like Carlyle Holiday and Odell James could have made a difference at NU. I’m sure there are a lot more, have at it.

Faulk...
And of course...all the posters on this site...according to their bench press max, 40 yard times and old high school accomplishments.

Barry Sanders in a landslide. What he did in college was flat out insane. Unbelievable to think what he would have done in Nebraska's offense.
Crazy that OSU had him and Thurman Thomas around the same time. Anyone remember TT getting on the NU bus and talking **** to the Blackshirts? They held him to 19 yards rushing that day I think. Lol

Sayers . Remember watching Ngata at Oregon. Thurman Thomas ? Of less Importance Travis Henry flipped to the Vols. Of course we later had Green. I read Henry's bio. They can be proud of that one.

Ngata, Travis Lewis and Blaine Gabbert. All three were committed to us at one point. Gabbert would have done wonders on the '09 team.

Spencer Tillman..We lost out on him as we didn't offer what he wanted to major in, so he signed with his plan B which was OU. NU was his 1st choice and it wasn't even actually a close race as OU was a distant 2nd. He wanted to play for Osborne. Imagine having Rozier and Tillman on the same team as Tillman would've been the starter after Rozier graduated. That is all!

Simeon Rice
Dr. Tom said Rice and Sanders were his biggest recruiting blunders. Didn't take Rice because he did not want 2 lighter weight D lineman in same class account already had Neil Smith committed.
Imagine Rice, Smith and Broderick Thomas all on D Line at the same time.

The Sandman was a LB not a DLineman

Emmitt Smith had one of the original hat flipping shows which would indicate which school he was attending. He flipped the N hat twice and finally landed one with an F on it. Emmitt stayed home - we were lucky to be second

Haloti Ngata would have been a defining pickup for Solich....

We really could have used Danny Woodhead in the Callahan years... instant offense

Yes Woodhead! I remember people on this board was going crazy as to why we never offered. Many said he was too small and not a D-1 player while others knew he was destined for greatness.

You must be mixing things up. Rice is about 8 years younger than Smith and the Sandman. Not trying to bust your balls but just interested on who you really mean. Was thinking maybe Leslie O'neal but his a tad bit older than Neil Smith.

It was a long time ago, but they had another light d lineman and Tom didn't want 2 in same class.

They ran a 5-2 defense and he was a D End -- They called it a LB for Broderick to help with NFL draft and he liked the sound of LB better.
OLB is what Nebraska had him listed and was a Butkus and Lombardi award finalist in 1988. DE's aren't eligible for the Butkus Award

That is what I said they changed the name but he still played the same position as D End in same defense as Jimmy Williams, George Andrews, Derrie Nelson who were called D Ends. Broderick was the first one, they also changed the name for recruiting purposes.

I think that award goes to Gayle Sayers and no one else is even close.

I'd say Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith and Marshall Faulk were a close 1a, 1b and 1c from a pure talent standpoint, but Sayers was homegrown and would have been a bigger "get" and difference maker for the program at that time since we hadn't yet become a true powerhouse.

Adding insult to injury, Sayers later remarked that, had he known Devaney was coming to NU a year later, he would have stuck with his commitment to Nebraska.

The funny thing is, he had actually committed to Iowa State before NU. If message boards had existed at that time, I'm sure the prima donna label would have been liberally applied.
